Yes—cattle can eat fresh, sound pumpkins as a supplemental feed, provided they are free of mold, significant contamination, and non-edible chemical treatments. Keep hay, pasture, or other forage available; pumpkins are not a replacement for forage. Oklahoma State University gives an estimate of about 1% of body weight in pumpkin dry matter per day, but that is not a universal feeding prescription.

Which pumpkins can cattle eat?

Surplus field pumpkins, culls, and other sound pumpkins may be suitable. Their condition and treatment history matter more than their appearance.

Before feeding, inspect the pumpkins and confirm that they are:

  • Known, ordinary cultivated pumpkins;
  • Free of paint and other non-edible chemical treatments;
  • Free of mold, significant bacterial contamination, and substantial deterioration; and
  • Not mixed with garbage or other contaminants.

Alternative feeds can vary, so consider the source and condition of the pumpkins. Do not assume a pumpkin is safe just because cattle will eat it.

Be cautious with carved jack-o’-lanterns

Reject pumpkins with paint or other non-edible chemical treatments. Carved pumpkins and pumpkins left outside for extended periods can deteriorate quickly. If their treatment or condition is uncertain, do not feed them.

Do not feed moldy or deteriorated pumpkins

Do not feed moldy pumpkins or pumpkins with significant bacterial contamination. University of Illinois Extension warns that these can be dangerous. Also reject pumpkins that have substantially deteriorated.

How to prepare pumpkins for cattle

Cattle may eat ripe pumpkins readily. Freeze-thaw can soften firm pumpkins. If a pumpkin remains too firm, open it safely so cattle can reach the edible portion. Illinois Extension describes smashing pumpkins open or cutting them into chunks as options.

Use a method that does not introduce contaminants or leave pieces cattle cannot readily eat. Pumpkins can be:

  • Offered whole if ripe and accessible;
  • Smashed open; or
  • Cut into chunks.

How much pumpkin should cattle eat?

The amount depends on the animal and the complete ration. Oklahoma State University’s 2019 extension guidance estimates that cattle can consume about 1% of body weight in pumpkin dry matter per day. Its example for a 1,200-pound cow is 12 pounds of pumpkin dry matter, or about 80 pounds of fresh pumpkin at approximately 85% water.

That estimate is an extension guideline, not a universal maximum or an individualized ration formulation. Pumpkin moisture varies, and the appropriate amount depends on the rest of the diet and the cattle being fed.

Introduce pumpkins cautiously

  1. Offer a modest amount at first rather than a large quantity of an unfamiliar feed.
  2. Keep hay, pasture, or another suitable forage available.
  3. Watch intake, manure, appetite, and general behavior.
  4. Adjust the complete ration if pumpkins are displacing other feed.
  5. Stop feeding and contact a veterinarian if cattle become ill or show marked digestive upset.

Illinois Extension notes that pumpkin is not a routine feed for many livestock diets and may cause digestive upset. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal adaptation schedule.

Pumpkin nutrition: useful supplement, not complete feed

Pumpkins are high in moisture, so their wet weight can be misleading when estimating how much dry matter they provide.

Source Reported figures Basis or context
Cornell Cooperative Extension, reporting University of Nebraska–Lincoln guidance (2023) 83–88% moisture; 14–17% crude protein; 60–70% in-vitro digestibility Protein and digestibility are reported on a dry-matter basis
Oklahoma State University (2019) About 85% water; around 12–14% protein; around 70–75% total digestible nutrients Protein and total digestible nutrients are reported on a dry-matter basis

These are source-reported estimates, not a laboratory analysis of every pumpkin lot. Differences between the reported figures are a reason to avoid treating them as one universal nutrient profile.

Pumpkins can provide supplemental energy and other nutrients, but their value depends on the rest of the diet. They should supplement, not replace, grass, hay, pasture, or another suitable forage. At substantial inclusion, consider the complete ration and mineral balance. Delaware Cooperative Extension relays a Washington State University caution to monitor trace-mineral consumption when feeding large quantities because pumpkins are high in phosphorus.

