“CatGPT” has referred to more than one project, so what it does depends on which one you mean. The 2023 CatGPT covered by SlashGear was presented as a playful chatbot with meow-and-GIF and OpenAI-connected modes; a creator-documented site with a similar name simply returned random meows and did not use AI. Neither description establishes that CatGPT can translate a real cat’s sounds or thoughts.
Cornell later launched a separate CatGPT for feline-health education. These services have different purposes and should not be treated as one product.
Key takeaways
- “CatGPT” is an ambiguous name used in different contexts.
- SlashGear’s May 2023 report described GPT-Meow, which returned a random cat GIF and meow-only text, and CatGPT-FURR, described as connecting to OpenAI for AI answers.
- A creator-documented site returned random meows, did not use ChatGPT or other AI, and did nothing with user input.
- Neither source establishes that a CatGPT service listens to or translates real cats.
- Cornell’s separate CatGPT is intended for feline-health education and uses Cornell material and research abstracts.
What was the original CatGPT chatbot?
The title refers to a playful 2023 CatGPT chatbot experience, not a real cat translator. SlashGear described a service with cat-themed responses and GIFs, including one mode connected to OpenAI. Separately, the creator’s repository documents a site built for fun that returned random meows and did not use AI or process user input. The available evidence does not show that these descriptions refer to the same implementation.
In its May 4, 2023 report about CatGPT, SlashGear described the “ask a cat anything” concept as a playful chatbot experience. That wording was humorous branding: the report does not establish that the service could understand a real cat.

The creator-documented site and the service covered by SlashGear should not be merged into a single feature list. The sources describe different behavior, and they do not establish shared developers, technology, or purpose.
How did GPT-Meow and CatGPT-FURR work?
SlashGear described two modes in the CatGPT it covered. Its account distinguishes the novelty mode from the OpenAI-connected option.
| Mode or project | What the source describes | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-Meow | SlashGear said it returned a random funny cat GIF and text made up of meows. | A novelty response, not a translation of feline communication. |
| CatGPT-FURR | SlashGear described it as “Real AI + GIFs,” connected to OpenAI. | An AI-connected cat-themed experience, as described by SlashGear; the report does not establish a proprietary model. |
| Creator-documented site | The creator’s repository says it returned random meows, did not use ChatGPT or other AI, and did nothing with user input. | A separate documented project, not evidence about the operation of every service called CatGPT. |
SlashGear’s example of GPT-Meow was a string of “meow” variations. The joke was the cat-like response, not a hidden meaning from an actual animal.
Keep the attribution clear: the OpenAI connection and two modes are features described by SlashGear’s report. The creator’s repository, by contrast, says its documented site did not actually use ChatGPT or another form of AI.
Is CatGPT a real cat translator?
No. Neither the creator’s description nor SlashGear’s report establishes that CatGPT listened to real cat sounds, translated vocalizations, or knew what a cat was thinking. The documented site returned random meows; SlashGear described a cat-themed chatbot experience.

“Ask a cat anything” is playful branding, not evidence of communication with an animal. A generated meow or AI answer should not be interpreted as a translation of a particular cat’s intent.
Why are there several CatGPT tools?
“CatGPT” is a name used in different contexts. The sources describe a creator-documented random-meow site, the two-mode chatbot covered by SlashGear in 2023, and Cornell’s later feline-health education tool. The shared name does not show that these projects share developers, technology, or purpose.
| Project or account | Purpose or response | Information basis or evidence | Access or status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creator-documented site | Fun; returned random meows. | The creator’s repository says it did not use AI and did nothing with user input. | Current operation and access are not verified by the available evidence. |
| CatGPT covered by SlashGear in 2023 | GPT-Meow with meows and GIFs, and CatGPT-FURR described as OpenAI-connected. | SlashGear’s May 2023 report. | Historical coverage; current operation, price, and features are not verified. |
| Cornell CatGPT | Feline-health education. | Cornell says it uses Feline Health Center articles and a database of abstracts from peer-reviewed publications. | Cornell’s current health-information page lists CatGPT; initial ChatGPT app-store access required ChatGPT Plus. |
What is Cornell’s CatGPT?
Cornell’s CatGPT is a separate feline-health education tool launched by the Cornell Feline Health Center on March 18, 2024. Cornell says it was configured to use the center’s articles and a database of abstracts from peer-reviewed publications.

The Cornell Chronicle announcement described the launch and the tool’s information basis. Ben Maddox, chief information officer for Cornell’s Ithaca campus and Cornell Tech, said: “Rather than go in deep with one approach, we want to create an environment of experimentation.”
Cornell reported that its initial ChatGPT app-store version required ChatGPT Plus. That is historical access information, not a verified current subscription requirement. Cornell’s current Feline Health Center health-information page lists CatGPT as an AI chatbot.
