Tuna vary widely in size, so there is no single “typical tuna” measurement. NOAA Fisheries gives Pacific bluefin adults at about 4 feet 11 inches and 130 pounds, with a maximum reported size of 9.8 feet and 990 pounds; other tuna size figures depend on species and region.
Here are verified examples for prominent bluefin, bigeye, albacore, and yellowfin tuna. These figures are not a complete ranking of all tuna species, and the sources do not use identical size measures.
Tuna size at a glance
| Species and region | Adult size or upper-size figure | Source and context |
|---|---|---|
| Pacific bluefin | Adults: about 4 ft 11 in and 130 lb; maximum reported: 9.8 ft and 990 lb | NOAA Fisheries; adult estimate and maximum are distinct figures. |
| Atlantic bluefin | Maximum published: 684 kg (about 1,508 lb); maximum length: 458 cm total length | FishBase; its common length figure is 200 cm fork length. |
| Pacific bigeye | Can reach about 6.5 ft | NOAA Fisheries; approximate upper length. |
| Atlantic bigeye | Can reach about 5.5 ft | NOAA Fisheries; approximate upper length. |
| North Atlantic albacore | More than 4 ft and 88 lb | NOAA Fisheries; upper-size description. |
| Atlantic yellowfin | Can reach 400 lb | NOAA Fisheries; upper weight, not an average. |
These are source-reported estimates or maximums, not promises about the size of any individual fish. Not every source supplies both length and weight, so the rows are not a like-for-like ranking.
What is the biggest type of tuna?
Among the figures in this guide, Atlantic bluefin has the largest published weight: FishBase lists a maximum published weight of 684 kg and a maximum length of 458 cm total length. Those are maximum published figures, not typical adult measurements.

How large are bigeye, albacore, and yellowfin?
Bigeye tuna
NOAA Fisheries says Pacific bigeye can reach about 6.5 feet, while its Atlantic bigeye profile gives about 5.5 feet. Keep the regional figures attached to their sources rather than treating them as one universal maximum. NOAA also notes that bigeye and yellowfin look fairly similar, so size alone is not a reliable way to identify them.

How to compare tuna size figures
Size descriptions can refer to different things: an approximate adult size, a maximum reported by a fisheries authority, or the largest published specimen in a species database. Length figures may also use different measurement conventions.
- Check which species and region the figure describes.
- See whether the source calls it an adult size, a maximum, or a record.
- Check whether length is reported as total length or fork length; do not treat those measurements as interchangeable.
- Compare figures cautiously when one source gives only length and another gives only weight.
For example, FishBase lists Atlantic bluefin’s maximum length as 458 cm total length and its common length as 200 cm fork length. NOAA Fisheries reports Pacific bluefin adults at about 1.5 m and a maximum reported length of 3 m. The labels and context matter when comparing these numbers.

FAQ
How big do tuna get?
It depends on the species. NOAA Fisheries reports Pacific bluefin at up to 9.8 feet and 990 pounds, while FishBase lists an Atlantic bluefin maximum published weight of 684 kg. Other tuna, such as albacore, have lower reported upper-size figures in the sources cited here.
How big is an adult Pacific bluefin?
NOAA Fisheries gives an approximate adult size of 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in) and 60 kg (130 lb). It separately reports a maximum of 3 m (9.8 ft) and 450 kg (990 lb).

Are bigeye and yellowfin the same size?
The figures cited here are not directly comparable: NOAA Fisheries gives approximate upper lengths of about 6.5 feet for Pacific bigeye and 5.5 feet for Atlantic bigeye, while its Atlantic yellowfin page gives an upper weight of 400 pounds. NOAA notes that bigeye and yellowfin look fairly similar, so size alone does not identify a fish.
Why do tuna length figures differ?
Sources may describe different regions, use different measurement conventions, or report adult estimates rather than maximums. For instance, total length and fork length are distinct measures and should not be compared as if they were identical.
