What is coming out of a turtle’s cloaca is usually a male turtle’s single penis, or phallus, briefly everted through the vent. It is not a pair of hemipenes, and a brief exposure may retract on its own; tissue that stays out, appears injured or swollen, or accompanies signs of illness needs prompt veterinary attention.
The cloaca is the shared chamber where digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts empty, and the vent is its external opening beneath the tail. Do not touch or try to push exposed tissue back in. Contact a veterinarian experienced with reptiles if it does not retract or looks abnormal.
Do male turtles have penises?
Yes. Male turtles have a single midline intromittent organ, commonly called a penis or phallus, housed in the cloacal region. It transfers sperm during mating. Snakes and many lizards, by contrast, have paired hemipenes.
“Coming out of the tail” is a common shorthand, but the organ exits through the vent beneath the tail. Turtle anatomy differs from mammalian anatomy; that difference does not make either arrangement more or less advanced.

The cloaca: the opening that causes much of the confusion
The cloaca is a shared chamber for the digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. The vent is the external opening. The turtle’s penis is normally retracted in the cloacal region and can be everted through the vent.
Its shape and associated folds vary among species. A striking feature shown in one turtle image should not be assumed to appear in every turtle.
What the visible structure looks like
The exposed end is commonly called the glans. Its shape and folds vary among turtle groups and species. The organ contains erectile tissue and can change in appearance when everted. The available research does not establish one general size or measurement that applies to all male turtles.
Some descriptions discuss a sperm-conducting groove, but anatomy and terminology vary. Avoid assuming that a diagram or detailed account of one species applies exactly to a pet slider, tortoise, or other turtle.
Is it a hemipenis?
No. Snakes and many lizards have paired hemipenes. A male turtle has one median penis or phallus. Calling it a hemipenis because turtles are reptiles is inaccurate.
There is no single “turtle penis”
Turtle reproductive anatomy varies. The table summarizes the distinctions useful to readers without implying that every species has the same appearance.
| Question | General answer | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| How many organs? | One median penis or phallus in male turtles | Snakes and many lizards have paired hemipenes |
| Where is it housed? | In the cloacal region; it exits through the vent | The vent is beneath the tail, not an opening in the tail itself |
| Does it look the same across turtles? | No; glans shape and folds vary | Do not treat one species’ anatomy as universal |
Why might a turtle expose it?
A male’s penis may be visible temporarily when he is stressed or behaving sexually, and it should retract. The appearance alone cannot establish the cause. Persistent exposure may indicate a prolapse or another problem, not ordinary behavior.
Tail length and cloacal position can help identify sex in some turtles, but they depend on species, size, and maturity. Use these clues together and cautiously; they are not a universal rule for every turtle or age.

What to do if you see a turtle’s penis outside its body
For a pet turtle, do not manipulate exposed tissue. Persistent prolapse can become traumatized, swollen, or bitten. VCA Animal Hospitals warns: “Any prolapsed tissue represents a potentially life-threatening problem that should be seen by a veterinarian immediately.”
Rank #4
- Do not pull, push, pinch, wipe, or attempt to replace the tissue.
- Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian promptly if it remains outside, looks injured or swollen, or the turtle is straining or unwell.
- Do not apply creams, disinfectants, oils, or home remedies unless a veterinarian instructs you to do so.
A photo cannot reliably distinguish temporary eversion from a prolapse or another medical problem. If in doubt, get veterinary advice promptly.

Do female turtles have the same organ?
No. The eversible penis is a male reproductive organ. Females have a cloaca and reproductive tract, but not the same penis. External sex differences can be difficult to identify in immature turtles.
Best Value
Can a turtle’s penis be mistaken for a prolapse?
Yes. Temporary eversion may retract, but tissue that stays exposed can be a serious problem. Do not try to diagnose or replace it yourself; contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian promptly.
Do turtles have two penises like snakes?
No. Male turtles generally have one median penis or phallus. Snakes and many lizards have paired hemipenes.
Can tail length tell me whether my young turtle is male?
Not reliably on its own. Tail and vent characteristics vary with species and maturity. Use them cautiously and together, rather than as a universal rule.
The Bottom Line
The visible structure is usually a male turtle’s single penis or phallus, briefly everted through the vent from the cloacal region. Its appearance varies by species, and not every protrusion is harmless: do not touch or push it back in, and seek prompt veterinary care if it remains exposed or looks injured or swollen.
