This guide compares 11 useful breeds and types, but it is not a popularity ranking: individual animals and stock quality matter as much as breed.
Before choosing, consider the goat’s intended output, size and production traits, recurring care or harvest work, and whether suitable animals and buyers are available locally. Goats are social animals and do better with companions.
Quick comparison of 11 goat breeds and types
| Breed or type | Best-known fit | Useful distinction | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alpine | Milk | Associated with high milk production | Individual output varies; breed alone cannot guarantee yield. |
| Saanen | Milk | A dairy breed associated with higher milk yield | Production differs among individual animals. |
| LaMancha | Milk | Dairy breed known for very small ear flaps | Evaluate the individual, not just its breed label. |
| Nubian | Milk and some meat utility | Known for higher-butterfat milk and heat tolerance | More concentrated milk can mean lower volume. |
| Nigerian Dwarf | Small-scale milk | A miniature dairy goat | Choose for your actual milk needs; output varies. |
| Boer | Meat | Associated with growth and muscling | Good nutrition matters; assess health and the individual animal. |
| Kiko | Meat | Selected under rugged conditions and described as hardy | “Low-input” is comparative, not a promise of no care. |
| Spanish | Meat | Known for survivability and maternal ability | Availability and individual quality vary. |
| Angora | Mohair | Fiber goat whose fleece is shorn | Plan for recurring shearing and fiber handling. |
| Cashmere goat | Cashmere | Cashmere can be harvested by combing | Do not assume every goat produces equivalent fiber. |
| Pygmy | Companion or meat | Small-framed goat used for pets or meat | Temperament is individual; goats need companions. |
These are representative examples, not an exhaustive list. Other dairy breeds include Oberhasli and Toggenburg; Myotonic and Savanna are among other meat-goat options discussed by extension sources.
Best goat breeds for milk
Alpine and Saanen are associated with higher milk yield, while Nubian is known for higher-butterfat, more concentrated milk and heat tolerance. LaMancha is a dairy breed, and Nigerian Dwarf offers a miniature dairy option. Breed tendencies are not guarantees: the individual goat, its management, and the conditions where it is raised affect production.

Cornell Cooperative Extension reports historical 1998 average 305-day yields and fat percentages for several dairy breeds. These figures are historical rather than current herd averages, and Cornell notes wide variation among individual animals.
| Breed | Average 305-day yield reported for 1998 | Fat |
|---|---|---|
| French Alpine | 1,979 lb (900 kg) | 3.5% |
| LaMancha | 1,771 lb (850 kg) | 3.9% |
| Anglo-Nubian | 1,618 lb (735 kg) | 4.6% |
| Oberhasli | 1,663 lb (756 kg) | 3.7% |
| Saanen | 1,979 lb (908 kg) | 3.5% |
| Toggenburg | 1,710 lb (777 kg) | 3.3% |

Best goat breeds for meat
Boer goats are associated with growth and muscling. Kikos are described as hardy and selected under rugged conditions, while Spanish goats are noted for survivability and mothering ability. Which is the better fit depends on your terrain, feed, management, market, and the quality of the animals available.
Rank #2
Kentucky State University Cooperative Extension discusses breed use, availability, and market context. Cornell Cooperative Extension cautions: “Remember, when selecting good meat goats, it is more important to evaluate the actual animal rather than to choose an animal sight unseen based on its breed.”
Best goat breeds for fiber
Angora goats produce mohair and require shearing. The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) says Angoras are shorn twice a year, so plan for recurring harvest labor as well as fiber handling and an outlet for the fleece.
Cashmere is a different fiber goal: NCAT says cashmere can be harvested by combing. Do not confuse cashmere with Angora mohair or assume every goat produces the same quantity or quality of fiber.
Rank #3
Best goats for pets
Pygmy goats are small-framed and are used for companionship or meat. Nigerian Dwarfs are miniature dairy goats, so they may suit someone seeking a small-scale milk animal as well as a companion. Neither a small size nor a breed name guarantees a particular temperament or fit for a household.
Goats are social and do better with companions, according to NCAT. Plan for suitable fencing, dry shelter, feed, water, and enough space to manage the animals safely. Colorado State University Extension also identifies feed, water, and adequate summer ventilation as basic shelter considerations.
How to choose the right goat
- Choose your main purpose. Decide whether your priority is milk, meat, mohair, cashmere, or companionship. Some goats can serve more than one purpose, but a dual-purpose animal may not maximize every trait.
- Compare the relevant traits. For dairy, weigh milk volume against composition. For meat, consider size, growth, and muscling alongside hardiness or mothering ability. For fiber, account for harvesting work as well as the product.
- Match the goat to your conditions. Consider local climate and terrain, available feed and water, facilities, veterinary support, and how much care you can provide.
- Check local availability and market. Confirm that suitable stock is available and that you have a realistic outlet for milk, meat, or fiber if you plan to sell or process a product.
- Evaluate the individual animal. Ask about its history and assess its health and condition. Do not select a meat goat sight unseen based on breed alone, as Cornell Cooperative Extension advises.
- Plan for companionship and care. Goats do better with companions. Provide secure fencing and dry shelter, with access to feed and water and adequate ventilation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which goat breed is best for milk?
Alpine and Saanen are associated with higher milk yield; Nubian is known for higher-butterfat milk, and Nigerian Dwarf is a miniature dairy option. Actual production varies among animals, so compare individual stock and your needs rather than relying on breed alone.
Rank #4
Are Pygmy goats good pets?
Pygmy goats are used as pets as well as for meat, but a breed label cannot guarantee temperament or suitability for your home. Goats are social and do better with companions, and they need secure fencing, shelter, feed, and water.
What is the difference between Angora and Cashmere goats?
Angora goats produce mohair, which is harvested by shearing; NCAT says they are shorn twice a year. Cashmere is a different fiber, which NCAT says can be harvested by combing.
Which goat breeds are used for meat?
Boer goats are associated with growth and muscling, Kikos with hardiness under rugged conditions, and Spanish goats with survivability and mothering ability. The best choice depends on your management, local conditions, market, and the quality of the individual animals.

Best Value
Can I choose a meat goat based on breed alone?
No. Cornell Cooperative Extension advises evaluating the actual animal rather than buying sight unseen based on breed. Stock quality, health, local conditions, and your intended market all matter.
Are breed averages a guarantee of milk production?
No. Cornell Cooperative Extension’s reported 305-day yields are historical 1998 averages, and the source notes wide variation among individual animals. Treat them as context, not a promise about a particular goat.
