“Bream” is a regional, informal name for freshwater sunfish, not one universally agreed fish species. In some places it means bluegill; elsewhere it can include redear sunfish (shellcracker), warmouth, redbreast sunfish, spotted sunfish, and others. Bluegill and shellcracker are distinct species: bluegill mainly eat insects and larvae, while redear are known for eating snails and clams.
To identify a bream, compare its markings and body shape, then use habitat and local names as supporting clues. Names and fishing rules vary by location, so check your state wildlife agency when identification affects regulations or stocking.
What fish are considered bream?
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission describes “bream,” pronounced “brim,” as a convenient but vague term for a variety of sunfish. Some people use it for bluegill alone; others include several species. This is regional conversational usage, not a formal taxonomic group. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission: Bream.
Commonly included fish can include bluegill, redear sunfish, warmouth, redbreast sunfish, and spotted sunfish. That list is not universal. “Shellcracker” is a common name for redear sunfish (Lepomis microlophus), not a name for every bream.

Quick comparison of common bream
| Fish | Useful identification clues | Habitat or feeding clue | Regional name |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) | Deep-bodied; dark ear covering and dark blotch near the rear bottom edge of the dorsal fin | Common in lakes and ponds; eats mostly insects and larvae | Often the fish meant by “bream” |
| Redear sunfish (Lepomis microlophus) | Red mark on the rear edge of the gill cover in males; orange in females | Often deeper than bluegill, over hard bottoms; eats snails and clams | Shellcracker |
| Warmouth (Lepomis gulosus) | Heavy body, large mouth, mottled brown coloring, and reddish-brown streaks radiating from the eyes | Quiet waters including lakes, ponds, swamps, and vegetated stream areas | May be included in local bream usage |
| Redbreast sunfish (Lepomis auritus) | Use species-specific identification guidance; regional names can vary | More associated with rivers and backwaters than bluegill | Redbelly; sometimes river bream |
| Spotted sunfish (Lepomis punctatus) | Small sunfish; local names are not reliable on their own | Often found among roots at the water’s edge | Stumpknocker in Florida |
These are practical clues, not a substitute for a state fish-identification key. Do not assume that a local name or a single marking establishes a fish’s identity.
How to tell bluegill, shellcracker, and warmouth apart
Bluegill
Bluegill have a deep body, a dark ear covering, and a dark blotch near the rear bottom edge of the dorsal fin. They are well known in lakes and ponds and also occur in rivers, including areas below dams. Their diet consists mostly of insects and larvae. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission: Bluegill.
Redear sunfish or shellcracker
Look for a red mark on the rear edge of the gill cover in males and an orange mark in females. The name “shellcracker” reflects the redear’s use of snails as food; redear also eat clams. They favor hard bottoms and are often found in deeper water than bluegill. Their present distribution includes areas beyond their original southeastern range due to introductions, so do not assume every population is native. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission: Redear Sunfish and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department: Redear Sunfish.

Warmouth
Warmouth are heavy-bodied sunfish with a large mouth and mottled brown coloring. Reddish-brown streaks radiating from the eyes are another useful clue. They can be confused with rock bass; one distinguishing feature is the anal fin, which has three spines in warmouth and six in rock bass. Warmouth live in lakes, ponds, swamps, and quiet stream areas with muddy bottoms and vegetation. Adults eat insects, mollusks, and small fish. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department: Warmouth.

Habitat and diet differences
Habitat can help narrow an identification, but it does not prove a species. Bluegill are commonly associated with lakes and ponds, while Florida’s redbreast sunfish are more associated with rivers and backwaters. Redear are notable for eating snails and clams and for using hard-bottom areas; warmouth use quiet, vegetated waters.

- Warmouth: Uses quiet, often vegetated waters; adults eat insects, mollusks, and small fish.
- Redbreast: More associated with rivers and backwaters.
- Spotted sunfish: Often found near shoreline roots in Florida.
Fishing for bream
Fishing advice depends on the fish and location. For Florida bluegill, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recommends worms or crickets and describes small hooks and ultralight tackle as options. It also lists a small Beetle Spin-style lure. For Florida redear, earthworms are one recommended bait. These are local examples, not universal prescriptions; follow local rules for tackle and bait. - Check local regulations and identify the fish as carefully as you can before keeping it.
- Choose bait and tackle suited to the species and local guidance; worms or crickets are examples for bluegill, and earthworms are an option for redear.
- Use the fish’s likely habitat as a starting point: try lakes and ponds for bluegill, harder-bottom areas for redear, and quiet vegetated water for warmouth.
- If the fish’s markings do not fit a clear identification, consult a state fish key or wildlife agency rather than relying on a local nickname.
Names, regulations, and identification
Common names such as “bream,” “redbelly,” “stumpknocker,” and “shellcracker” vary by region. A name used for one fish in Florida may not be used the same way elsewhere. Distribution also needs local context: a fish found in a state may have been introduced rather than native there.
Regulations can group fish differently from everyday speech. Florida, for example, groups several fish under a statewide panfish limit; that is not a universal rule. Check the regulations for the place you are fishing before keeping fish. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission: General Statewide Bag and Length Limits.
