There is no single best tick treatment for every cat: products differ in the tick species on their U.S. labels, eligible age and weight, duration, and other parasite coverage. Compare those details with your cat’s health and exposure, and ask a veterinarian to help select a product rather than treating this list as a universal ranking.
Use only a product labeled for cats and your cat’s age and weight. Check the current package label before use, especially because indications can change; discuss health conditions and other medications with your veterinarian.
Quick comparison: tick treatments for cats
This is a use-case comparison, not a head-to-head effectiveness ranking. The tick species and durations below are label-specific U.S. indications; they do not guarantee protection from every tick or eliminate disease risk. Verify current labels before use.
| Product | Format and status | Named tick coverage and interval | Minimum on the U.S. label | Possible fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revolution Plus | Monthly topical; prescription | Lone star, Gulf Coast, American dog, and black-legged ticks; one month | 8 weeks and 2.8 lb | Monthly option with broad named tick coverage |
| Bravecto topical for cats | Topical; prescription | Black-legged and Asian longhorned ticks for 12 weeks; American dog ticks for 8 weeks; Gulf Coast ticks for 12 weeks under the 2026 indication for eligible cats | 6 months and 2.6 lb | Longer intervals for named ticks |
| NexGard COMBO | Monthly topical; prescription | Black-legged and lone star ticks for one month | 8 weeks and 1.8 lb | Monthly topical with additional parasite indications |
| Credelio CAT | Monthly oral chewable tablet; prescription | Black-legged ticks for one month | 6 months and 2.0 lb for tick use | Owners who prefer an oral treatment |
| Seresto for cats | Collar; over the counter | Kills and repels fleas and ticks for up to eight continuous months | Follow the current cat-collar label | Long-duration, non-prescription convenience |
| Bravecto Plus | Topical every two months; prescription | Black-legged, American dog, and Asian longhorned ticks for two months; Gulf Coast ticks for two months under the 2026 indication for eligible cats | 6 months and 2.6 lb | Two-month topical with additional parasite indications |
Important distinction: Bravecto topical and Bravecto Plus are different products. Their tick indications and intervals differ. The 2026 Gulf Coast tick additions apply only to cats meeting the stated age and weight criteria; check the current label for exact directions.

Six options by use case
1. Revolution Plus: monthly topical with broad named tick coverage
Revolution Plus contains selamectin and sarolaner. Its U.S. indication names lone star, Gulf Coast, American dog, and black-legged ticks for one month. It also has indications for heartworm disease, fleas, ear mites, roundworms, and hookworms, and prevents flea-mediated tapeworm infection through flea control.
It is a prescription topical for cats and kittens at least 8 weeks old and weighing at least 2.8 pounds. Safe use has not been established in kittens younger than 8 weeks or in breeding, pregnant, or lactating cats. Ask a veterinarian whether its indications fit your cat.
Possible fit: You want monthly treatment with several named tick indications and other parasite coverage.
Consider: Sarolaner is an isoxazoline. The FDA notes reports of neurologic reactions, including tremors, ataxia, and seizures, in some animals. The FDA considers isoxazoline products safe and effective for dogs and cats, but your cat’s history matters.
2. Bravecto topical for cats: longer intervals for named ticks
Bravecto topical solution for cats contains fluralaner. Its labeled intervals vary by tick: 12 weeks for black-legged and Asian longhorned ticks, and 8 weeks for American dog ticks. FDA’s 2026 approval records also list a 12-week Gulf Coast tick indication for cats and kittens at least 6 months old and weighing at least 2.6 pounds. Confirm the current label, including eligibility, before use.
This is a prescription topical, not a monthly product. Do not describe its duration as the same for every tick species. Ask your veterinarian about its suitability, particularly if your cat has reacted to a parasite product before.
Possible fit: Your cat meets the label requirements and you want fewer application dates for the tick species covered.
Consider: The duration varies by tick species, and the Gulf Coast indication has specific age and weight criteria.

3. NexGard COMBO: monthly combination topical
NexGard COMBO combines esafoxolaner, eprinomectin, and praziquantel. Its U.S. tick indications name black-legged and lone star ticks for one month. It also has indications for fleas, heartworm disease, roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms.

It is a prescription topical for cats and kittens at least 8 weeks old and weighing at least 1.8 pounds. Its named tick coverage is not identical to Revolution Plus or the Bravecto products.
Possible fit: You want a monthly topical with multiple parasite indications, and your veterinarian agrees it suits your cat.
Consider: Esafoxolaner is an isoxazoline. Discuss the FDA neurologic safety information and your cat’s history with your veterinarian.

