According to the 2026 U.S. Geological Survey synthesis How wildlife respond to tropical cyclones, different species use different tactics: some move to refuge, some remain in place, and others travel longer distances to avoid the storm’s main impacts. What an animal does depends on its species and ecosystem.
Surviving the storm is only part of the story. Wind, heavy rain, and storm surge can cause direct harm or displacement. Afterward, habitat changes can remove food, nests, and roosting places, and can alter predation risk and interactions with people. A USGS review of birds also describes vegetation damage and the resulting loss of food and nesting or roosting sites as important effects after hurricanes.
How do animals survive hurricanes?
Some animals may find refuge or move away from the storm’s main impacts, while others remain where they are. These are documented strategies, not guarantees: hurricane effects vary, and animals can still be injured, displaced, or killed. People should give wildlife space rather than assume it needs to be rescued.

The aftermath can matter as much as the storm itself. Damaged vegetation may mean less food and fewer places to nest or roost. Floodwater can also contain hazards and bring wildlife into unfamiliar places. If you find an injured or displaced wild animal, contact local wildlife authorities or a licensed rehabilitator for advice rather than trying to handle it yourself.
How can I protect my pets during a hurricane?
Make decisions using local official instructions and the hazards where you live. NOAA’s hurricane safety guidance advises people to know their evacuation zone, plan routes, and choose a destination away from hurricane hazards, including inland flooding. Include pets in that plan and check local evacuation and shelter information, since routes, rules, and availability can change.

FDA guidance says to bring pets when evacuating. Do not assume an emergency shelter accepts ordinary pets: check with local emergency management, and identify alternatives such as pet-friendly lodging or a friend or relative. Prepare more than one destination in case your first option is unavailable.
What should be in a pet emergency kit?
Prepare a carrier or crate for each pet, along with the supplies and records that animal needs. The National Weather Service’s hurricane workshop recommends a carrier large enough for the animal to stand up and turn around. FDA recommends having a pet emergency kit ready; a general kit does not replace an animal’s specific medical or dietary needs.

- Confirm at least one evacuation destination accepts your pets, and identify a backup.
- Check official instructions and route conditions before leaving. Do not enter floodwater or go outside during a brief lull in the storm.
Keep pets in carriers or crates during the storm when advised, and follow public-safety instructions. The National Weather Service warns that floodwater may contain harmful bacteria, chemicals, wildlife, and dangerous objects, so keep pets away from it.
After evacuation: supervise pets and let them settle
Keep pets closely supervised in unfamiliar surroundings. FDA advises confining cats to a small indoor area while they acclimate and giving pets time to rest. Contact a veterinarian if anxiety or health problems persist. For floodwater exposure or other concerns, seek veterinary advice.
