If your dog may have eaten Tylenol (acetaminophen), contact a veterinarian or animal poison center immediately, even if your dog looks normal. If your dog is showing distress, go to an emergency veterinary clinic. Bring the medication packaging and do not induce vomiting or give activated charcoal unless a veterinarian directs you to.

Is acetaminophen safe for dogs?

Acetaminophen, also called paracetamol or APAP, is not a routine home pain medicine for dogs. Accidental ingestion or an owner-administered dose can cause serious poisoning, including liver injury and damage to red blood cells.

A veterinarian may prescribe acetaminophen in specific circumstances, but only under veterinary direction. Do not give it to your dog unless your veterinarian has provided instructions for that dog.

If your dog may have swallowed acetaminophen, act now

  1. Remove the medicine from your dog’s reach and keep the packaging.
  2. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison center immediately. Do this even if your dog appears normal.
  3. Go to an emergency veterinary clinic if your dog is showing distress. Call ahead if possible, but do not delay transport.
  4. Follow professional instructions. Do not induce vomiting or give activated charcoal, food, milk, or another medicine unless a veterinary professional directs you to.

Have this information ready when you call:

  • your dog’s age, weight, and breed;
  • the product name, strength, and all active ingredients;
  • the estimated amount swallowed and when it happened;
  • any symptoms, current medicines, and relevant health history.

If your dog vomited, tell the veterinary team whether pills were visible and, if feasible, preserve the material for them.

Why acetaminophen is dangerous

Acetaminophen poisoning can injure the liver and blood. Liver injury may become apparent after a delay, so a normal appearance immediately after ingestion does not establish that your dog is safe.

Reported signs include vomiting, reduced appetite, lethargy, abdominal pain, weakness, trembling, fast heart rate or breathing, facial or paw swelling, abnormal gum color, and jaundice. The type and severity of signs can vary.

How much acetaminophen is toxic to a dog?

There is no home dose threshold owners should use to decide that an ingestion is safe. Risk depends on the dose, whether exposure was repeated, the product, and the dog’s condition. Contact a veterinary professional promptly for any suspected ingestion.

Merck Veterinary Manual reports that acute clinical signs in dogs are generally not observed unless exposure exceeds 100 mg/kg, and methemoglobinemia signs have been reported above 200 mg/kg. These are clinical reference observations, not safe home triage cutoffs. Repeated exposure can cause toxicosis at lower doses (Merck Veterinary Manual, last updated 2025).

Symptoms of acetaminophen poisoning in dogs

Signs can be delayed, particularly liver injury. Do not wait for symptoms before contacting a veterinarian or animal poison center.

Possible signs

  • vomiting or reduced appetite;
  • lethargy, weakness, or trembling;
  • abdominal pain;
  • fast heart rate or breathing;
  • facial or paw swelling;
  • abnormal gum color;
  • jaundice, or yellowing of the eyes or gums.

If your dog is visibly distressed, seek emergency veterinary care.

What not to do at home

Do not induce vomiting unless instructed

Do not try to make your dog vomit unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to. The appropriate response depends on the dog’s condition and exposure.

Do not give activated charcoal on your own

A veterinary team may administer charcoal in selected cases. Improper administration can cause aspiration into the lungs and dangerous sodium changes (VCA Animal Hospitals).

Do not give another medicine

Do not give another human medicine or a leftover veterinary drug to counteract the exposure. Contact a veterinary professional for instructions.

How veterinarians treat acetaminophen poisoning

Treatment depends on the exposure details and the dog’s condition. A veterinary team may consider early decontamination, medically administered activated charcoal, N-acetylcysteine, fluids and other supportive care, hospitalization, and blood and liver monitoring. Merck Veterinary Manual describes treatment objectives as early decontamination, prevention or treatment of methemoglobinemia and liver damage, and supportive care.

Follow-up care and monitoring may be needed. Follow the veterinary team’s instructions after treatment.

What is the prognosis?

Recovery is possible, particularly with early treatment, but an individual outcome cannot be promised. The amount consumed and time to treatment affect prognosis. Delayed or untreated poisoning may result in liver damage or other serious effects.

What if the product was a cold, flu, allergy, or combination medicine?

Tell the veterinary professional every active ingredient on the label. Combination products may contain other drugs, so the risk cannot be assessed from the brand or front-label purpose alone. Bring the original package or a photograph of its label if possible.

Preventing access to medicines

Keep medicines out of pets’ reach, including tablets in bags, bedside containers, and open bottles. A lockable medicine storage box can help prevent access, but it is not a treatment for an ingestion.
