Check each exact species and the aquarium’s size, water conditions, feeding needs, and stocking order before choosing tankmates.
Use the examples below as starting points for species-specific research, not as a blanket safe list. Individual fish and aquarium conditions can change the outcome.
Key takeaways
- Compare adult size, activity, temperament, resemblance, habitat, diet, and water needs for each proposed fish.
- Similar-looking or similarly shaped fish may compete or become territorial; active fish may also trouble shy tankmates.
- Clownfish vary in size and aggression. OATA recommends a male-female pair because groups may bully one another.
- Tangs and rabbitfish can be compatible when they do not look too similar, but they are active fish and need suitable space.
- Stock gradually into a mature, appropriately sized aquarium, and confirm ammonia and nitrite are zero before adding fish.
What determines whether marine fish can live together?
Compatibility depends on the exact species and aquarium, not just broad labels such as “wrasse,” “goby,” or “tang.” Compare adult size, activity and swimming needs, aggression, resemblance, feeding needs, habitat, water requirements, and reef or invertebrate compatibility.
Compatibility charts can help narrow options, but they cannot predict every pairing. LiveAquaria’s compatibility-chart guidance says, “Remember, no guarantees can be made about the compatibility or incompatibility of any particular species of fish.” Ask a knowledgeable marine retailer or aquatic veterinarian about uncertain combinations.

| Factor | What to check | Potential concern |
|---|---|---|
| Adult size and activity | Full-grown size, swimming behavior, and aquarium dimensions | An active or large fish lacks adequate room, or a tankmate is small enough to be threatened. |
| Temperament and territory | Species behavior and overlap in defended areas | Chasing, bullying, or a fish being kept from shelter or food. |
| Appearance and body shape | Whether prospective tankmates look alike or have similar shapes | Competition or territorial behavior between similar-looking fish. |
| Feeding and habitat | Diet, feeding behavior, and use of aquarium space | A shy fish is stressed or outcompeted, or fish compete for the same habitat. |
| Water and aquarium needs | Water conditions, tank maturity, cover, and total stocking | The aquarium cannot meet the needs of the whole adult community. |
| Reef and invertebrate compatibility | Whether either animal threatens corals or invertebrates | A proposed fish is unsuitable for the aquarium’s reef setup. |
Which marine fish can live together?
Community-fish examples include wrasses, angelfish, gobies, clownfish, butterflyfish, and cardinalfish, according to LiveAquaria. That list does not mean every fish in one category can live with every fish in another. Check the individual species and the existing aquarium before treating any combination as suitable.
| Fish group | What the reviewed guidance says | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Clownfish | Size and temperament vary. OATA recommends a male-female pair because groups may bully one another. | Species, adult size, aquarium space, and compatibility with existing fish. |
| Tangs and rabbitfish | OATA says they can be mixed when they do not look too similar. Tangs with similar body shapes may be territorial, and active fish may trouble shy tankmates. | Adult size, activity, resemblance, swimming space, and stocking order. |
| Angelfish | Behavior varies by species; some may be aggressive toward the same or similar-looking species. | Exact species, adult size, activity, aquarium volume, and proposed tankmates. |
| Other community fish | Wrasses, gobies, butterflyfish, and cardinalfish are examples of community-fish categories, not a guarantee of pairwise compatibility. | Exact species requirements and the full existing stocking plan. |
Can clownfish live with other fish?
Clownfish may live with other fish if their tankmates and aquarium meet the needs of the exact species. Clownfish differ in size and temperament: common clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) and percula clownfish (A. percula) are unlikely to exceed 10 cm, while maroon, tomato, and Clarkii clownfish grow larger than 10 cm, according to OATA’s clownfish care sheet.
OATA recommends keeping clownfish as a male-female pair because groups may lead to bullying. Its care sheet suggests at least 60 litres for a pair of smaller species and at least 120 litres for larger species; more space is needed when other species are kept with them. These are care-sheet recommendations, not a complete stocking formula. OATA also says anemones are not required to keep clownfish successfully in aquariums.
Can tangs and rabbitfish live together?
Tangs and rabbitfish can be compatible when they do not look too similar, but both are active fish. OATA cautions against pairing them with shy species. It identifies angelfish, damsels, and some butterflyfish as possible tankmates; these examples still require species-specific checks.

