Eight of 21 rhesus macaques escaped when a truck overturned on Interstate 59 north of Heidelberg, Mississippi, on October 28, 2025. Five were recovered at the crash site, while three initially remained unaccounted for. Early warnings included disease claims, but Tulane said the animals had not been exposed to infectious agents, and the sheriff’s department later said the driver had supplied the information behind the warning.

The safe response is simple: do not approach or try to handle an escaped macaque. Keep children and pets away, and report a credible sighting to local authorities.

What happened on I-59?

On October 28, 2025, a truck carrying 21 rhesus macaques overturned on Interstate 59 north of Heidelberg, Mississippi. Eight animals escaped; five were recovered at the crash site and three initially left the immediate area. The crash cause was unclear in contemporaneous reporting.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) later confirmed that two of the three initially unaccounted-for macaques were found dead. The last was recovered on November 6, 2025, after a resident reported its location.

Why were residents warned about disease?

Early public statements included claims that the macaques carried infectious diseases and needed special handling. Those statements should not be presented as confirmed diagnoses. The Associated Press reported that Tulane said the animals had not been exposed to infectious agents, and that the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department later said the driver had supplied the information that the monkeys were dangerous and needed special handling. The cited reporting does not explain why the driver gave that information.

These accounts explain why the early warnings and later statements conflicted. They do not establish that the animals were infected, nor do the cited sources document a public-health exposure.

Were the macaques dangerous?

MDWFP’s October 29 public notice said: “Rhesus Macaques are known to be aggressive, and the public is advised to avoid any contact and should not attempt to approach them.” That general safety guidance is not evidence that these individual macaques had attacked anyone.

Loose, frightened animals should not be approached or handled by members of the public. Follow official instructions and let trained responders manage any recovery.

What is known about the shipment?

Contemporaneous Associated Press reporting said it was unclear who owned the macaques, who was transporting them, and where they were going. The available cited accounts also did not establish the cause of the crash. Treat those details as unresolved rather than assigning ownership or responsibility to an organization without confirmation.

What happened to the escaped macaques?

  • Five of the eight escaped animals were recovered at the crash site.
  • Two of the three initially unaccounted-for macaques were later found dead, according to the state wildlife agency.
  • The final macaque was recovered on November 6, 2025, after a resident reported its location.

MDWFP’s final recovery notice confirmed the search for the last unaccounted-for animal had ended.

What should people do if they see an escaped macaque?

  1. Keep your distance. Move away calmly and keep children and pets away.
  2. Do not approach or corner the animal. Do not try to get close for a photograph.
  3. Do not feed, touch, capture, or restrain it.
  4. Report a credible sighting to local law enforcement or the relevant wildlife agency, and follow their instructions.

What remains unclear?

In the cited contemporaneous reporting, the owner, transporter, destination, and cause of the crash were not established. The source material also does not explain why the driver supplied the initial danger information. Avoid treating unanswered questions or early claims as settled facts.
