Blackstone’s acquisition of Rover closed on February 27, 2024, taking the pet-care marketplace private in a deal announced at approximately $2.3 billion, or $11 per share. Rover announced in June 2025 that Brent Turner would become CEO on July 1, with co-founder Aaron Easterly moving to Executive Chair. Through the latest milestone covered by the research, Rover’s expansion included the Cat in a Flat and Gudog acquisitions, launches in Denmark and Ireland, and the completed acquisition of Australia’s Mad Paws in November 2025.

These developments show expansion through both acquisitions and new-market launches. Company announcements describe the intended growth rationale, but do not prove that Blackstone’s ownership caused the moves or that customers have experienced better prices or service.

The Blackstone deal was announced in 2023 and closed in 2024

On November 29, 2023, Blackstone announced a definitive agreement to acquire Rover in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $2.3 billion. Blackstone said the offer was $11 per share, a 61% premium to Rover’s 90-trading-day volume-weighted average share price through November 28, 2023.

Blackstone announced that the acquisition closed on February 27, 2024. Rover’s shares ceased trading and were to be delisted from Nasdaq. Rover’s SEC filing described the company as a wholly owned subsidiary and reported approximately $2.35 billion in total consideration payable to equityholders.

Date Milestone
November 29, 2023 Blackstone announced the proposed acquisition at $11 per share in cash.
February 27, 2024 Blackstone announced that the acquisition had closed; Rover became private and its shares ceased trading.

Why the deal is described as both $2.3 billion and $2.35 billion

Blackstone described the announced transaction value as approximately $2.3 billion. Rover’s SEC filing reported approximately $2.35 billion in total consideration payable to equityholders. These are different descriptions of the deal, not necessarily conflicting figures.

What Rover does

Rover is an online marketplace connecting pet parents with local care providers. Its announced service categories included overnight boarding and in-home sitting, as well as doggy daycare, dog walking and drop-in visits. The platform supports provider discovery, booking, payment, rebooking and reviews.

At the time of the 2023 deal announcement, Rover reported that more than 4 million pet parents had booked more than 93 million services since the company began, and that more than 1 million care providers had been paid across North America and Europe. Those are company-reported figures through September 30, 2023, not current totals.

Brent Turner was named CEO in 2025

On June 12, 2025, Rover announced that Brent Turner would become CEO effective July 1. Turner had served as Rover’s President and COO and joined its leadership team in 2014. Co-founder Aaron Easterly, CEO since 2011 according to Rover’s succession announcement, was to become Executive Chair.

Rover’s June 2025 announcement said Turner had helped lead the company’s growth from 115,000 annual bookings in 2014 to 7.2 million in 2025, and its expansion from a U.S.-only company to operations in 16 countries. Turner also said Rover had over $1 billion in annual sales at that time. These are figures and descriptions reported by Rover in the succession announcement; they should not be treated as independently verified or as current figures beyond that date.

Expansion through acquisitions and market launches

Rover’s documented expansion included acquisitions as well as launches into new countries. The company described geographic growth and acquisitions as part of its strategy. The announcements establish the transactions and stated rationale, but do not show that Blackstone’s acquisition alone caused them.

Gudog and European expansion

On April 29, 2025, Rover announced the Gudog acquisition and launches in Denmark and Ireland. Rover said Gudog had 20,000 dog sitters and walkers across eight European countries. Rover also reported that European bookings represented roughly 16% of its global new bookings in 2024. These are company-reported figures from the announcement, not independently verified results. Further country entries were described as plans, so they should not be presented as completed launches.

Mad Paws and Australia

Rover announced a proposed Mad Paws acquisition in July 2025 and announced its completion on November 11, 2025, describing the move as entry into Australia. In its July announcement, Rover reported that Mad Paws had over 300,000 active pet parents, 70,000 registered providers and over 400,000 transactions in 2024. These figures were attributed to Rover and are not independent verification.

What the expansion shows—and what it does not

The announcements point to two approaches: adding established marketplaces, including cat-care specialists, and launching Rover in additional countries. Rover’s stated rationale includes geographic growth and investment in its marketplace. Acquisitions may bring existing customers and providers, while launches extend the company’s own marketplace into new markets; the announcements do not establish the results of either approach.

The available research does not establish that Blackstone’s ownership caused particular expansion decisions or improved customer prices, service quality or profitability. Nor does the reviewed material provide a complete, current financial picture comparable to Rover’s former public-company reporting. The latest milestone covered here is the November 2025 Mad Paws completion announcement; this research does not establish whether Rover made further changes in 2026.

What this means for pet parents

Rover is a marketplace, so service availability depends on location and local providers. An acquisition or country launch does not guarantee a particular service in every city. When evaluating care, focus on the provider and service available where you live, rather than assuming company-wide expansion ensures local coverage.
