The Berger Picard is an athletic French herding dog for owners who want an intelligent, active, involved companion—not a low-maintenance dog that simply fits into the background. Picards can be affectionate with their families, but they are also independent, alert, and sometimes reserved with strangers. Plan on daily exercise, mental engagement, positive training, early socialization, and seasonal coat care.

What is a Berger Picard?
The Berger Picard is an ancient French sheepdog developed by farmers and sheep herders in Picardy, northern France. The American Kennel Club describes it as a medium-sized, sturdy, well-muscled dog built for efficient, sustained work. The AKC standard places it in the herding-dog tradition; a breed standard describes type, not a guarantee that every individual dog will look or behave identically.
Although its shaggy outline can make it look like a casual companion breed, the Picard is fundamentally a working shepherd. It was bred to be alert and capable of independent problem-solving. That history helps explain both its intelligence and its independent streak.
The AKC standard lists fawn and brindle as standard coat colors. The official standard describes naturally erect ears, a body slightly longer than its height at the withers, and free, efficient movement.

Appearance and coat
A Berger Picard is medium-sized, sturdy, athletic, and well-muscled without looking heavy. Its body is slightly longer than its height at the withers. Naturally erect ears and a rugged expression give it a particularly recognizable face. Movement should be free and efficient rather than cumbersome.
The coat is one of the breed’s defining features. The AKC standard describes it as harsh and crisp, often slightly wavy, with a short, dense, soft undercoat. It should retain a natural, rustic appearance rather than being sculpted or shaped.
Does a Berger Picard shed or smell?
Picards shed, with extra brushing needed during seasonal shedding. The sources reviewed describe grooming as limited, but do not establish that every dog is odor-free. As with any dog, dirt, wet weather, skin or dental problems, and infrequent bathing can affect smell.
The coat is not hypoallergenic, and no dog should be presented as completely allergy-free.
Berger Picard grooming routine
- Brush about once a month outside shedding season, as the AKC breed profile advises.
- Brush more often during shedding season; the AKC says daily or every-other-day brushing with a rake and slicker brush can help remove loose hair. A slicker brush or coat rake is an optional tool, not a requirement for every dog.
- Keep the coat natural. The breed standard says it should not be sculpted, shaped, or scissored for presentation.
- Bathe occasionally as needed and trim nails regularly.
- Check and maintain ears, teeth, and paw hair as appropriate.
The coat’s relative ease is one of the Berger Picard’s appealing traits, but it should not obscure the breed’s more demanding behavioral and exercise needs.
Berger Picard temperament
The official standard describes Picards as “lively and alert, observant, quietly confident, and can be aloof with strangers, but should not be timid or nervous.” A well-socialized Picard can be an affectionate companion, but breed descriptions are tendencies, not guarantees about an individual dog.
Picards were bred to think and work independently. Individual dogs may be free-thinking, reserved with unfamiliar people, or quick to alert their families to activity around the home. Early socialization and consistent, positive training help owners channel that independence.
The breed is also sensitive. Harsh handling, intimidation, or inconsistent punishment can undermine learning. At the other extreme, permissiveness can allow nuisance barking, jumping, chasing, poor leash behavior, or rowdy play to become established habits.

Are Berger Picards good with children?
They can be devoted family companions in an active home prepared for training, regular exercise, and socialization. The sources reviewed do not establish a universal child-compatibility guarantee; the match depends on the individual dog and household.
Children should be taught not to climb on, corner, chase, disturb while eating, or handle a dog roughly. Adults should supervise interactions, especially with young children, and provide the dog with a quiet place where it can retreat undisturbed.
What about strangers, cats, and other dogs?
Some Picards are sociable, while others are more reserved or watchful with strangers. Early, gradual, positive exposure can support confidence and social skills, but does not guarantee that every adult will welcome every person or animal.
Introductions to cats and other dogs should be managed individually. Use barriers, leashes, rewards, and gradual exposure rather than assuming that early friendliness will predict every adult interaction. A secure fence and careful off-leash management are sensible because an independent herding dog may follow movement or ignore a recall when something more interesting appears.

