Cats knead because the behavior begins in kittenhood, when kittens press their paws against their mother while nursing to stimulate milk production. Many cats continue kneading as adults; it may be associated with comfort, settling into bedding, or scent marking. These explanations can overlap, and there is no single established reason for every adult cat’s kneading.
Kneading a blanket, bed, or person is generally normal. The behavior alone does not prove that a cat is happy, in pain, hungry, or communicating one specific message; consider the setting and the cat’s overall behavior.
What is kneading?
Kneading is the rhythmic pressing of paws into a soft surface, often with alternating paws. Many people call it “making biscuits” because the motion resembles pressing dough.
A cat may knead a blanket, rug, sofa, bed, clothing, your lap, or another soft surface. Some cats purr while doing it; others knead quietly before settling down. Claws may extend during the movement, which can be uncomfortable for people or rough on fabric.

The main reasons cats knead
1. It began as a nursing behavior
Kittens press their paws against their mother while nursing, which stimulates milk production. The motion happens in a context of feeding and maternal contact.
Many sources suggest that adult kneading may retain an association with the comfort of nursing. This is a plausible explanation, not a proven account of every adult cat’s behavior.
2. It may be associated with comfort
Some cats knead while settling down on a soft surface or relaxing with a familiar person. The nursing association may help explain why people interpret the behavior as comforting or affectionate, but kneading alone does not establish a cat’s emotional state.
3. It may help a cat settle into bedding
Cats may knead bedding or other soft material as they settle. One proposed explanation is that the behavior carries over from wild felines preparing soft bedding. This is a possible explanation, not a demonstrated purpose for every instance.
4. It may accompany contact with a person
A cat kneading your lap may be settling on a comfortable, familiar surface. The behavior’s association with nursing may also help explain why owners see it as affectionate. It is not proof of one specific emotion or intention.

5. Paw scent may play a role
Cats have scent glands around their paws. Kneading may transfer scent to a surface or person, but this is a possible function rather than a confirmed intention in any particular instance.
6. Stretching or tension relief are additional theories
Stretching and tension relief have been suggested as additional explanations for kneading. They are theories, not established causes.
Why does my cat knead me?
Your cat may be settling on a comfortable, familiar lap. The nursing association may also help explain why people interpret kneading as affectionate, and paw scent transfer is another possible explanation. No single interpretation is certain from the behavior alone.
If the claws hurt, place a blanket over your lap or offer a soft blanket as an alternative surface. These are practical ways to make kneading more comfortable, not treatments for a problem.
Is kneading always a sign that a cat is happy?
No. Kneading is normal behavior, but it does not have one confirmed meaning in every situation. It may be associated with comfort, settling into bedding, or scent marking. Consider the context and your cat’s overall behavior rather than treating paw movement as a complete emotional or medical diagnosis.

What to do if kneading hurts or damages furniture
Let harmless kneading continue
There is usually no reason to stop ordinary kneading when the surface is safe and nobody is being injured. Kneading is normal behavior.
Provide a designated surface
Place a soft, washable blanket or cat bed where your cat likes to knead. A dedicated blanket can give your cat a preferred surface and help protect household textiles. You can also place a blanket over your lap to reduce discomfort from claws.
Redirect gently
If your cat is kneading an unsuitable surface, place the blanket or bed nearby and allow the cat to choose it. Avoid forcing the cat onto a surface.
When should a veterinarian evaluate kneading?
Kneading is generally normal, and kneading alone does not establish that a cat is ill or anxious. If the behavior changes noticeably—for example, if it increases substantially—raise the change with your veterinarian, especially if you have other concerns about your cat’s behavior or well-being.
Common kneading myths

The Bottom Line
Kneading is a normal behavior that begins with nursing in kittenhood. Adult cats may knead in association with comfort, settling into bedding, or scent marking, but no single explanation applies to every cat. Offer a soft blanket if claws or fabric are a concern, and ask your veterinarian about a noticeable change in the behavior.
