North American box turtles are terrestrial omnivores that need room to move, secure cover, a safe heat gradient, indoor UVB or appropriate outdoor sunlight, clean shallow water, and varied food. Care differs by species, climate, and setup, so confirm an individual plan with a reptile-experienced veterinarian. Before acquiring one, check local wildlife rules and be ready for a commitment that can last decades.

This guide covers North American box turtles in the genus Terrapene. A wild turtle is not a free pet: laws vary by location, and removing or releasing turtles can harm animals and wild populations.

How do I care for a North American box turtle?

Start by identifying the turtle and checking the rules where you live. Then prepare a secure indoor or outdoor habitat that lets it move between warmer and cooler areas, hide, and access safe substrate and fresh, shallow water. Provide a varied omnivorous diet, monitor the environment, wash your hands after contact, and seek care from a veterinarian experienced with reptiles.

What does a box turtle need in its enclosure?

  • Space: An escape-resistant terrestrial enclosure with room to move, explore, hide, and use different temperature zones.
  • Heat gradient: A warmer area and a cooler retreat. Measure both rather than relying on a lamp’s wattage or label.
  • UVB indoors: Use reptile-specific UVB lighting installed according to the manufacturer’s directions. Glass and plastic filter UV; light through a window is not an equivalent substitute.
  • Cover and substrate: Provide multiple hides and suitable substrate that supports the turtle’s needs while remaining safe and manageable to clean.
  • Water: Keep clean, shallow water available in a dish the turtle can enter and leave safely. Clean it daily because turtles may defecate in it.
  • Outdoor protection: Provide shade and shelter, and secure the enclosure against digging out, climbing out, and predators.

Care sources give different enclosure dimensions and environmental ranges, so do not treat one measurement as a universal minimum. For example, Tree of Life Exotic Pet Medical Center lists a 4-by-2-foot indoor tortoise table, while VCA says larger indoor space is beneficial and that enclosure choice depends on the animal and conditions. Ask a reptile-experienced veterinarian to help tailor the setup to the turtle and your climate. See VCA’s housing guidance.

Indoor or outdoor housing?

Consideration Indoor housing Outdoor housing
Climate and control Allows close monitoring and control of heat, humidity, and daily conditions. Appropriate only when local climate and the turtle’s needs permit it; weather and temperature vary.
Light Requires correctly installed reptile-specific UVB lighting. Can provide natural sunlight, but the turtle still needs access to shade.
Security Must prevent escape and keep lamps and equipment safely installed. Must prevent escape and protect against predators; an unsecured yard is not suitable.
Space and activity Provide room to move, hide, and use different environmental zones. Can offer space for natural behaviors, but needs secure shelter and suitable ground.
Daily care Requires monitoring, cleaning, and maintenance of lighting and heat equipment. Requires checks for damage, digging, predators, shade, and weather exposure.

Outdoor housing is not suitable in every climate or for every species. VCA recommends secure containment, shade, and buried perimeter barriers because turtles dig. Other veterinary guidance notes that box turtles can climb as well as dig, so consider an inward-facing barrier and a cover where predators are present. Maintain a complete indoor option if weather or other conditions make outdoor housing unsuitable.

Temperature, UVB, and humidity

Box turtles are ectotherms: their body temperature is regulated by environmental temperature. Offer a gradient so the turtle can move between warmer and cooler areas, and monitor both ends with appropriate instruments. Published veterinary recommendations differ: Tree of Life lists a warm end of 85–90°F and a cool end no cooler than 70°F, while VCA gives a basking zone of about 90–100°F and a cool end of about 70–75°F. Treat these as examples from specific sources, not a settled target for every box turtle. Confirm the right conditions for the species and setup with a reptile-experienced veterinarian.

Indoor turtles need a reptile-specific UVB source installed according to its manufacturer’s directions. UVB supports vitamin D3 formation and calcium absorption; inadequate exposure can contribute to metabolic bone disease. Glass and plastic filter UV, and UVB lamp output decreases with age. Follow the product maker’s placement and replacement schedule. Outdoor turtles need access to shade so they can leave direct sunlight. For more background, see VCA’s box turtle housing guidance.

Humidity needs vary among species and setups. Exotic Pet Vets gives 60–80% for most temperate species and 40–60% for desert box turtles; treat these as that source’s guide ranges, not universal targets for all Terrapene. Monitor conditions with a hygrometer and ask a veterinarian about the appropriate range and substrate for your turtle.

