Some big and medium-to-large dog breeds tend to shed less, but no dog is completely non-shedding or guaranteed to be allergy-safe. Lower shedding often means more coat maintenance, so compare grooming, exercise, temperament, and size—not loose hair alone.

This practical roundup includes large dogs and breeds commonly described as medium-to-large; it is not a measured shedding ranking. Coat and adult size can vary, especially in individual dogs, so confirm what to expect before choosing.

First, understand the low-shedding trade-off

What you may get less of What you may need more of
Loose hair around the home Brushing and detangling to prevent mats
Visible shedding Trimming, clipping, or other coat-specific grooming
Routine coat care for some short coats Professional grooming for some long, curly, or continuously growing coats
One kind of household cleanup Exercise, training, socialization, and a recurring grooming budget

A dog grooming slicker brush may help with coats that need regular brushing, but choose grooming tools to suit the individual coat. A brush does not replace professional grooming when needed, and it does not control dog allergy.

Large and medium-to-large low-shedding candidates

1. Standard Poodle

The Standard Poodle is a large, low-shedding choice with a continuously growing coat. Regular brushing and coat care are essential; its active, intelligent nature also calls for daily exercise and engagement.

Do not choose a breed for allergies alone

No dog breed is guaranteed to be hypoallergenic. Allergens can come from dander, saliva, skin, and urine as well as fur, and a person’s reaction can differ between individual dogs. Zoetis notes that even hairless and supposedly “hypoallergenic” dogs shed dander.

If someone in your household has a diagnosed dog allergy or asthma, consult an allergist and spend time with the individual dog before committing. Do not rely on a breed label or a breeder’s allergy-related claim as a guarantee.

Before bringing home a low-shedding large dog

  1. Plan the coat-care routine. Ask what brushing, detangling, trimming, bathing, or professional grooming the individual coat needs.
  2. Match exercise to your life. Sporting and working breeds need activity suited to their needs, along with training and engagement.
  3. Check actual adult size. Several breeds in this roundup are medium-to-large or come in multiple sizes or varieties.
  4. Meet the individual dog. Temperament and, where relevant, allergy compatibility cannot be guaranteed by breed alone.
  5. Ask a breeder or rescue specific questions. Discuss expected adult size, temperament, health screening, coat condition, and the care routine already in place.
  6. Consider household management. Individual temperament, socialization, and active supervision matter more than a blanket breed label.

FAQ

Do any big dog breeds truly not shed?

No. “Low-shedding” is more accurate: no breed guarantees that a dog will shed no hair or dander.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are large low-shedding dogs hypoallergenic?

No breed guarantees an allergy-free experience. Allergens may come from dander, saliva, skin, and urine as well as fur, and reactions vary between people and individual dogs.

Are low-shedding large dogs easier to groom?

Not necessarily. Some coats need regular brushing and grooming; long coats may need frequent attention, and corded coats require specialized maintenance. Ask about the individual dog’s routine before choosing.

Which large dogs tend to shed less?

Examples supported by the sources reviewed for this article include the Standard Poodle, Giant Schnauzer, Irish Water Spaniel, Afghan Hound, Airedale Terrier, Komondor, and Black Russian Terrier. Some other suitable candidates are medium-to-large or size-qualified rather than unambiguously large.

The Bottom Line

The best low-shedding big dog is not simply the one that leaves the least hair around the home. Choose a dog whose size, coat care, exercise, training, and individual temperament fit your household. If allergies matter, treat compatibility as an individual question—not a breed-label promise.
