Contender: What OCEARCH’s 4.2-Meter Male White Shark Record Actually Means

OCEARCH reported Contender at 13.8 feet and an estimated 1,653 pounds when tagged in January 2025. Its record claim is limited to male white sharks it has tagged, sampled, and released in the Western North Atlantic population.

Contender measured 13.8 feet (about 4.2 meters) and weighed an estimated 1,653 pounds when OCEARCH tagged him on January 17, 2025. OCEARCH describes him as the largest male white shark it has tagged, sampled, and released in the Western North Atlantic population. That is a regional record within OCEARCH’s research—not proof that he is the largest male white shark in the world or ever to exist.

Verified facts about Contender

Detail What OCEARCH reports
Name Contender
Species White shark, Carcharodon carcharias
Sex Male
Length 13.8 feet, approximately 4.2 meters
Weight Estimated 1,653 pounds
Tagging date January 17, 2025
Research distinction OCEARCH’s largest male white shark tagged, sampled, and released in the Western North Atlantic population

OCEARCH reported the length and estimated weight in its Contender update. The organization’s report does not identify which length convention produced the 13.8-foot figure, so it is best not to label it as a particular kind of length measurement. The weight should remain described as an estimate.

What does OCEARCH’s record claim mean?

The careful wording is that Contender is the largest male white shark OCEARCH has tagged, sampled, and released in the Western North Atlantic population, according to the organization. The claim is limited by both the region and the organization’s research records; it does not establish a world record or a maximum size for the species.

OCEARCH’s explanation of its white-shark research provides context for that bounded claim. A tagged-animal record is not a census of every shark in the region, and it should not be expanded into a claim about every male white shark ever seen or measured.

How are white sharks measured?

OCEARCH says its teams can take up to seven measurements, including girth, pre-caudal length, fork length, total length, stretch total length, and male inner and outer clasper lengths. The organization says different length measurements help estimate age and assign age classes. Its Contender update gives a length of 13.8 feet but does not say which convention was used.

That measurement nuance matters when comparing shark records. Two reported lengths may not be directly comparable if they were collected using different conventions or methods. The dossier does not establish a directly comparable record set for Contender, so claims beyond OCEARCH’s stated regional research distinction should be treated cautiously.

How does Contender’s tag work?

OCEARCH attached a SPOT (Smart Position and Temperature Transmitting) tag to Contender’s first dorsal fin. The tag transmits a locating signal when the fin is briefly at the surface; it does not continuously track every movement underwater. OCEARCH said the tag was expected to transmit location data for approximately five years.

  1. The shark’s dorsal fin reaches the surface.
  2. The tag has an opportunity to transmit a signal to satellites.
  3. That signal may provide a location, but it is not continuous observation of the shark.

OCEARCH describes its handling, measurement, and tagging methods in its “On the Lift” overview. A tag signal is useful research data, but it should not be treated as a live visual sighting or a guarantee of the shark’s precise current position.

Why tag and sample a large male white shark?

OCEARCH says tagging and sampling help researchers study white-shark movements, behavior, habitat use, reproduction, health, and conservation. Contender’s tag can contribute movement data, while biological samples can support research. These are the project’s stated research aims; they do not mean that every question about Contender has already been answered or published.

Dr. Harley Newton, OCEARCH Chief Scientist and Veterinarian, described the broader purpose this way: “Through the multidisciplinary research we facilitate, we are developing a more complete understanding of the Western North Atlantic white shark, including their essential habitats and threats to population recovery. This data contributes to global white shark conservation efforts and will help shape fisheries management policies that we hope will ensure a healthy future for sharks and the oceans they protect.” This is OCEARCH’s description of its research purpose, not an independent population estimate or a finding about Contender’s record.

How current is Contender’s tracker information?

OCEARCH’s October 30, 2025 update reported detections off Cape Breton Island from October 27–29, 2025, and identified October 29 as the last detection in that report. Those are historical detections, not confirmation of Contender’s location today. Check OCEARCH’s Contender tracker for available current telemetry, while remembering that signals are intermittent and do not amount to continuous underwater tracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Contender the biggest male white shark in the world?

The cited sources do not establish that. OCEARCH’s claim is that he is the largest male white shark it has tagged, sampled, and released in the Western North Atlantic population.

How large is Contender?

OCEARCH reported a length of 13.8 feet, approximately 4.2 meters, and an estimated weight of 1,653 pounds. Its update does not specify which length convention was used.

Does Contender’s tag show his exact location all the time?

No. OCEARCH says the SPOT tag transmits when the dorsal fin reaches the surface. It provides signals rather than continuous underwater tracking.

How long was Contender’s tag expected to transmit?

OCEARCH reported that the SPOT tag was expected to transmit location data for approximately five years. That is an expected duration, not confirmation that it will transmit continuously for that entire period.

Where was Contender last reported?

OCEARCH’s October 30, 2025 report described detections off Cape Breton Island between October 27 and 29, 2025, with October 29 the last detection in that report. That historical update does not establish his current location.

The bottom line

Contender was reported at 13.8 feet and an estimated 1,653 pounds when OCEARCH tagged him on January 17, 2025. The meaningful record is specific: OCEARCH calls him the largest male white shark it has tagged, sampled, and released in the Western North Atlantic population. It is not evidence that he is the largest male white shark in the world, and his tag provides intermittent surface signals rather than continuous tracking.