Exercise and enrichment needs
A Berger Picard needs daily exercise and mental stimulation. The AKC recommends at least one long walk each day and lists hiking, biking, swimming, and fetch as possible outlets. The right activities and intensity depend on age, health, weather, conditioning, and the individual dog.
Physical exercise alone is usually not enough. A Picard’s working mind also needs useful outlets:
- Sniffing walks and structured opportunities to investigate.
- Retrieving and interactive play.
- Short trick-training sessions.
- Agility, tracking, obedience, flyball, rally, or herding activities where suitable and safely available.
- Food puzzles, supervised problem-solving toys, and toy-based training.
Because some Picards are not strongly food-motivated, vary the reward. Praise, play, toys, access to sniffing, and brief training games may work better than relying on treats for every behavior. For suitable dogs, an interactive puzzle toy or durable tug toy for training can provide enrichment and reinforcement. Inspect toys regularly, choose an appropriate size and construction, and supervise use.
An under-exercised or under-stimulated Picard may become destructive or rowdy. The solution is not simply to exhaust the dog with ever-longer physical workouts; a balanced routine should also teach calmness, settling, and independent relaxation.

Puppies need care not to be overexercised while developing. The Berger Picard Club of America flyer offers a “5 minutes of exercise for each month of life” rule of thumb followed by rest, twice daily, but this is club guidance—not a universally validated veterinary standard. Discuss an individual puppy’s exercise with your veterinarian and avoid pushing a puppy into repetitive, high-impact activity.
Training a Berger Picard
Start training early. A fair, consistent, upbeat, varied approach can help channel the breed’s intelligence and independence. Picards may question repetitive exercises or decide another option is more rewarding; intelligence does not mean automatic obedience.
- Keep sessions short enough to maintain engagement.
- Change exercises before the dog becomes bored.
- Reward the behavior you want promptly and clearly.
- Use food, toys, praise, play, and real-life rewards according to the individual dog.
- Set predictable household rules and apply them consistently.
- Avoid harsh corrections, intimidation, and physical punishment.
Priority skills include recall, loose-leash walking, calm greetings, settling on a mat, polite handling, cooperative nail and ear care, and the ability to spend short periods alone. Recall deserves special attention because an athletic, independent dog should not be trusted off leash merely because it responds well in a fenced yard.
If you have not trained a sensitive, independent working breed before, arrange help from an experienced positive-reinforcement puppy class or experienced dog trainer. Verify the provider’s methods, qualifications, location, and availability before enrolling. Avoid trainers who rely on fear, pain, dominance claims, or guarantees of instant obedience.
For recall practice in an open but controlled area, a long-line leash for recall practice can provide distance while maintaining a physical safety connection. It is not a substitute for secure fencing, supervision, or training, and it should be used where the line cannot snag people, dogs, vehicles, or vegetation.
Health and veterinary care
The Berger Picard is described by its breed club as appearing fairly healthy, while health concerns continue to be monitored. The club’s health statement and recommendations may change, so check current guidance when evaluating a litter. The AKC lists a life expectancy of 12–13 years; this is a breed-profile estimate, not a guarantee for an individual dog.
Routine veterinary care still matters: examinations, region- and lifestyle-appropriate vaccination and parasite prevention, dental care, weight management, nail care, and prompt evaluation of changes in gait, vision, digestion, energy, or behavior.

