Monty’s historic Westminster victory
Judge Paula Nykiel selected Monty from the seven group winners competing in the Best in Show final. Monty first won the Working Group, then defeated six other finalists for the overall title. Bourbon, a Whippet, was named Reserve Best in Show.
The result was a milestone for Giant Schnauzers: no dog of the breed had previously won Westminster Best in Show, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). Monty’s Westminster record
Monty won the Westminster Working Group in 2023, 2024, and 2025, according to the AKC. Giant Schnauzers had won the Working Group six times in total, with three of those victories going to Monty. The Working Group win advances a dog to the seven-dog Best in Show final; it is distinct from the overall Best in Show award.
The Associated Press reports that Monty had reached Best in Show judging twice before his 2025 victory. His win made him the first Giant Schnauzer to take Westminster’s top award.
