Marineland’s threatened euthanasia did not happen as described in its warnings: Georgia Aquarium says all 30 belugas and four dolphins were relocated by September 1, 2026. But the welfare story is not over: Buffalo Toronto Public Media reported on September 28 that four belugas and one dolphin had died after the move, while investigations and necropsies were ongoing.
The whales went to facilities in the United States and Spain. Here is what is known about the rescue, where the animals went, and what remains unsettled about the reported deaths.
What happened to Marineland’s belugas?
Marineland of Canada, a marine park in Niagara Falls, Ontario, warned the federal fisheries minister on January 21, 2026, that its belugas and dolphins faced imminent euthanasia if exports could not proceed. Canada had denied the park’s October 2025 request to send 30 belugas to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in China.
On January 26, Canada conditionally approved export to identified U.S. facilities. The approval required destination and transport details and written assessments from a Canadian-accredited registered veterinarian confirming that each animal was fit to travel. It was not blanket approval for any destination.

Georgia Aquarium says the international rescue was completed on September 1, 2026. Its account describes six transports over six weeks across three countries, with groups arranged around existing social bonds. The receiving facilities said the animals would need time to acclimate; Georgia Aquarium said full acclimation could take several months.
Where did the belugas and dolphins go?
According to Georgia Aquarium’s account of the completed rescue, the 30 belugas and four dolphins were distributed among four receiving destinations:
| Destination | Animals reported by Georgia Aquarium |
|---|---|
| SeaWorld San Diego and SeaWorld San Antonio | 16 belugas combined |
| Shedd Aquarium, Chicago | 10 belugas |
| Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta | Two belugas |
| Oceanogrà fic Valencia, Spain | Two belugas and four dolphins |
This breakdown is Georgia Aquarium’s account of the rescue, not an independent comparative assessment of the facilities or the animals’ welfare. Shedd Aquarium said in its July 8 announcement that U.S. and Canadian authorities had provided authorizations for an emergency rescue after reviewing feasibility and logistics plans.
Did any of the whales die after the move?
Yes. Buffalo Toronto Public Media reported on September 28, 2026, that four belugas and one dolphin had died after relocation. The report said investigations and necropsies were ongoing, so this is a time-stamped report rather than a final tally or a complete determination of cause.
The same report said necropsies on two belugas at Shedd found chronic gastrointestinal disease and foreign objects in their stomachs. Those findings were described as preliminary. They do not, by themselves, establish the cause of every death or responsibility for the animals’ condition.
Georgia Aquarium says the animals may take several months to settle into their new environments. The available reporting does not support claims that all animals are healthy, that transport caused the reported deaths, or that preliminary findings settle questions about neglect.
Why did Marineland warn that euthanasia was imminent?
Marineland told Canada’s fisheries minister on January 21, 2026, that the animals faced imminent euthanasia if export could not proceed. The warning followed the park’s October 2025 request to export 30 belugas to China, which the government denied.

- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
The government record says the proposed destination had not committed against breeding and that continued public entertainment use was likely. Canada’s later conditional approval and the eventual rescue involved identified destinations, transport plans, and veterinary fitness assessments. The approvals should not be described as a general permission to export cetaceans anywhere.
Why were the belugas moved to facilities rather than released into the wild?
The documented rescue was a managed transfer to marine facilities, not a release into the ocean. Canada’s approval process required individual veterinary assessments and transport planning, and the receiving institutions described plans for continued care and acclimation.
The dossier’s sources do not establish that any individual whale was assessed as fit for release into the wild. The transfer destinations and veterinary oversight should not be treated as an independent comparative welfare evaluation or as a resolution of the broader debate about keeping cetaceans in human care.
How Canada’s captive-cetacean law shaped the transfers
Canada’s 2019 amendments to the Fisheries Act and Criminal Code were intended to end keeping cetaceans in captivity, breeding them in captivity, and using them for entertainment, with exceptions including a grandfather clause for animals already held when the amendments took effect.
The government record says a permit to export a living cetacean may be issued for scientific research or captivity when that is in the animal’s welfare interest. The rules therefore should not be simplified to say that all exports are categorically prohibited. In Marineland’s case, the government denied the China proposal and later conditionally approved transfers to identified facilities, subject to requirements including destination information, transport plans, and veterinary assessments.
What is known about Marineland’s welfare history?
The Associated Press reported that 20 whales—19 belugas and one killer whale—had died at Marineland since 2019, citing provincial government data and official statements. This is a reported historical count, not a mortality audit conducted for this article.
Post-transfer reporting is also still developing. Buffalo Toronto Public Media’s September 28 report described four beluga deaths and one dolphin death after relocation, along with preliminary findings from two beluga necropsies at Shedd. Keep those reported observations distinct from final causes, responsibility, and broader claims about care.