- Hip dysplasia evaluation through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) or PennHIP.
- An eye examination by a board-certified American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) ophthalmologist beginning at a minimum age of 24 months, repeated annually.
- Participation in the OFA/CHIC DNA repository.
- One health elective: an OFA congenital cardiac examination, elbow dysplasia evaluation, thyroid evaluation from an approved laboratory, or advanced cardiac examination.
These recommendations come from the BPCA health statement. Requirements and recommendations can change, so buyers should confirm current guidance with the breed club and OFA and review public health records.
What a CHIC number does—and does not—mean
A CHIC number means that the required breed-specific tests were completed and that the results were made publicly available. It does not by itself mean that every result was normal. Ask for the registered names of both parents, inspect their actual OFA results, and review findings with your veterinarian or a knowledgeable canine genetics professional.
Anesthesia warning
The Berger Picard breed club’s health statement reports anecdotal severe anesthesia reactions, including deaths, and advises communicating this information to the treating veterinarian. These are reported cases and a breed-club recommendation, not proof that every Picard has an established anesthesia disorder.
Before any procedure, give the veterinary team the dog’s complete medical history, including previous anesthetic events, reactions, medications, and supplements. Ask the veterinarian to create an individualized anesthetic and monitoring plan. Do not delay necessary care or attempt to choose anesthetic drugs without veterinary guidance.
Feeding and everyday care
Feed a complete and balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage, body condition, activity, and medical needs. Measure meals rather than estimating by eye, include treats in the daily calorie budget, and adjust portions as activity changes.
An active Picard may need more energy than a sedentary dog, but an athletic outline is not a reason to keep the dog underweight. Use body condition—not breed stereotypes—to guide feeding, and ask your veterinarian for help if ribs, waist, muscle, appetite, or weight change unexpectedly.
Food puzzles and measured portions can turn part of a meal into mental enrichment. This is especially useful for a dog that enjoys searching and problem-solving, provided the puzzle is appropriate, introduced gradually, and supervised.

Is a Berger Picard right for you?
A Berger Picard may be a strong match if you want a close-working companion and are prepared to:
- Provide daily physical exercise in changing forms.
- Train throughout the dog’s life using fair, reward-based methods.
- Socialize carefully without expecting universal friendliness.
- Manage watchdog behavior and teach calm settling.
- Use secure fencing and thoughtful off-leash precautions.
- Accept some independence and occasional stubbornness.
- Maintain a relatively easy coat while still handling nails, ears, teeth, and seasonal shedding.
It may be a poor fit if you want a dog that is low-energy, instantly obedient, content with minimal interaction, or safe to leave without structured activity. The Picard’s coat is not especially demanding, but its brain, body, and working instincts require consistent investment.
Practical first-year checklist
- Schedule a veterinary examination soon after bringing the dog home.
- Discuss vaccination, parasite prevention, nutrition, dental care, growth, and safe exercise.
- Begin positive socialization and basic training immediately.
- Teach handling for ears, feet, nails, teeth, bathing, and veterinary procedures.
- Establish a daily mix of movement, sniffing, play, training, and rest.
- Use secure equipment and a long line only as a supervised training aid.
- Track body condition rather than relying on food labels or appearance alone.
- Tell every veterinarian about the breed-club anesthesia warning and the dog’s medical history.
- Keep grooming simple: occasional brushing, extra seasonal brushing, and no sculpting or shaving.
FAQ
Are Berger Picards easy to train?
They are intelligent and learn quickly, but they are not always mechanically obedient. Their independent, sensitive nature calls for short, varied, consistent training with positive reinforcement. Harsh correction can undermine learning, while inconsistent rules can encourage nuisance behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo Berger Picards need a lot of exercise?
Yes. They need exercise every day and benefit from a combination of walks, hikes, swimming, retrieving, play, sniffing, and mental work. The AKC recommends at least one long walk each day. Appropriate intensity depends on age, health, weather, conditioning, and the individual dog.
Are Berger Picards good family dogs?
They can be devoted companions in an active home prepared for exercise, training, and socialization. Individual temperament, the household, and supervised interactions determine whether a particular dog is a good match; breed descriptions do not guarantee compatibility with children or other animals.
How often does a Berger Picard need grooming?
Brushing about once a month is generally sufficient outside shedding season, according to the AKC. Brush more often during seasonal shedding; the coat should remain natural rather than sculpted or shaped. Nails also need regular trimming.
Does a Berger Picard have an anesthesia problem?
The breed club has reported anecdotal severe anesthesia reactions, including deaths, and recommends informing veterinarians. This is not proof that every Picard has an established anesthesia disorder. The veterinarian should review the dog’s history and create an individualized plan for each procedure.

The Berger Picard is best understood as a sensitive, independent working shepherd in a relatively easy-care coat.
