Unexpected weight loss is a symptom, not a diagnosis: a dog may be taking in too few calories, using more energy, or losing, digesting, or absorbing nutrients abnormally. Causes range from feeding or chewing problems to parasites, digestive or metabolic disease, illness affecting major organs, infection, or cancer. If your dog is losing weight without explanation or the loss continues, contact a veterinarian rather than trying to diagnose or treat the cause at home.

Note how quickly the change is happening and whether your dog is eating less, normally, or more. Record changes in thirst, urination, stool, vomiting, activity, or chewing and swallowing. Sudden weakness, severe vomiting, diarrhea, or collapse warrants immediate veterinary care; otherwise, contact your veterinarian promptly about unexplained or continuing loss.

How urgent is unexplained weight loss?

Contact your veterinarian about weight loss that is unexplained or continuing, especially if you notice other changes. There is no universal safe waiting period for every dog. Faster loss is more concerning, and the decision about urgency depends on the dog’s history and accompanying signs.

VCA Animal Hospitals describes loss of more than 10% of normal body weight as clinically significant when it is not caused by fluid loss or dehydration. This is an alert threshold, not a reason to wait before seeking advice. (VCA Animal Hospitals: abnormal weight loss in dogs)

Sudden weakness, severe vomiting, diarrhea, or collapse requires immediate veterinary care. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine identifies these as possible signs of an Addisonian crisis; they are not the only reasons a dog may need urgent care. (Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine: Addison’s disease)

What may be causing the weight loss?

A dog loses weight when calorie intake does not meet its needs, energy use rises, or nutrients are lost, poorly digested, or poorly absorbed. The possible causes overlap, so appetite or another single sign cannot identify the cause. A veterinarian uses the history, examination, and tests to narrow it down.

Pattern or mechanism Possibilities to discuss with your veterinarian What to record
Not enough intake Reduced appetite, an inadequate amount of food, stress or environmental change, or difficulty grasping, chewing, or swallowing Food type and amount, treats, appetite, feeding changes, and trouble eating
Losses or digestive problems Prolonged vomiting or diarrhea, intestinal parasites, pancreatic insufficiency, or intestinal disease that affects digestion or absorption Stool changes, vomiting or regurgitation, appetite, and parasite testing or prevention history
Higher energy needs or altered metabolism Unusually high activity, fever, or metabolic disease Activity, appetite, thirst, urination, and other recent changes
Systemic illness Kidney, liver, heart, gastrointestinal, infectious, endocrine, neurologic, or cancer-related disease Changes in energy, appetite, thirst, urination, stool, vomiting, or swallowing

These are examples, not a ranking or diagnosis. VCA Animal Hospitals notes that appetite changes, environmental factors, digestive problems, parasites, and diseases affecting different body systems may all be relevant. (VCA Animal Hospitals: abnormal weight loss in dogs; VCA Animal Hospitals: testing for weight loss in dogs)

Why appetite is a useful clue

Tell the veterinarian whether your dog is eating less, about the same, or more than usual. Appetite helps guide the investigation but is not a test: weight loss can occur even when a dog still seems interested in food.

What to do before the appointment

  1. Write down when you noticed the change and whether it is progressing. Include previous and current weights if available.
  2. Record appetite, food brand and amount, treats, activity, water intake, urination, stool changes, vomiting or regurgitation, and any chewing or swallowing trouble.
  3. List medications and supplements, along with parasite prevention and testing history.
  4. Bring relevant food or supplement packaging and any records that may help explain the timeline.
  5. Contact your veterinarian. Do not use a home diet, supplement, dewormer, or calorie increase as a substitute for finding the cause.

What the veterinarian may do

History and physical examination

The veterinarian will ask about the weight change, appetite, diet and amount eaten, activity, thirst, urination, stool, vomiting or regurgitation, swallowing, medications, and relevant parasite or exposure history. A physical examination helps determine which follow-up tests are appropriate.

Common initial tests

Common first tests include a complete blood count (CBC), serum biochemistry, urinalysis, and parasite testing. These are screening steps, not a fixed package for every dog. Findings and the examination determine whether more tests are needed. (VCA Animal Hospitals: testing for weight loss in dogs)

Follow-up tests depend on the findings

Depending on the suspected cause, the veterinarian may recommend targeted endocrine or pancreatic tests, infectious-disease testing based on region and exposure, radiographs, ultrasound, or sampling and biopsy. Not every dog needs these tests. Treatment also depends on the specific diagnosis and may involve diet changes, medication, or other condition-specific care.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my dog losing weight but still eating?

Eating does not show whether a dog is digesting and absorbing nutrients normally or using more energy than it takes in. Parasites, pancreatic insufficiency, intestinal disease, metabolic or other systemic illness, and an inaccurate estimate of food intake are among the possibilities. Contact a veterinarian about unexplained or continuing loss.

When should I worry about my dog’s weight loss?

Contact your veterinarian promptly about unexplained or continuing loss; faster loss is more concerning. Sudden weakness, severe vomiting, diarrhea, or collapse warrants immediate veterinary care. The 10% threshold VCA cites is not a reason to wait before asking for help.

What tests might a veterinarian recommend?

Evaluation usually begins with a history and physical examination. Common initial tests include a CBC, serum biochemistry, urinalysis, and parasite testing. Additional tests depend on the findings and may include targeted disease tests, imaging, or sampling and biopsy.

Should I feed more or change my dog’s food?

Do not treat unexplained weight loss by automatically increasing food or repeatedly changing diets. Contact your veterinarian; treatment and any diet changes depend on the cause.
