Has a Storm Ever Made Fish Fall From the Sky? Yes—but It Isn’t Really “Fish Rain”

Fish have been reported on the ground after storms, but that does not prove they fell from the sky. Waterspouts and updrafts are proposed explanations; the cause of Yoro’s reported “Rain of Fish” remains uncertain.

Fish have been reported on the ground after storms, but that does not prove they fell from the sky. Waterspouts and strong storm updrafts are proposed ways small animals might be moved, but the cause of Yoro, Honduras’s reported “Rain of Fish” remains uncertain.

“Fish rain” describes a report or tradition, not literal precipitation made of fish. To assess any case, separate what witnesses say they found from what anyone actually saw happen.

How could fish get into the air?

A waterspout is a whirling column of air and water mist over a body of water. NOAA distinguishes tornadic waterspouts, which are tornadoes that form over water or move from land to water, from fair-weather waterspouts, which usually develop beneath growing cumulus clouds and begin at the water surface.

A waterspout or another strong updraft is sometimes proposed as a way to lift and move small animals. That is a possible mechanism, not proof that a particular fish report was caused by one. NOAA notes that fair-weather waterspouts generally dissipate rapidly after reaching land and rarely travel far inland, a limitation to consider when evaluating claims about inland fish falls.

The Library of Congress also discusses strong updrafts as a proposed alternative explanation for animal rainfalls. These mechanisms do not establish what happened in any particular case.

Why small fish are discussed

Small animals are the focus of proposed lifting explanations because they are smaller than large animals. But finding small fish after a storm does not show that they were airborne. They may have been exposed or moved by flooding, runoff, or another local process.

For any report, the key questions are what process could have moved the fish, how far and across what terrain they would have had to travel, and whether anyone actually witnessed them falling.

What kinds of storms are involved?

Waterspouts are real weather phenomena, but their existence does not verify a fish-fall report. NOAA describes two broad categories:

Type What it is What it can tell us about a fish report
Fair-weather waterspout Usually develops beneath growing cumulus clouds, beginning at the water surface. It is a proposed mechanism for lifting or moving material, but NOAA says these waterspouts generally dissipate rapidly at landfall and rarely travel far inland.
Tornadic waterspout A tornado that forms over water or moves from land to water, associated with severe thunderstorms. Its presence could be relevant to a nearby report, but it does not by itself prove fish were lifted or where they came from.

The National Weather Service’s Gaylord, Michigan science page describes waterspout conditions in the Great Lakes region. Those regional details should not be treated as evidence for the cause of reports in Yoro or generalized to other locations.

What about Yoro’s “Rain of Fish”?

Yoro, Honduras, is associated with a tradition known as the Rain of Fish, or lluvia de peces. The tradition is culturally prominent, but it does not establish that fish literally fell from clouds or identify the cause of each reported occurrence.

El Heraldo reported that residents in La Unión, near Yoro, said they found fish after intense rain on June 8, 2024. Its report discusses waterspouts and a theory involving fish emerging from underground water as hypotheses, and says the exact cause is unknown. It is a record of local reports and proposed explanations, not a verified meteorological investigation.

A separate El Heraldo fact-check traced a video shared as footage of Yoro’s fish rain to Yasuj, Iran, in May 2024. The fact-check reported that the fish were brought to land by a tornado. This is a reminder to check where striking footage came from; a video of fish on a road after a storm does not prove that it was filmed in Yoro or that fish fell from clouds.

Could the fish have arrived another way?

Yes. Fish found after rain and fish witnessed falling from the sky are different claims. Possible explanations should be compared as hypotheses, not treated as established causes:

Proposed explanation What to examine Evidence limit
Waterspout or strong updraft Whether a relevant storm circulation was documented, and whether the proposed path and terrain make sense. A storm nearby does not prove it lifted fish.
Flooding or runoff Nearby streams, ponds, drainage channels, lowlands, or floodwater. Fish found after rain may have been displaced locally rather than airborne.
Underground water Whether there is evidence for the proposed local pathway. El Heraldo reported this as a hypothesis for Yoro, not an established explanation.
Other local causes Wind, birds, human activity, or a nearby fishpond or water source. These possibilities also need case-specific evidence.

What evidence would make a fish-fall report convincing?

A stronger case would distinguish a witnessed fall from fish discovered afterward and bring together independent evidence:

  1. Contemporaneous witnesses or video showing fish descending during the storm.
  2. Reliable documentation of a relevant waterspout, tornado, or strong updraft.
  3. A plausible source of the fish and a route consistent with the weather and terrain.
  4. Species identification that helps assess where the fish may have come from.
  5. Evidence that considers flooding, runoff, and other local explanations.
  6. For video reports, verification of the footage’s original location and date.

Even a well-documented storm and a discovery afterward do not necessarily show how each fish arrived. The cause of the Yoro reports remains unconfirmed in the reviewed reporting.

How far can fish be carried?

There is no verified, universal distance for fish transport in these reports. Any claim about distance depends on the proposed mechanism, weather, terrain, and evidence that fish were actually airborne. A report far from a possible source needs especially careful examination; distance alone does not confirm or rule out an explanation.

Are waterspouts dangerous?

Yes. NOAA describes tornadic waterspouts as associated with severe thunderstorms, and waterspouts can be hazardous. Do not approach one to look for falling fish or collect evidence. Follow official marine and severe-weather guidance and observe only from a safe distance.

The answer in one sentence

Fish have been reported on the ground after storms, but reports do not prove they fell from the sky; waterspouts and updrafts are proposed mechanisms, and the cause of Yoro’s reports remains uncertain.

FAQ

Can it rain fish?

“Fish rain” is a name for reports or traditions, not literal precipitation made of fish. Fish found after a storm do not by themselves show that they fell from the sky.

Can waterspouts pick up fish?

A waterspout is a proposed way small animals might be lifted or moved, but the reviewed sources do not establish that a waterspout caused the Yoro reports or any specific fish fall.

What is fish rain in Yoro, Honduras?

It is a longstanding local tradition and name for reports of fish found after rain. El Heraldo reported a 2024 account from residents near Yoro, but said the exact cause was not known.

Has the Rain of Fish in Yoro been scientifically proven?

The reviewed reporting does not establish a verified meteorological cause for the Yoro reports. Treat waterspouts and the underground-water idea as proposed explanations, not proven answers.

How can I check a video claiming to show fish rain?

Check its original source, date, and location rather than relying on its caption. El Heraldo’s fact-check found that a video attributed to Yoro was filmed in Yasuj, Iran, in May 2024.

Should I approach a waterspout?

No. Follow official weather guidance and keep a safe distance; do not approach one to investigate or collect evidence.
