Great Pyrenees are giant livestock-guardian dogs: males are 27–32 inches tall and 100 pounds or more, while females are 25–29 inches and 85 pounds or more, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). They can be calm and devoted with family, but their independent, protective nature, vocal alerting, and heavy shedding are important parts of daily life. They suit people prepared for a large guardian dog, regular coat care, early positive training, and close supervision around young children.

What is a Great Pyrenees?
The Great Pyrenees is a large, thick-coated working dog developed to guard livestock in mountainous conditions and deter predators. Its guardian history helps explain why the breed can be calm with family yet alert and ready to respond to perceived threats.
A livestock guardian protects animals and makes decisions independently; that differs from a herding dog, which moves livestock in response to a handler. The breed’s independence is a working trait, not a sign that it cannot learn. It can, however, make repetitive obedience work less engaging.

Great Pyrenees temperament
Great Pyrenees are generally calm and devoted with family, but their guardian background can make them alert, protective, independent, and wary of unfamiliar people. Individual temperament varies. Early socialization helps a dog become more comfortable with people, animals, handling, and everyday environments, but owners should not expect it to erase inherited guardian tendencies.
The breed’s size and strength make thoughtful management important. AKC advises supervision around young children. Teach children to give the dog space, and provide the dog with a quiet place to retreat. Do not leave young children and a dog together unsupervised.

Do Great Pyrenees bark a lot?
Yes. Great Pyrenees are very vocal, according to the AKC breed profile. Alert barking fits their history as livestock guardians, which had to notice and respond to possible threats. Individual dogs and circumstances differ, but the available breed sources do not support promising that training will remove the tendency.
Consider whether your home and neighbors can accommodate a vocal dog before choosing the breed. Early training and thoughtful management can help a dog learn household routines, but barking should be treated as a real ownership consideration.
Training and socialization
Begin socialization and training early. Use patience, consistency, short varied sessions, and positive reinforcement. Independent dogs may lose interest in repetitive exercises, so keep training engaging and reinforce the behaviors you want in everyday situations.
Because an adult Great Pyrenees is large and strong, owners may benefit from a professional trainer who has experience with large guardian breeds. Ask a trainer or veterinarian for individualized guidance when behavior is difficult to manage.

Care, grooming, and exercise
The double coat sheds and needs regular care. The AKC recommends a thorough brush at least once a week with a pin brush or slicker brush; seasonal shedding may call for more frequent brushing. Brush down through the coat rather than only smoothing the top. Regular nail trimming and frequent tooth brushing with toothpaste made for dogs are also part of AKC care advice.
Great Pyrenees are not highly active compared with more energetic breeds, but they still need appropriate daily movement. AKC suggests moderate exercise such as walks and notes activities including obedience trials and cart pulling. Tailor activity to the dog’s age and condition, and consult a veterinarian about an individual exercise plan.
Health problems in Great Pyrenees
The AKC lists hip and elbow dysplasia, eye disorders, luxating patellas, neurological and immune-mediated disorders, some cancers, and bloat among health concerns for the breed. These are risks to discuss, not a prediction that an individual dog will develop any of them.
Bloat, or gastric dilatation-volvulus, can be life-threatening. Ask your veterinarian about warning signs, emergency care, and practical risk management for your dog. AKC notes that experts consider multiple small meals and avoiding vigorous exercise around mealtimes potentially helpful, while the causes of bloat are not fully understood. Follow veterinary advice rather than treating general breed guidance as a prescription.

Choosing a breeder
The Great Pyrenees Club of America (GPCA) recommends that breeding dogs qualify for a CHIC number and make health-testing results public through the OFA CHIC database. Its health statement is from 2022, so check current club guidance and the actual public records for the dogs you are considering. A breeder’s verbal assurance alone is not a substitute for reviewing records.
Ask what screening was done, request the parents’ registered names and public health records, and discuss health concerns in the family lines. The GPCA health statement is available through the AKC; the OFA CHIC program explains the program and public results.
Is a Great Pyrenees a good fit for you?
A Great Pyrenees may suit a household seeking a calm, devoted guardian and prepared for a large, independent dog. It may be challenging where loud alerting, strength, shedding, or training demands conflict with the household’s needs. Consider your tolerance for barking, ability to supervise around children, and willingness to commit to early socialization and regular grooming.
Before choosing one, compare your household’s needs with the dog’s size and strength, guardian instincts, barking, grooming workload, exercise needs, and health-screening practices. For a first-time owner, the breed’s independence and physical power make realistic preparation and support especially important.
