What does “blue” mean in cats?
In cat terminology, “blue” describes a diluted coat color that looks gray. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory explains that a mutation in the MLPH gene affects pigment distribution in the hair shaft; black is diluted to gray, which breeders call blue. Other genes also affect appearance.
Blue-gray coloring occurs in multiple breeds and in domestic cats, so it cannot establish pedigree. Russian Blues, Chartreux, and Korats have blue-only breed standards in the sources reviewed; the Nebelung is a separate, rare blue breed related to the Russian Blue.
Four blue breeds to know
Russian Blue
The Russian Blue has a short, dense blue coat tipped with silver and vivid green eyes in mature cats. It is graceful and fine-boned. TICA describes the breed as intelligent and playful, affectionate with family, and often reserved around strangers. TICA recommends brushing or combing once or twice weekly. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) also cautions that appetite and too little interactive exercise can contribute to obesity.

Chartreux
The Chartreux is a French breed with a medium-short, dense, slightly woolly blue-gray coat and characteristic orange eyes. It is generally more robust in build than a Russian Blue. CFA characterizes the breed as mild-tempered. Its coat texture differs from a smooth, short coat, so ask about grooming needs rather than assuming all blue shorthairs are alike. Korat
The Korat has a short, silver-tipped blue coat, a heart-shaped head, and luminous green eyes when mature. Its eye color can take time to develop. The short coat lacks an undercoat and is comparatively easy to groom. TICA describes the Korat as playful and inquisitive; CFA provides further breed details.
Nebelung
The Nebelung is a rare, medium-longhaired blue breed related to the Russian Blue, but it is treated as its own breed—not simply a longhaired Russian Blue. Its silky blue coat is frosted with silver. Ask a breeder about coat care and grooming expectations. See TICA’s Nebelung profile.

Breed descriptions can help you frame questions, but they do not predict an individual cat’s personality. Compare coat length and texture, your grooming preferences, activity and social needs, and how the cat responds to your household.
Which blue cat might fit your home?
Consider the individual cat’s demonstrated comfort with people, activity level, health, history, and grooming needs. A Russian Blue may appeal to someone who wants a playful but often reserved companion; a Chartreux to someone drawn to a robust cat described as mild-tempered; and a Korat to someone who enjoys an inquisitive, playful cat. The Nebelung’s longer coat makes grooming expectations worth discussing.
If pedigree is not important, a blue domestic cat may be a good match. Shelter descriptions such as “gray,” “blue,” or “blue-and-white” describe appearance, not verified breed. For a pedigree claim, ask for reliable registration or pedigree documentation rather than relying on coat color or photographs.

How to choose responsibly
- Compare practical needs. Consider coat length and texture, brushing you are prepared to do, and the cat’s activity and social preferences.
- Meet or learn about the individual cat. Ask about its behavior and comfort with the people and animals in your home.
- For a pedigreed cat, request documentation. Seek reliable pedigree or registration records and consult a recognized breed association.
- Discuss care with the source. Ask a breeder or rescue about the cat’s grooming needs, history, and any available health information.
Coat care and enrichment
Match grooming to the cat’s coat and tolerance. TICA recommends brushing or combing a Russian Blue once or twice weekly. The Chartreux’s dense, slightly woolly coat and the Nebelung’s medium-long coat make coat-care questions useful; the Korat’s short coat without an undercoat is comparatively easy to groom. A comfortable brush or comb suited to the coat can help; introduce it gradually and stop if the cat becomes distressed.
Interactive play and enrichment can support a cat’s needs regardless of color or breed. Offer appropriate opportunities to play, climb, scratch, and explore, and adapt activities to the individual cat.

No. Do not assume a Russian Blue or another blue cat is hypoallergenic. The CFA Russian Blue Breed Council says the breed’s hypoallergenic reputation is unsupported. Coat color does not establish how an individual person will react; people with significant allergies should not make a long-term decision based on a breed label alone.

How can I tell whether a gray cat is really a Russian Blue?
Appearance alone cannot verify pedigree. Ask for reliable registration or pedigree documentation; many domestic cats and breeds can have blue-gray coats.
Which blue cat is best for my home?