Substrate, hides, and water

Choose substrate that is safe, cleanable, and suitable for the turtle’s moisture needs. Tree of Life lists cypress mulch or chipped coconut husk. VCA recommends non-toxic, cleanable flooring and warns against sand, gravel, wood shavings, corn cob, walnut shells, and cat litter because of ingestion or impaction risks. VCA also notes that wet plant-based bedding can mold. No single substrate suits every species, enclosure, and health situation; confirm your choice with a reptile veterinarian.

Provide multiple secure hides and fresh water at all times. The water dish should be shallow and easy to enter and leave. Clean it daily, or sooner if it is fouled. A humid hide may help indoor turtles, but its use and the overall humidity should be suited to the animal and enclosure.

Feeding a box turtle

Box turtles are omnivores. Their natural foods include fruits, berries, seeds, mushrooms, plants, and small prey such as insects, worms, eggs, and other invertebrates. Offer variety rather than relying on a single food or a universal plant-to-animal ratio. Age and individual needs can affect diet; consult a reptile-experienced veterinarian about food choices, portions, and feeding frequency.

Tree of Life and Exotic Pet Vets provide lists of suitable plant and animal foods, but their recommendations differ on supplementation. Diet, age, UVB exposure, and health all matter. Ask a veterinarian to recommend calcium or multivitamin products and a schedule for your turtle instead of applying a one-size-fits-all regimen.

Health, hygiene, and veterinary care

Arrange care with a veterinarian who treats reptiles or chelonians. Veterinary guidance can help you choose housing and lighting, plan preventive care, and respond to problems. Exotic Pet Vets recommends wellness and fecal checks and advises prompt veterinary attention for concerning changes.

Seek veterinary advice for lethargy, loss of appetite or failure to grow, nasal discharge, breathing difficulty, swollen or discharging eyes, a soft shell, difficulty moving, or an injury. These signs do not establish a diagnosis; a veterinarian should assess the turtle.

Turtles can carry Salmonella. Wash your hands after touching the turtle or cleaning its habitat, water, or equipment. Indiana DNR notes that children, pregnant people, and people with compromised immune systems should avoid reptile contact according to CDC recommendations. See Indiana DNR’s turtle guidance.

How long do box turtles live?

Plan for a commitment that can span decades. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that wild box turtles have been reported to live more than 50 years and captive turtles typically live 40 years. Indiana DNR cautions that some pet turtle species live 50 years or more; that figure should not be attributed specifically to all box turtles. These are care-planning figures, not a guarantee for an individual animal. Sources: Florida FWC’s box turtle profile and Indiana DNR’s Eastern box turtle guidance.

Before acquiring a box turtle

  1. Identify the turtle. Species and origin affect care and may affect applicable rules.
  2. Check current local law. Ask your state or local wildlife agency about possession, collection, sale, transport, and permits. Rules differ by jurisdiction; examples from one state are not a complete legal survey.
  3. Do not collect a wild turtle casually. Wild turtles have conservation value and may have strong homing instincts. North Carolina Wildlife discourages taking wild Eastern box turtles home, and Florida FWC advises against relocating them.
  4. Prepare the habitat first. Confirm that the enclosure is secure, has a gradient and appropriate shelter, and provides accessible clean water.
  5. Find a reptile-experienced veterinarian. Arrange advice about husbandry, preventive care, and the turtle’s individual needs.

If you find a turtle crossing a road, Florida FWC says that, if it is safe to help, you may move it across in the direction it was already heading. Do not relocate it elsewhere. For an injured turtle, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or your wildlife agency. Never release a captive turtle into the wild; its origin and health may be unknown, and release can harm the turtle or wild populations.

FAQ

Can a box turtle live outdoors?

Outdoor housing can work when the climate and species are suitable and the enclosure has shade, shelter, and protection from predators and escape. It is not appropriate to leave a turtle loose in an unsecured yard. Ask a reptile-experienced veterinarian about local conditions and the individual turtle.

Does a box turtle need UVB?

Indoor turtles need an appropriately installed reptile-specific UVB source. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for placement and replacement. Window glass and clear plastic filter UV, so sunlight through a window is not an equivalent substitute.

What should I feed a box turtle?

Box turtles are omnivores, and their natural diet includes a range of plant foods and small prey. Offer variety, and ask a reptile-experienced veterinarian to tailor food and supplements to the turtle’s age, health, and UVB exposure.

How often should I clean a box turtle’s water dish?

Keep fresh water available and clean the dish daily. Turtles may defecate in the water, so replace it sooner if it becomes dirty.

How long can a box turtle live?

Plan for decades of care. Florida FWC reports captive box turtles typically live 40 years, and wild turtles have been reported above 50 years. Individual lifespans vary.