Credelio CAT contains lotilaner and is given monthly. FDA states its tick indication is treatment and control of black-legged ticks for one month in cats and kittens at least 6 months old and weighing at least 2 pounds. Its flea indication starts at 8 weeks, but that younger age does not establish eligibility for tick treatment. Give it with food or within 30 minutes of feeding, following the current label.
Possible fit: Your cat accepts oral medicine and you prefer a tablet to a topical or collar.
Consider: Its tick indication names black-legged ticks. Credelio CAT is an isoxazoline; discuss your cat’s health history and other medicines with your veterinarian.
5. Seresto for cats: long-duration OTC collar
Seresto for cats is an over-the-counter collar that the manufacturer says kills and repels fleas and ticks for up to eight continuous months. It uses imidacloprid and flumethrin. Read the complete current cat-collar label for age, fit, use, and safety instructions.

That difference is not a safety ranking. EPA advises owners to follow product labels and has required additional mitigation measures for Seresto products. A collar does not guarantee that no tick will attach or remove all disease risk.
Possible fit: Your cat tolerates a collar and you want an OTC option with a long stated duration.

Bravecto Plus combines fluralaner and moxidectin and is administered every two months. U.S. materials list two-month indications for black-legged, American dog, and Asian longhorned ticks. FDA’s 2026 approval records also list a two-month Gulf Coast tick indication for cats and kittens at least 6 months old and weighing at least 2.6 pounds. Confirm current label details and eligibility before use.
It also has heartworm, roundworm, and hookworm indications. This is a prescription topical; ask a veterinarian whether its parasite coverage and health considerations fit your cat.
Possible fit: You want a two-month topical with additional parasite indications.
Consider: Bravecto Plus is not interchangeable with regular Bravecto topical. Its interval and labeled indications differ.
How to choose a tick treatment for your cat
Compare the tick species and duration
Start with the ticks named on each product’s current label and the ticks relevant to your area. The listed species and intervals differ among products. A label indication is not a promise of protection against every local tick or tick-borne disease.

Check your cat’s exact age and weight against the package label. Consider whether a topical, oral medicine, or collar is practical for your household, and whether other parasite indications matter. Do not assume that products with overlapping ingredients or uses are interchangeable.
Discuss health history and other medicines
Ask a veterinarian to help choose, especially if your cat is ill, has a neurologic history, takes other medicines, is pregnant or nursing, or has reacted to a parasite product. Do not combine products or repeat a dose early unless a veterinarian directs you to.

Use a product labeled for cats
Never use a dog flea or tick product on a cat, or divide a dog product to make a cat dose. The EPA warns that some pesticides are more toxic to one species than another. Follow the product’s species, age, weight, and use instructions.

Understand the isoxazoline caveat
Bravecto topical, Bravecto Plus, Credelio CAT, NexGard COMBO, and Revolution Plus are in the isoxazoline class. The FDA reports possible neurologic adverse reactions, including muscle tremors, ataxia, and seizures, in some animals. The FDA says most dogs and cats have not had neurologic adverse reactions, but seizures may occur without a prior history. Discuss your cat’s history with a veterinarian; the warning does not mean every cat will have a reaction.
Check the regulator and current label
In the United States, FDA-approved animal drug labels include a six-digit NADA or ANADA number; EPA-registered pesticide labels carry an EPA Registration Number. Check the current package label and regulator information rather than relying on an old product description.
How do I remove a tick from my cat?
A tick remover can help remove an attached tick, including from a kitten too young for flea and tick products, but it does not prevent future exposure. Remove an attached tick carefully according to veterinary guidance. Ask a veterinarian for help if removal is difficult or your cat appears ill after exposure.
A cat tick remover is a physical removal aid, not ongoing prevention. Check cats that go outdoors or live with outdoor animals, since ticks can be carried into the home.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best tick treatment for cats?
There is no universal best choice. Compare the tick species on the current label, duration, age and weight requirements, delivery form, and other parasite indications, then ask a veterinarian to help select for your cat.
What flea and tick medicine is safe for cats?
Use only products labeled for cats and your cat’s age and weight, following the current package directions. Discuss health conditions, medications, and neurologic history with a veterinarian. Never apply a dog product to a cat.
Can I use dog tick treatment on my cat?
No. Dog and cat products are not interchangeable, and some pesticides are more toxic to one species than another. Do not divide or adapt a dog product for a cat.
Is an oral tick treatment safer than a topical?
Not automatically. Safety depends on the product, its label, and the individual cat. Ask a veterinarian to consider your cat’s health history and other medicines.
Can a tick remover replace prevention?
No. A remover addresses an attached tick; it does not provide ongoing prevention. Use a labeled preventive only if it is appropriate for your cat, as advised by a veterinarian.
