Rainbowfish Sizes and Tank Fit: How to Choose the Right Species

Rainbowfish differ in adult size and activity, so tank choice should depend on the identified species and the shoal you plan to keep. Compare broad care-guide recommendations cautiously, and verify species-specific needs before buying.

Rainbowfish vary in adult size and activity, so choose an aquarium for the adult fish and planned shoal—not for the juveniles in a shop. The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) gives broad guidance of 45 litres for a shoal of the smallest species and 120 litres for larger species over 8 cm; these are recommendations, not universal rules. Check a reliable species-level source before buying a particular fish.

This guide explains the tank-fit figures available in the research and how to use them. It does not treat an unverified list of 25 species as a checked comparison.

Rainbowfish size and tank-fit examples

These examples come from the sources named in the research. They illustrate why a single tank-size rule cannot cover every fish; confirm the needs of the exact species and group before purchase.

Example Size information in the research Tank-fit guidance
Threadfin Rainbowfish OATA gives 4 cm as an example. OATA’s 45-litre recommendation applies to a shoal of the smallest species. Threadfins need peaceful tankmates that will not nip their elongated fins.
Red Rainbowfish OATA gives 13 cm as an example. OATA recommends 120 litres for larger species over 8 cm. Check the identity and requirements of the fish being sold.
Boesemani Rainbowfish Aquarium Co-Op describes males reaching about 10 cm and females about 8 cm; shop juveniles may be smaller and less colorful. Use adult size and group needs to plan the aquarium. Aqueon recommends at least 50 gallons for most other Melanotaeniids, but that broad guidance is not a species-specific guarantee.

How to choose a rainbowfish for your aquarium

  1. Identify the fish. Ask for its scientific name. Common names can be ambiguous, and broad labels do not establish a species’ adult size or care requirements.
  2. Plan for adult size and the whole shoal. Rainbowfish are social fish. OATA advises keeping at least five, with more preferable; Aqueon advises six or more for Melanotaeniids. Choose a tank that can support the intended group.
  3. Compare the tank recommendations carefully. OATA gives 45 litres for a shoal of the smallest species and 120 litres for larger species over 8 cm. Aqueon suggests 30 gallons for dwarf neon and Celebes rainbowfish and at least 50 gallons for most other Melanotaeniids. These are different publishers’ broad recommendations, not interchangeable universal minimums.
  4. Consider activity and tankmates. OATA cautions against mixing active fish with timid or much smaller fish. Threadfins need peaceful tankmates that will not nip their elongated fins.
  5. Provide open swimming space and cover. OATA recommends open space, with plants or other cover useful for shy fish. It also says a filter is always essential.
  6. Check species-specific care before purchase. General group guidance is a starting point, not a substitute for confirming the fish’s requirements with a suitable species-level reference.

Rainbowfish care basics

Water and filtration

OATA gives a general suggested temperature range of 22–27°C and pH 6.5–8.0. It also advises keeping ammonia and nitrite at zero. These are group-level recommendations; check whether they suit the particular species and keep water conditions stable.

Groups and compatibility

Rainbowfish are shoaling fish. OATA advises at least five, with more preferable, and notes that keeping a higher proportion of females can help reduce male conflict. Aqueon advises six or more for Melanotaeniids. Do not apply either group-size recommendation without considering the fish and aquarium.

Match tankmates by size and activity. Fast, active fish may outcompete timid fish, and very small fish may be unsuitable companions for larger rainbowfish. Threadfins are particularly vulnerable to fin-nipping companions.

Food and maintenance

OATA describes rainbowfish as omnivores and recommends quality flake or granule food, supplemented with small live or frozen foods such as daphnia, bloodworm, or tubifex. Offer only what the fish consume within a few minutes.

OATA recommends weekly partial water changes of 25%, regular water testing at least weekly, treating tap water with conditioner, and gently rinsing filter media in removed aquarium water rather than under a tap. Chlorine or chloramine may harm beneficial filter bacteria.
