What Nimble won at Westminster
The 11th annual Westminster Masters Agility Championship took place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York. Preliminary runs were held on May 11, with the finals on May 12, 2024.
Westminster reported that Nimble’s fastest clean championship round was 28.76 seconds. That performance earned the overall Masters Agility Championship, not merely a victory in Nimble’s height class. Nimble also won the 12-inch division and was named Westminster’s Top All-American Dog.

Westminster’s results page separately displays 29.19 seconds beside Nimble’s first-place 12-inch division result. The sources do not explain the difference between that display and the fastest clean championship-round time, so the two figures should be kept distinct.
The other 2024 height-division winners were:
- 8-inch: Lark
- 12-inch: Nimble
- 16-inch: Vanish
- 20-inch: Typo
- 24-inch: Hogan
Winning the 12-inch class and then taking the overall title is an important distinction. Nimble was not simply the best-performing dog in a smaller division; Nimble won the championship across the event’s divisions.
Why Nimble’s victory was historic
Westminster uses All-American Dog as its competition designation for a mixed-breed dog. It is not a standardized breed name. The Associated Press describes Nimble as a border collie-papillon mix; that reported mix is separate from Westminster’s official competition classification.
Westminster’s 2024 event release reported 351 agility competitors, including 26 All-American (mixed-breed) competitors. Fifty teams advanced to the championship round. These are event-specific figures reported by Westminster for the 2024 competition.

Mixed-breed dogs are eligible to compete alongside purpose-bred dogs in Westminster’s Masters Agility Championship. Nimble’s result was significant for two separate reasons:
- Nimble became the first All-American Dog to win Westminster’s overall Masters Agility Championship.
- Nimble became the first All-American Dog to win both the overall title and the Top All-American Dog award in the same Westminster competition.
Nimble was also the first dog from the 12-inch height division to win the overall Westminster agility championship. Together, those achievements made the 2024 result more than a memorable individual run: it showed that a mixed-breed competitor could reach the top of one of the sport’s highest-profile U.S. stages.
Who handled Nimble?
Nimble’s handler was Cynthia Hornor of Ellicott City, Maryland. In agility, the handler runs alongside the dog and signals where to go. The dog must interpret those signals while negotiating obstacles quickly and accurately.

What is the Westminster Masters Agility Championship?
Agility is a timed obstacle-course sport. The course can include jumps, tunnels, ramps, and other obstacles. Handlers run alongside dogs and direct them through the course; the competition rewards speed while penalizing errors.
The Westminster agility competition admits both purpose-bred and mixed-breed dogs. That makes it different from the event many casual viewers mean when they say “the Westminster dog show.”
Agility is not Westminster’s Best in Show competition
Nimble did not win Westminster’s conformation Best in Show title. The Masters Agility Championship and the conformation competition are separate events with different eligibility rules and judging goals.
Conformation evaluates how an eligible dog compares with its breed standard. Agility evaluates a team’s ability to complete a timed obstacle course accurately and efficiently. Westminster’s agility event provides a major competitive venue for mixed-breed dogs; that does not mean Nimble won the traditional Best in Show competition.
What happened at Westminster after 2024?
Nimble’s victory should be labeled as the 2024 Westminster agility championship, not the current title. Westminster’s historical records list Truant as the 2023 champion, Nimble in 2024, Vanish in 2025, and Prove-It in 2026.
What Nimble’s win does—and does not—prove
Nimble’s championship is compelling evidence that a mixed-breed dog can compete successfully at the highest level of a major agility event. It also highlights one advantage of agility as a spectator sport: performance is judged by what the dog-and-handler team does on the course, rather than by whether the dog belongs to a particular recognized breed.

But one championship does not prove that mixed-breed dogs are universally faster, more athletic, or better suited to agility than purebred dogs. Success depends on the individual dog’s health, temperament, motivation, training, physical abilities, and relationship with its handler. Dogs of many backgrounds can enjoy agility, but not every dog is suited to every obstacle or competition level.
What beginners need to start dog agility
Nimble’s performance may inspire owners to try agility at home, but advanced competition equipment and training should not be treated as casual backyard exercise. The safest starting point is a class or experienced instructor who can teach communication, foundation skills, warm-ups, obstacle introductions, and safe handling.
If you are looking for dog agility training equipment, begin with simple, adjustable items that let a novice dog learn gradually:
- A beginner-friendly tunnel with secure tunnel holders
- Weave poles used with appropriate spacing and progression
- Low jumps or adjustable hurdles
- A clear, level practice area with good footing
At-home equipment can be purchased or built from PVC, but homemade obstacles should follow applicable agility specifications and should not create sharp edges, unstable bases, or unsafe heights. Start with lowered equipment rather than full-size contact obstacles.
Contact obstacles such as a seesaw, dog walk, or A-frame require particular care. A dog can be injured by slipping, jumping from an unsuitable height, or using equipment that moves unexpectedly. Introduce these obstacles under experienced guidance instead of buying advanced equipment and asking a novice dog to attempt it immediately.
Training should be gradual and reward-based. Keep sessions short, stop before the dog becomes tired or frustrated, and ask a veterinarian about exercise suitability if the dog is growing, overweight, injured, or has a condition affecting its joints, spine, breathing, or coordination. Equipment is a practice aid—not a replacement for instruction.

Nimble’s 2024 championship helped make a simple point visible to a national audience: mixed-breed dogs have a place in serious organized dog sports. In agility, the relevant question is whether the team can communicate, perform the obstacles correctly, and complete the course safely and quickly.