Should cattle eat pumpkin seeds?

Cattle may consume seeds along with the pulp. Oklahoma State University notes that many seeds can pass through cattle undamaged and may produce volunteer pumpkin plants.

This does not establish pumpkin seeds as a deworming treatment. University of Illinois Extension cautions that pumpkin could be ineffective for that purpose. Do not substitute pumpkin seeds for an appropriate parasite-control program.

What about bitter pumpkins or volunteer squash?

The reviewed sources do not establish guidance for feeding unusually bitter or unidentified volunteer squash. If the plant identity or safety is uncertain, do not feed it; ask a veterinarian or local livestock nutrition professional for advice.

Do dairy and beef cattle use pumpkins differently?

The guidance summarized here supports treating pumpkins as a supplemental feed, not as a replacement for forage. It does not establish a universal inclusion amount for different cattle classes or a performance benefit specific to dairy or beef cattle.

For substantial feeding, consider the animal class and the complete ration, and consult a qualified livestock nutrition professional rather than relying on general pumpkin figures.

Storage and spoilage concerns

Pumpkins can deteriorate, particularly after carving or when left outside for extended periods. Inspect them before feeding and reject moldy, significantly contaminated, or deteriorated material. The reviewed sources do not provide a general storage method that guarantees pumpkins will remain safe.

When considering a large quantity, account for handling and whether the pumpkins can be used before they deteriorate. Compare their value with other feed on a dry-matter basis, rather than judging by wet weight alone.

When should you test pumpkins or the ration?

Feed analysis and ration review can be useful when pumpkins make up more than a minor supplement or when the feed source varies. Because pumpkins contain substantial water, wet-weight estimates alone do not show how much dry matter or nutrients the feed contributes.

For large-scale feeding or substantial ration changes, consult a feed laboratory or qualified local livestock nutrition professional. Consider mineral balance as well as energy, protein, and forage in the full diet.

Practical safety checklist

  • Identify: Use known, ordinary cultivated pumpkins.
  • Inspect: Reject moldy, significantly contaminated, or deteriorated fruit.
  • Check treatment: Do not feed pumpkins treated with paint or other non-edible chemicals.
  • Prepare: Soften firm pumpkins through freeze-thaw or open them safely so cattle can reach the edible portion.
  • Introduce cautiously: Start with a modest amount and monitor cattle; no universal adaptation schedule is established by the reviewed sources.
  • Protect the forage base: Keep hay, pasture, or another suitable forage available.
  • Review substantial inclusion: Consider the full ration and mineral balance, including the phosphorus caution.
  • Ask for help: Contact a veterinarian or livestock nutrition professional about illness, suspected contamination, or extensive feeding.

FAQ

Can cattle eat whole pumpkins?

Yes, if the pumpkins are sound and accessible. Ripe pumpkins may be eaten readily; firm ones may need to soften through freeze-thaw or be opened safely.

Can cattle eat pumpkin guts and seeds?

Cattle may eat the pulp and seeds of ordinary cultivated pumpkins. Seeds may pass through undigested, but they are not established as a reliable cattle dewormer.

Can cattle eat jack-o’-lanterns?

Do not feed pumpkins treated with paint or other non-edible chemicals. Carved pumpkins can deteriorate quickly, so reject those that are moldy, significantly contaminated, or deteriorated.

How many pumpkins can a cow eat?

There is no universal number because pumpkin moisture and animal rations vary. Oklahoma State University’s 2019 estimate is about 1% of body weight in pumpkin dry matter per day; its example for a 1,200-pound cow is about 80 pounds of fresh pumpkin at approximately 85% water. Treat this as an extension estimate, not a universal maximum or individual ration prescription.

Can pumpkins replace hay for cattle?

No. Pumpkins are a supplemental feed, not a replacement for grass, hay, pasture, or another suitable forage.

The Bottom Line

Feed cattle sound, untreated pumpkins as a supplement, not as a complete feed. Keep forage available, introduce pumpkins cautiously, reject moldy or significantly contaminated fruit, and review the complete ration if feeding a substantial quantity.
