What Fruits Can Cats Eat? Safe Choices, Portions, and Toxic Fruits

Fruit is optional for cats, and general pet guidance naming strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and apples does not establish cat-specific portions. Keep grapes and raisins away from cats and contact a veterinarian promptly after a suspected ingestion.

Fruit is optional for cats, not a meaningful part of their diet. General pet guidance describes strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and apples as fruits pets may eat in moderation, but it does not establish cat-specific serving sizes or a complete list of approved fruits.

Keep grapes and raisins away from cats, and contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat eats them. The evidence for grape and raisin toxicity in cats is uncertain, so do not assume an exposure is safe; do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you to.

Fruit examples and safety at a glance

Fruit or exposure What the reviewed sources say Practical guidance
Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and apples General pet guidance describes these as safe in moderation. It is not a cat-specific feeding protocol. They are optional treats, not required foods. The reviewed sources do not specify a safe cat serving size.
Grapes and raisins Cornell lists them among foods that can be toxic to cats. Pet Poison Helpline says feline evidence is uncertain: anecdotal kidney cases have been reported, but no official feline toxic dose is established. Do not feed them. Contact a veterinarian promptly after any suspected ingestion.
Avocado Cornell lists avocado among foods that can be toxic to cats. Avoid offering it to your cat.
Citrus fruit flesh ASPCA says small amounts of citrus fruit are unlikely to cause more than minor stomach upset. Do not treat a small taste of flesh as equivalent to eating peel or plant material. Contact a veterinarian if your cat eats a larger amount or develops symptoms.
Citrus peel and plant material ASPCA notes that peels and plant parts can cause problems. Its grapefruit entry identifies essential oils and psoralens as toxic principles. Keep peels and citrus plant material away from cats.

These examples do not amount to a complete cat-feeding guide. Cats should receive an appropriate diet, and fruit should not replace their regular food. For general feeding context, see the Cornell Feline Health Center’s guidance on feeding your cat.

Can cats eat strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or apples?

General pet guidance names strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and apples as examples that may be eaten in moderation. That guidance is not a cat-specific portion plan, and the research reviewed for this article did not establish how much of any fruit is safe for a cat or how often to offer it. Treat these as optional examples, not as foods cats need.

Are grapes and raisins toxic to cats?

Cornell includes grapes and raisins among foods that can be toxic to cats. The feline evidence is less settled than the evidence for dogs: Pet Poison Helpline says dogs are the only species positively identified as sensitive, while anecdotal kidney-injury cases have been reported in cats. It also says an official toxic dose for cats has not been established. Dog-specific findings should not be presented as proof of feline outcomes.

Because the risk cannot be reliably assessed from a known feline dose, keep grapes and raisins away from cats and seek veterinary advice after a suspected ingestion. For the evidence and uncertainty, see VCA’s discussion of household hazards for cats and Pet Poison Helpline’s guidance on currants.

How should I think about citrus?

Citrus flesh, peel, and plant material are not identical exposures. ASPCA says a small amount of citrus fruit is unlikely to cause more than minor stomach upset, while peels and plant parts can cause problems. Its grapefruit guidance identifies essential oils and psoralens as toxic principles. Avoid giving citrus to your cat, and keep peels and plant material out of reach. If your cat eats a larger amount or shows signs of illness, contact a veterinarian. See the ASPCA’s guidance on people foods to avoid feeding pets.

What to do if your cat ate grapes or raisins

  1. Remove any remaining grapes, raisins, or food containing them so your cat cannot eat more.
  2. Note what your cat may have eaten and when. Keep the package or ingredient list if one is available.
  3. Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic promptly and follow their instructions.
  4. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically tells you to.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s cat-hazard guidance says: “DO NOT induce vomiting unless you are specifically directed to do so.” You can also contact Pet Poison Helpline for emergency guidance. If your cat is showing concerning symptoms, tell the veterinary professional what was eaten and what signs you have observed.
