In cat-fancy terminology, gray is commonly called blue, and whether a particular breed can have blue fur with white markings depends on the registry’s current standard and, sometimes, where the white appears.
To choose a companion, compare an individual cat’s activity, sociability, coat, and grooming needs—not color alone. The breeds below are examples to research, not a definitive registry-approved list of 17 gray-and-white varieties; coat appearance cannot confirm pedigree.
What does gray and white mean in cats?
The International Cat Association (TICA) uses blue for the color many people call gray or grey. TICA explains that colors and patterns can occur with white, which the cat fancy calls particolors, but some pedigree breeds restrict where white markings may appear. Check a breed’s current standard before assuming a particular combination is accepted.
Two cats that look alike may have different pedigrees, and a gray-and-white coat alone does not establish breed. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) breed overview and TICA’s standards directory are useful starting points for learning about recognized breeds and their standards.

The title asks for 17 breeds, but there is no single list of 17 gray-and-white breeds established by the research for this article. How to choose the right companion
Compare activity and enrichment
Consider how much play, climbing, and interaction you can provide each day. CFA’s breed descriptions can help you compare broad profiles, but they do not predict exactly how an individual cat will behave. Meet the cat when possible and ask the breeder, shelter, or rescue about its observed activity and social preferences.
Match coat care to your routine
Look at coat length and texture, then ask what brushing routine is appropriate for that particular cat. A grooming brush may be useful, but the right tool and frequency depend on the coat; do not assume one breed’s care advice applies to every gray-and-white-looking cat. TICA’s grooming guidance for Bengals, for example, is specific to that breed and is not a universal rule for cats with similar coloring.

Verify color and pedigree claims
- Ask which registry and current breed standard the seller or breeder is using.
- Ask for the cat’s formal color and pattern description and whether the white placement is permitted for that breed.
- Request pedigree documentation if the cat is being represented as a pedigreed animal.
- Remember that a shelter or rescue may describe a cat by its visible coloring without knowing its pedigree.
FAQ
Is gray and white an official cat breed?
No. Gray-and-white describes coat appearance. TICA uses blue for what people commonly call gray, and white markings may be subject to breed-specific rules.
Can coat color prove a cat’s breed?
No. Similar coat colors and patterns can appear in cats with different pedigrees. Consult pedigree documentation and the relevant registry standard rather than relying on appearance alone.
