Rehoming a dog can be a responsible choice when changed circumstances mean you can no longer provide appropriate care. First consider whether relevant support—such as affordable veterinary care, pet supplies, housing help, behavior support, or temporary fostering—could safely help you keep the dog. If rehoming is needed, seek a suitable match, share the dog’s history candidly, and involve professionals for medical or serious behavior concerns.

There is no single best route for every dog. Compare direct placement with a shelter or rescue based on the dog’s safety and needs, the prospective home’s fit, timing and temporary-care options, and the receiving organization’s capacity and process.

1. Identify what is not working

Write down the problem and whether it is temporary or likely to continue. Financial strain, illness, veterinary costs, housing restrictions, behavior concerns, and changes in family circumstances can all make pet care difficult. Rehoming is not inherently irresponsible, and considering support first does not mean you must keep a dog in an unsafe or unmanageable situation.

Depending on what is happening, ask local organizations about affordable veterinary care, pet supplies or food assistance, pet-friendly housing referrals, behavior support, and temporary fostering. The ASPCA and Best Friends Animal Society describe support options that may help some families keep their pets; availability varies by location.

2. Get professional help for health or behavior concerns

If the dog’s behavior has changed or aggression is a concern, arrange a veterinary evaluation to check for medical contributors. Then consult a qualified behavior professional as appropriate. The ASPCA notes that aggression may sometimes be reduced or eliminated, but a complete cure is not guaranteed and ongoing management may be needed.

Do not treat a single account or behavior test as a guarantee of how a dog will behave in a new home. Share the known history and consult professionals about the dog’s needs and any safety concerns before deciding whether direct placement is appropriate.

3. Prepare an honest history

Give potential caregivers or organizations useful information about the dog’s daily life and needs. Include, as far as you know:

  • Daily routine, care needs, and behavior at home.
  • Health history, veterinary care, and current medication.
  • How the dog behaves around adults, children, visitors, and other animals.
  • Known fears, triggers, behavior concerns, or management needs.
  • Any known bite, fight, escape, or other safety incident.

Describe what you have observed rather than making broad promises. Be clear about what is known, what has only been observed in limited situations, and what is unknown. A candid account helps a prospective caregiver assess whether they can meet this dog’s needs.

4. Compare placement routes

Route What to consider
Trusted contacts or direct placement Can the prospective home meet the dog’s needs, and will it receive a full history? A familiar person is not automatically the right match.
Direct rehoming platform Best Friends names Rehome by Adopt a Pet and Home To Home as resources. Check current terms and availability, and remember that a platform does not replace careful matching or professional advice when needed.
Local shelter or rescue Ask about intake procedures, timing, required records, available support, and whether the organization can accommodate the dog’s needs. Consider its capacity and placement options.
Temporary foster If available, temporary care may give you time to address a short-term crisis or find a suitable permanent home. Confirm the arrangement and responsibilities with the people or organization involved.

For serious behavior or safety concerns, do not assume an informal private placement is suitable. Consult a veterinarian, qualified behavior professional, or reputable organization about a safe plan. If direct placement is not appropriate, a reputable shelter or rescue is a valid option.

5. Find a suitable match

Best Friends recommends creating a detailed profile that communicates the dog’s personality, quirks, and the kind of home that would fit. Use accurate descriptions and recent information. Explain the dog’s daily needs, known behavior, medical needs, and any relevant limits on compatibility with people or other animals.

Talk with prospective caregivers about their household, experience, routine, and ability to meet the dog’s needs. Give them time to consider the information, and do not rush a decision simply because someone is available immediately. Check current local rules for ownership transfer and any known dangerous behavior, and confirm the current requirements of any platform or organization you use.

6. Complete a careful handoff

  1. Share the dog’s known health, behavior, and daily-care history with the new caregiver or receiving organization.
  2. Provide available veterinary records and explain current care or medication needs.
  3. Discuss any known safety concerns and the management they require.
  4. Confirm the transfer details in writing and check any applicable local requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is rehoming a dog the wrong thing to do?

No. Rehoming can be responsible when circumstances mean you can no longer provide appropriate care. Consider relevant support first when it is safe and practical, then seek a suitable match or reputable organization.

Should I try to keep my dog before rehoming?

Consider whether support related to the problem—such as veterinary assistance, pet supplies, housing help, behavior support, or temporary fostering—could make it possible to keep the dog safely. These options are not a requirement to remain in an unsafe or unmanageable situation.

Should I use a direct rehoming platform or a shelter?

Neither route is best in every case. Compare the dog’s needs and safety, the prospective home’s fit, timing and temporary-care options, and the receiving organization’s capacity and process. Ask local providers about their current services and intake requirements.

What should I tell a potential caregiver?

Share what you know about the dog’s routine, health, medication, behavior, triggers, interactions with people and other animals, and any bite or escape history. Be candid about uncertainties and avoid guarantees about how the dog will behave in a new home.

What if my dog has aggression or serious behavior concerns?

Start with a veterinary evaluation, then consult a qualified behavior professional. Share the history honestly and get guidance on whether direct placement is appropriate. Aggression may sometimes improve, but a complete cure is not guaranteed and ongoing management may be necessary.
