You can help sea turtles by keeping litter and fishing gear out of the ocean, leaving nesting beaches dark and clear, and giving turtles space when you see them. If a turtle is injured, stranded, or entangled, contact trained local responders rather than touching or trying to rescue it.

These ten actions focus on sea turtles, as covered by the NOAA guidance used here. Freshwater and terrestrial turtles face different, location-specific issues; ask your local wildlife agency or a credible regional conservation group for advice about them.

Everyday choices that keep hazards out of the water

1. Keep plastic and litter out of waterways

Use less disposable plastic where practical, dispose of trash properly, and never release balloons outdoors. NOAA says turtles and other marine animals may eat or become entangled in ocean trash. Reuse a bottle or bag you already own if that works for you; buying a particular product is not required.

2. Dispose of fishing line and gear responsibly

Do not abandon hooks, fishing line, nets, or other gear. Use a designated fishing-line recycling collection point where available, and dispose of old gear through an appropriate local program. Lost or discarded gear can entangle turtles and other wildlife.

Beach habits that protect nesting turtles and hatchlings

3. Keep nesting beaches dark

Turn off, shield, or redirect lights visible from the beach, and follow local turtle-friendly lighting rules. Artificial beachfront light can disorient hatchlings trying to reach the sea and can discourage nesting females. Do not assume a particular bulb or lighting product meets local requirements.

4. Clear the beach at the end of the day

Take chairs, umbrellas, canopies, and other recreational equipment off the beach when you leave. Equipment left behind can obstruct turtles or become an entanglement hazard.

5. Fill holes and flatten sandcastles

Before leaving, fill holes and flatten sand structures. These obstacles can impede nesting turtles and hatchlings moving across the beach.

6. Do not drive on nesting beaches

Keep vehicles off nesting beaches. Vehicles can strike turtles, damage nests, deter nesting, and leave ruts that hinder hatchlings. Follow local rules and use designated access routes.

Do not touch, feed, surround, or disturb nesting turtles, nests, or hatchlings. If organized sea-turtle walks are available, they can offer a way to observe with guidance. On U.S. shores, sea turtles are protected by law; rules elsewhere vary, so check local requirements.

Boating and fishing practices

8. Slow down and give turtles room when boating

Watch for turtles, steer around them, and reduce speed in areas where they may be present. NOAA Fisheries advises boaters to put the engine in neutral when a turtle is within 50 yards. Do not approach a turtle to get a closer look.

9. Fish in ways that reduce accidental capture

Do not cast when a turtle is near and interested in bait or catch. NOAA recommends using barbless circle hooks and/or artificial bait, checking and watching your gear, disposing of bait and fish remains appropriately, and reporting accidental interactions to a local sea-turtle stranding network.

10. Ask how seafood was caught and report emergencies

Seafood choices can involve different fishing methods and risks; do not assume every fishery or product has the same impact. Ask how seafood was caught and consult NOAA FishWatch or another relevant fisheries information network.

If you see a stranded, injured, or entangled sea turtle, contact trained local responders. Do not handle, feed, treat, or attempt to disentangle the animal yourself. Response contacts depend on your location.

Why these actions matter

NOAA Ocean Service estimates that only one in 1,000 to one in 10,000 sea turtle hatchlings survive to adulthood. This is a NOAA estimate, not a universal survival rate for every species or location. NOAA Fisheries also identifies fishing-gear bycatch as a major threat to loggerhead sea turtles worldwide.

NOAA Fisheries puts the risk plainly: “Sea turtles and other creatures might eat or get entangled in trash in the ocean.” Small everyday choices can reduce exposure to debris, beach obstacles, and disturbance, but they are not a substitute for trained responders or broader conservation work.
