Presidential pets include more than dogs and cats: White House families kept children’s companions, working animals, livestock, and unusual creatures, while some diplomatic gifts went to zoos rather than becoming pets. The historical record is uneven, so no single list can establish that every president had a pet. The available research also does not confirm whether Donald Trump’s current-term household has one.
Here are well-documented examples of animals connected to presidential and First Family life, with attention to who cared for them, where they lived, and what role they played.
What counts as a presidential pet?
“Presidential pet” is not a precise historical category. An animal may have belonged to a president, a spouse, or a child; lived at the White House; worked on the grounds; or been received as a diplomatic gift. The White House Historical Association’s historical material includes companions and working animals, so an animal’s presence in the presidential story does not automatically mean it was the president’s personal pet.
| Type | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Family companion | An animal kept by the president, spouse, or child. | Rebecca, the Coolidge family’s raccoon. |
| Working animal | An animal kept for practical work rather than companionship. | Woodrow Wilson’s sheep grazed the White House grounds. |
| Public symbol | A pet whose public visibility became part of the administration’s image or story. | Franklin D. Roosevelt’s dog Fala. |
| Diplomatic gift | An animal presented to a president or family; it might not be kept as a household pet. | John F. Kennedy’s dog Pushinka, a gift from Nikita Khrushchev. |
Notable presidential animals through history
This is a selection of documented examples, not a complete census of every president’s privately owned animals. The historical record is strongest for some administrations and families, and ownership should be attributed carefully.

| President or family | Animal | Role and historical note |
|---|---|---|
| George Washington | Hounds and horses | Washington’s animals are associated with Mount Vernon, hunting, breeding, and military life, not a White House residence. |
| Thomas Jefferson | A mockingbird and a magpie | Jefferson kept mockingbirds, including Dick, and the White House Historical Association identifies a magpie among his pets. Do not infer that he kept a prairie dog merely from its appearance in a watercolor. |
| Ulysses S. Grant | Reb and Billy Button | A White House Historical Association gallery records the ponies carrying Grant’s children to school in 1869, illustrating that presidential animals could be working or family animals rather than indoor companions. |
| Rutherford B. Hayes family | Siam, a Siamese cat | A letter dated November 1, 1878 documents the cat’s arrival as a gift to Lucy Hayes. The Association says Siam became the beloved pet of daughter Fanny Hayes. |
| Theodore Roosevelt family | Dogs, cats, ponies, birds, and other animals | The children’s menagerie included Eli Yale the blue macaw, Emily Spinach the green snake, Josiah the badger, Baron Spreckle the hen, a one-legged rooster, and five named guinea pigs. The family also had familiar dogs and cats. |
| William Howard Taft | Pauline Wayne, a Holstein cow | Pauline arrived in 1910 as a replacement for Mooley Wooly. She grazed the grounds and supplied milk. After Taft lost the 1912 election, she returned to the farm where she had been raised in Kenosha, Wisconsin. |
| Woodrow Wilson | A flock of sheep | The sheep grazed the South Lawn during World War I, reducing the manpower needed to mow it. The White House Historical Association reports that the flock peaked at 48 and wool sales raised $52,823 for the Red Cross. |
| Warren G. Harding | Laddie Boy, an Airedale | Laddie Boy became a widely publicized presidential dog. Newspaper coverage and public appearances helped make him a celebrity. |
| Calvin and Grace Coolidge | Rebecca, a raccoon | Sent by a supporter in 1926 with the suggestion she be served at Thanksgiving, Rebecca instead became a family pet. Grace Coolidge walked her on a leash, and Rebecca appeared at public events. |
| Franklin D. Roosevelt | Fala, a Scottish terrier | Fala became a wartime icon and a political symbol. A 1943 MGM short film featured him in a home-front story; the White House Historical Association describes his later public role as well. |
| John F. Kennedy family | Pushinka and a varied household of pets | Pushinka was a gift from Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. The family also kept dogs, ponies, hamsters, a cat, birds, and other animals. |
| Lyndon B. Johnson | Yuki, a rescued dog | The White House Historical Association recalls Yuki for howling duets with the president. |
| Gerald Ford family | Liberty, a golden retriever | Liberty had puppies. In 1975, the Fords donated one puppy to a guide-dog program for the blind to publicize the cause. |
| George H. W. Bush family | Millie, an English springer spaniel | Millie and her puppies were part of the family’s public life; Barbara Bush showed them to Jordan’s King Hussein in 1989. |
| Bill Clinton family | Socks, a cat, and Buddy, a chocolate Labrador | Buddy arrived at the White House in December 1997 and drew public attention alongside Socks. The White House Historical Association also records the book Dear Socks, Dear Buddy: Kids’ Letters to the First Pets. |
| George W. Bush family | Spot, Barney, Miss Beazley, and India | The Association identifies English springer spaniel Spot in a 2001 White House photograph and records the family’s broader animal history. |
| Barack Obama family | Bo and Sunny, Portuguese water dogs | The dogs became familiar faces in White House communications and public life. |
How presidential animals served different roles
Companions and children’s pets
Many animals were part of family life, especially pets cared for by presidential children. The Roosevelt children’s menagerie and the Kennedy family’s broad collection show why an account should name the family member or household connection where known, rather than automatically calling every animal the president’s personal pet.
Working animals and livestock
Animals also performed practical work. Wilson’s sheep grazed the White House grounds during World War I, while Taft’s cow Pauline Wayne supplied milk. These animals belong in a history of presidential animal life, but their roles differ from those of companion pets.

Public symbols and goodwill ambassadors
Presidential pets could humanize a family, attract press attention, or help draw attention to a public cause. Harding’s Laddie Boy became a newspaper celebrity. Fala became a wartime icon and political figure. The Fords used one of Liberty’s puppies to publicize a guide-dog program, and Barbara Bush presented Millie and her puppies to Jordan’s King Hussein. These episodes made animals visible ambassadors, but they did not make policy.
Diplomatic gifts
A gift animal did not necessarily become a household pet. Pushinka, given to the Kennedy family by Nikita Khrushchev, was kept as a family dog. Other animals received as gifts could be transferred elsewhere. Always check the animal’s disposition before describing it as a White House resident.

What the record can—and cannot—tell us
The White House Historical Association’s 2019 article reports that 30 out of 44 presidents had a dog during their presidencies. That statistic is specific to the article’s date and denominator; it is not a current count of all presidents or a count of every kind of animal. The Association’s historical material does not provide a verified pet entry for every president.
The same caution applies to current claims. The available research does not establish whether Donald Trump’s current-term household has a pet. It is more accurate to say that the status could not be confirmed from these sources than to claim definitively that there is no pet.

Did Donald Trump have a pet in his current term?
The sources in the research dossier do not establish whether Trump’s current-term household has a pet. The status should be described as unconfirmed rather than as a definite yes or no.
Were all presidential animals pets?
No. Some were working animals or livestock, while some diplomatic gifts were transferred to other facilities. A useful account identifies the animal’s role, who cared for it, and where it lived.