Similar-shaped tangs may be territorial. OATA recommends adding them at the same time, toward the end of stocking, and consulting a knowledgeable retailer. Its care sheet gives a general guideline of at least 300 litres for one tang or rabbitfish under 20 cm; this is not a universal minimum for every species, and larger or more active fish need more space. Some tangs can grow to 40 cm, while rabbitfish generally remain below 30 cm.
Can angelfish live with other marine fish?
Angelfish behavior and aquarium needs depend on the species. OATA says some species can be kept in male-female pairs, while others may be aggressive toward the same or similar-looking species.
OATA recommends at least 300 litres for a single smaller species under 15 cm and says larger species need significantly larger aquariums. Active fish and mixed-species setups also need more room. Do not treat this figure as a recommendation for every angelfish.
What aquarium conditions are needed before adding fish?
Stock gradually into a mature aquarium sized for the adult fish and existing tankmates. OATA warns that adding fish too quickly can outpace beneficial bacteria and lead to ammonia or nitrite problems. Confirm ammonia and nitrite are zero before adding fish.

| Parameter | OATA care-sheet guide | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Salinity | 1.020–1.025 | A group-level guide; confirm the exact species’ needs and keep conditions stable. |
| Temperature | 24–26°C | A group-level guide, not a guarantee that all species have identical needs. |
| pH | 7.9–8.3 | A group-level guide; confirm species requirements. |
| Ammonia | Zero | Confirm it is zero before adding fish. |
| Nitrite | Zero | Confirm it is zero before adding fish. |
These figures are from OATA’s tang and rabbitfish care sheet, dated September 2022. They are group-level care guidelines, and species-specific or reef requirements may differ. A marine aquarium test kit can help monitor water quality; match the kit’s included tests to the parameters you need to check. A refractometer or hydrometer can be used to monitor salinity.
How should you choose and add compatible fish?
- List exact species. Record the current and proposed fish by species, not only by trade name or broad group.
- Check adult needs. Compare adult size, activity, behavior, diet, water needs, and required aquarium space.
- Check for overlap. Look for similar appearance or body shape, territorial behavior, and active fish paired with shy ones.
- Assess reef compatibility. If the aquarium is a reef setup, check whether either animal threatens corals or invertebrates.
- Stock gradually. Add fish to a mature, appropriately sized aquarium, and follow a deliberate stocking order.
- Observe and test. Watch behavior after introduction and monitor water quality. Confirm ammonia and nitrite are zero before adding more fish.
- Get advice when uncertain. Consult a knowledgeable marine retailer or aquatic veterinarian about high-risk or unclear combinations.
How many marine fish can live in one aquarium?
There is no universal stocking number in the reviewed guidance. Aquarium capacity depends on the species, their adult size and activity, water conditions, compatibility, and the aquarium’s dimensions and maturity. Do not use a single fish-per-volume rule as a substitute for checking the final adult community.
FAQ
Can I use a compatibility chart to choose tankmates?
A chart can narrow options, but it cannot guarantee that a particular pairing will work. Check the exact species and aquarium conditions, then observe behavior after introduction.
Can I keep two tangs together?
It depends on the species and aquarium. OATA warns that similar-shaped tangs may be territorial and recommends adding compatible similar-shaped tangs at the same time, toward the end of stocking, with advice from a knowledgeable retailer.

How much space does a tang or rabbitfish need?
OATA gives a general guideline of at least 300 litres for one tang or rabbitfish under 20 cm, while noting that larger and more active fish need more space. It is not a universal minimum for every species.
Do clownfish need an anemone?
No. OATA says anemones are not required to keep clownfish successfully in aquariums.
The Bottom Line
Marine fish can live together when their exact species have compatible adult size, activity, temperament, appearance, and aquarium needs. Use charts and group-level guidance only as starting points, stock gradually into a mature aquarium, and check behavior and water quality rather than assuming any combination is guaranteed.
