National Dog Day in 2024 fell on Monday, August 26. We love dogs for the bonds we build with them: the welcome at the door, shared walks and play, and the care and training woven into everyday life. Those bonds can bring joy, and remembering a beloved dog can also bring grief.
For the Daily Paws staff members whose stories shaped this reflection, loving a dog means knowing an individual animal—not expecting every dog or relationship to be the same.
The everyday moments that make a bond
Dogs can become part of family life through ordinary routines and the memories that collect around them. A greeting at home, a walk or hike together, a game, or the patient work of learning to care for one another can matter as much as a big milestone.
Jenna Stregowski, pet health and behavior editor, put one part of that bond simply: “Chloe taught me how to truly care for a dog.” Austin Cannon, editor, remembered a dog this way: “Most importantly, she was simply a good dog who loved us.” These are personal recollections, not promises about what every dog will be like.

Dogs as part of the family
Many people think of pets as family. The Humane Society of the United States report “More Than a Pet: A New Study of How Americans View Pets” cites Pew Research Center’s 2023 finding that 97% of U.S. pet owners say their pets are part of their family. That figure is about pets generally, not dogs alone.
