Before sharing, search the image and distinctive wording, inspect the visible account history and comments, and check again that the post has not changed. These checks can raise concerns, but none guarantees whether an appeal is genuine.
What the “lost injured dog” hoax looks like
The familiar appeal says someone found an injured dog by the roadside, took it to a veterinarian, and wants help finding the owner. Malwarebytes reported examples that reused similar photos and stories while changing the claimed location. Some appeared in local community, classified, or real-estate groups; some had disabled comments or came from accounts with little posting history or recent creation dates. These are warning signs to investigate, not proof that a particular post is false.
The key concern is that an appeal can change after it attracts attention. In one Donegal case reported by Donegal Daily, a widely shared injured-dog appeal was changed to promote a cashback survey website. The report said the appeal had been shared almost 250 times before the change; that is one reported case, not a measure of how common the tactic is.
How to check before sharing
- Search the photo. Use TinEye or an image-search feature from a major search engine to see whether the same picture appears elsewhere. A matching image can be a strong reason to investigate whether the story has been copied or the location changed. A clean search does not prove the image is genuine: it may have been flipped, and deepfakes may not return results.
- Search distinctive wording. Copy a distinctive sentence from the appeal into a search engine. Repeated wording associated with the same or similar photo in different places can reveal a copied campaign.
- Inspect the visible account history. Where available, look for a recent profile creation date, little ordinary posting history, or a changed name. These details provide context, but they do not establish that the appeal is fake.
- Notice whether comments are disabled. Disabled replies are a warning flag reported in these campaigns, but they are not conclusive. Consider the other evidence as well.
- Recheck the post before resharing. A post may be edited after it has spread. If you already shared it, revisit the original and confirm that its current content is still the dog appeal before repeating it elsewhere.

Should I share a lost injured dog post?
Pause and do the checks first. If you find the same image or wording tied to different places, or see that the post has changed into an unrelated promotion, do not reshare it as a current dog appeal. If the checks turn up no match, that still does not prove the appeal is authentic.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does “bump” prove that a lost-dog post is fake?
No. “Please bump this post to help me find the owner” appeared in an example appeal quoted in the Malwarebytes report, but the word alone does not establish that a post is fraudulent.
What if a reverse-image search finds nothing?
A lack of results does not authenticate the photo. Flipped images can avoid matching, and deepfakes may not return results. Check the wording, visible profile history, comments, and current post content too.
