One dog was injured, dropped at the Finger Lake checkpoint, and flown to Anchorage for veterinary evaluation. Iditarod officials later imposed a two-hour penalty because they found the moose had not been sufficiently gutted under Rule 34.
The incident notice and the later penalty decision describe different parts of the timeline: officials said they were notified at 1:43 a.m., while the panel’s findings recorded the moose as dispatched at about 1:32 a.m.
What happened on the trail?
The Iditarod Trail Committee reported that the encounter happened about 14 miles from the Skwentna checkpoint, as Seavey’s team traveled toward Finger Lake. The official incident account said the moose became entangled with the dogs and musher, and Seavey dispatched it in self-defense. Race officials were notified at 1:43 a.m. on March 4, 2024. The later panel decision recorded the dispatch at about 1:32 a.m.
In remarks to an Iditarod Insider television crew quoted by the Associated Press, Seavey said, “It fell on my sled, it was sprawled on the trail,” and, “I gutted it the best I could, but it was ugly.” These are Seavey’s reported statements; the panel separately assessed whether his handling of the carcass met the race rule.

What does Iditarod Rule 34 require?
The 2024 Iditarod rules say that when a musher kills an edible big-game animal, such as a moose, in defense of life or property, the musher must gut it and report the incident to a race official at the next checkpoint. The rule also says following teams must help gut the animal when possible and may not pass until it has been gutted and the musher who killed it has proceeded.
The rule explains why officials reviewed the carcass handling after accepting the defensive account. It does not mean Seavey was penalized for shooting the moose.
