Neither EPA nor DHA is universally better for every dog or cat. DHA deserves particular attention during growth and development, while veterinary guidance often considers EPA and DHA together for condition-specific supplementation. The right choice depends on your pet’s life stage, diet, health, and veterinary treatment plan.

EPA vs. DHA for dogs and cats

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are distinct long-chain omega-3 fatty acids found in marine sources. A product’s general “omega-3” claim does not tell you how much of either it supplies. Check the separate EPA and DHA amounts, and consider how much your pet already gets from food and other supplements.

Comparison EPA DHA
What it is A marine long-chain omega-3 fatty acid. A marine long-chain omega-3 fatty acid.
Pet-specific context Veterinary sources commonly discuss it together with DHA for therapeutic supplementation. Has a particularly clear role in neurologic and retinal development and is identified as required for growing puppies and kittens.
How to compare products Check the milligrams per serving and include the amount in your pet’s food. Check the milligrams per serving and include the amount in your pet’s food.

Veterinary nutrition authors Donna Raditic, DVM, DACVIM (Nutrition), and Laura Gaylord, DVM, DACVIM (Nutrition), write that DHA is required for growing puppies and kittens, while the optimal amount and form for pet diets remain unknown. Their statement is an attributed expert assessment, not a universal dosing standard. (Today’s Veterinary Practice)

When does DHA matter most?

DHA is especially relevant during growth because of its role in neurologic tissues and research on retinal development and cognitive function in growing puppies. Veterinary nutrition sources identify DHA as required for growing puppies and kittens. That does not mean every young pet needs a separate supplement: a complete food may already provide DHA and other nutrients appropriate to its life stage.

For adult dogs and cats, the reviewed veterinary sources do not establish a universal rule that EPA should always exceed DHA, or that DHA should always exceed EPA. For a diagnosed condition, ask whether your veterinarian recommends EPA and DHA and what amount is appropriate for your animal.

Should I choose fish oil with more EPA or more DHA?

There is no universal EPA-to-DHA ratio that is best for every pet. The useful comparison is the amount of each fatty acid per serving, the total amount in the diet, and whether a veterinarian has identified a specific reason to supplement.

Veterinary sources discuss EPA and DHA together for several therapeutic uses. That does not mean supplementation is suitable for every animal, or that a product with a higher amount of one fatty acid is automatically the better choice. Ask your veterinarian to connect the product and its composition to your pet’s needs.

How to check your pet’s total intake

Some complete foods, including therapeutic diets, may already contain meaningful amounts of EPA and DHA. Adding oil without counting the food’s contribution can lead to unnecessary or excessive supplementation. If a label does not state the amounts, check the manufacturer’s nutrition information or ask the manufacturer.

  1. Check the food first. Look for EPA and DHA in the guaranteed analysis or the manufacturer’s nutrition details, if available.
  2. Read the supplement amounts separately. Find the milligrams of EPA and DHA per stated serving; “total fish oil” or “omega-3” alone is not enough to compare products.
  3. Work out the actual daily serving. Use the label’s serving size and measuring directions. Do not assume the total oil weight equals the EPA and DHA amount.
  4. Include other sources. Tell your veterinarian about treats, other supplements, and the current diet so total intake can be considered.
  5. Ask about suitability and monitoring. Review the product, amount, duration, and any follow-up needed with your veterinarian.

How much EPA and DHA should my pet get?

There is no one-size-fits-all amount for dogs and cats. Recommendations depend on species, body size, life stage, diagnosis, current diet, and the product’s EPA and DHA content. Veterinary literature reports therapeutic dose ranges, but those ranges should not be used as an owner dosing instruction.

Have a veterinarian decide whether supplementation is appropriate and determine the amount. This is especially important for cats: a veterinary nutrition overview reports that no safe upper limit has been published for cats at any life stage. Do not extrapolate a dog reference value to a cat.

Potential risks and when to check with a veterinarian

A peer-reviewed veterinary review describes potential adverse effects of omega-3 supplementation, including gastrointestinal effects, changes in platelet function, effects on wound healing, weight gain, nutrient excess or toxin exposure, and interactions with medicines. These are potential risks, not effects every animal will experience. (Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine)

Before adding concentrated oil, discuss your pet’s health conditions, medicines, other supplements, and any planned surgery with a veterinarian. The product’s source alone does not establish its quality, purity, or suitability for your individual pet. Oily fish, krill oil, and algae oil can provide EPA and DHA, but the source does not determine the right dose. (Merck Veterinary Manual)

Does my dog or cat need fish oil?

Not necessarily. Start with your pet’s complete diet and the reason you are considering a supplement. If a health condition is involved, ask your veterinarian whether EPA and DHA have a role in that animal’s care and whether the current food already supplies them.

FAQ

Is EPA or DHA better for dogs and cats?

Neither is universally better. DHA has a particularly clear role during growth and development, while veterinary supplementation is often discussed in terms of EPA and DHA together. The right emphasis depends on the pet and the reason for supplementation.

Should I choose fish oil with more EPA or more DHA?

Do not choose by the higher number alone. Compare the separate amounts, account for what your pet already gets from food, and ask your veterinarian whether a particular composition is appropriate.

Does my dog or cat need fish oil?

Not automatically. A complete food may already provide EPA and DHA, and supplementation depends on life stage, diet, and health. Ask your veterinarian before adding concentrated oil.

How much EPA and DHA should my pet get?

The appropriate amount varies by species, body size, life stage, diagnosis, diet, and product. Have your veterinarian set the amount rather than applying a general range or another animal’s dose.

What should I look for on a pet fish-oil label?

Look for separate EPA and DHA amounts per serving and species-appropriate directions. Also check how much your pet already gets from its food; a general “omega-3” or total fish-oil figure alone does not show the amount of each fatty acid.
