Some can survive drying by entering a dormant state called anhydrobiosis, but survival depends on the species, its condition, and the stress and exposure tested. They are not indestructible, and surviving a space-exposure experiment does not mean they can live or thrive in space.
Here are answers to common questions about tardigrades, their habitats, their survival strategies, NASA research, and how to look for them.
At a glance: survival depends on conditions
| Question | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Can some tardigrades survive drying? | Yes. Some enter anhydrobiosis, a dormant survival state, and may recover when rehydrated. |
| Can they survive space exposure? | NASA’s summary of one experiment reports survival of desiccated animals after vacuum and cosmic-radiation exposure; unfiltered solar radiation strongly reduced survival. |
| Are they indestructible? | No. Outcomes vary by species, state, stress type, and exposure conditions. |
What are tardigrades, and why are they called water bears?
Tardigrades are microscopic animals in the phylum Tardigrada. They have four pairs of short legs and are commonly called water bears because their appearance and slow gait can look bear-like under magnification. The nickname does not mean they are related to bears.
How small are tardigrades?
Tardigrades are microscopic. The National Science Foundation describes them as less than half a millimeter long, so a microscope is a practical tool for observing them. Their size varies among species and life stages.

Where do tardigrades live?
Tardigrades occur in marine and freshwater habitats as well as damp terrestrial environments. Some live in moss, while others occur in freshwater or lake sediment. Habitat differs among species; moss is not home to every tardigrade.
What do tardigrades eat?
Diet varies among species. Tardigrades may feed on bacteria or plant life, among other food sources. Do not assume that every species eats the same thing or that moss itself is always the food: moss may be habitat as well.
Can you see tardigrades without a microscope?
They are microscopic, so a microscope is the practical way to observe them. The National Science Foundation’s size description—less than half a millimeter—supports using a microscope, but the research does not establish a particular model or magnification.
What is cryptobiosis?
Cryptobiosis is a dormant state in which an animal’s activity and metabolism become extremely low in response to unfavorable conditions. It is a survival state, not normal active life without water. Different forms are associated with different stresses, and the response varies among tardigrades.

What are anhydrobiosis and a tun?
Anhydrobiosis is a form of cryptobiosis associated with drying. In many terrestrial tardigrades, the animal contracts into a compact form called a tun. A tun is a temporary state, not a separate species or a guarantee of recovery.
How do tardigrades survive drying, and what happens when water returns?
Some tardigrades survive severe water loss by entering anhydrobiosis. When water returns, an individual that remains viable may resume activity, but recovery is not guaranteed. It depends on the animal and the conditions of drying, storage, and rehydration. Researchers continue to investigate the mechanisms; there is no single explanation established here for every species.
Can tardigrades survive freezing, heat, or pressure?
Some tardigrades tolerate particular extreme conditions, but there is no universal tolerance that applies to all species or states. Active and dormant animals may respond differently, and the type, duration, and circumstances of exposure matter. Avoid treating a result from one experiment as proof that tardigrades survive every freeze, high temperature, or pressure.
Can tardigrades survive radiation?
Some tardigrades have survived particular radiation exposures in experiments, but radiation tolerance is not immunity. The NASA space-exposure summary reports survival of desiccated tardigrades after exposure to cosmic radiation in that experiment, while unfiltered solar radiation strongly reduced survival. These results should remain tied to the tested animals and conditions.

Can tardigrades survive in outer space?
Some desiccated tardigrades survived defined exposures involving the vacuum of space and cosmic radiation in an experiment summarized by NASA. Unfiltered solar radiation strongly reduced survival, though some individuals survived combined exposure. This does not show that active, hydrated tardigrades can live in space, or that tardigrades survive every space environment.
How can a tardigrade survive space if it needs water?
Active tardigrades need water for normal life. The space-exposure result concerns desiccated animals in a dormant state, not animals actively living and feeding in a vacuum. Survival after a defined exposure is different from thriving or reproducing in space.
Are tardigrades immortal, or can they survive for decades?
No. Tardigrades can die, and cryptobiosis does not guarantee indefinite survival. Do not treat a claimed maximum duration in a dry state as a normal lifespan or a universal result: the research reviewed for this article does not establish a reliable duration that applies across tardigrades.
Why do tardigrades enter cryptobiosis?
Cryptobiosis is associated with surviving unfavorable conditions such as drying. The research reviewed here does not establish a definitive evolutionary explanation for why the ability evolved, so its ultimate origin remains an open question.
How does NASA study tardigrades?
NASA’s Cell Science-04 investigation uses Hypsibius exemplaris as a model organism to study genes and multigenerational responses to stress in space. NASA’s mission description says cultures were maintained for up to four generations; that is a detail of the mission, not a general lifespan claim. Researchers aim to understand how tardigrades respond to spaceflight-related stress, not to show that they are indestructible or to promise a specific medical application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can I find and observe tardigrades myself?
You can try examining a small sample from a likely habitat such as damp moss, but a sample is not guaranteed to contain tardigrades. A compound microscope is a suitable category-level tool; the research does not establish a particular model or magnification. Collect only where permitted and avoid assuming that every moving speck is a tardigrade.
- Choose a small sample from a likely habitat, such as damp moss, where collection is permitted.
- Place the sample in a clean container and add water to rehydrate it.
- Prepare a wet mount using a slide and coverslip, taking care not to press hard on the coverslip.
- Inspect the sample patiently with a microscope. Record where and how you collected it, and describe what you observe cautiously rather than assigning a species name based on appearance alone.
FAQ
Do all tardigrades live in moss?
No. Tardigrades occupy marine, freshwater, and terrestrial habitats. Some live in moss, but habitat varies among species.
Does surviving space exposure mean tardigrades can live in space?
No. The NASA experiment involved desiccated animals exposed to defined conditions. It is not evidence that active tardigrades can live or thrive in space.
Best Value
Does every dried tardigrade revive when water returns?
No. Recovery is conditional; some animals may resume activity, but survival and recovery depend on the animal and the conditions of drying, storage, and rehydration.
Can I identify a tardigrade species just by looking at it?
Do not assume so. A beginner can observe and document an animal, but this article’s sources do not establish that visual inspection alone is enough for species identification.
The bottom line
Tardigrades are microscopic animals whose survival abilities depend on species and circumstances. Some can enter anhydrobiosis and survive particular drying or space-exposure conditions, but dormant survival is not active life without water, and no experiment makes them indestructible.
