Drain flies are tiny, fuzzy, moth-like flies whose larvae grow in the gel-like buildup inside drains. To get rid of them, clean accessible drain surfaces and remove that buildup; if flies persist, look for another drain or an inaccessible wet source. Start with cleaning rather than pesticides, and follow a product’s label and pet precautions if you use one.

EPA describes drain flies as very tiny, moth-like flies with gray, fuzzy, heart-shaped wings. Appearance is a useful clue, not a definitive identification. EPA’s child-care IPM guide identifies the gel layer in drains as a place where their larvae grow.

Where drain flies breed

The breeding material is a gel-like layer of organic buildup. EPA guidance also describes drain-fly larvae in gelatinous material in drain traps and sewers, and notes overflow pipes as a possible site. Check the drain opening, accessible inner surfaces, overflow openings, and nearby damp areas. If cleaning the obvious drain does not help, another or inaccessible source may be involved.

How to get rid of drain flies

  1. Inspect likely sources. Check the drain opening, accessible drain surfaces, overflow openings, and nearby damp areas. If several drains are possible, inspect them separately.
  2. Remove the buildup. Clean accessible drain surfaces to remove the gel-like material where larvae develop. A narrow drain-cleaning brush can help with accessible areas; choose one that fits and follow the fixture manufacturer’s instructions. Do not force a tool into plumbing.
  3. Consider an enzyme drain cleaner only as directed. EPA mentions enzyme drain cleaners as an option, but no particular product is necessary or suitable for every plumbing system. Check that the product label allows the intended use and follow its instructions.
  4. Recheck the source. Adult flies may still be present after cleaning. If flies continue, inspect other drains, traps, overflow openings, sewers, or damp areas; consider a plumber or local pest professional if the source is inaccessible or the problem persists.

Cleaning and product choices

Option What it can do Important limit
Mechanical cleaning Remove buildup from accessible drain surfaces; a suitably sized narrow brush can help. May not reach a hidden or inaccessible source.
Enzyme drain cleaner EPA mentions enzyme drain cleaners as an option. Check the current label for the intended drain and follow all directions; no product is established as universally suitable.
Plumber or pest professional Help investigate a persistent or inaccessible source. Ask what source they suspect and what treatment and pet precautions they recommend.

Pet safety when using products

Cleaning and removing the source is the pet-conscious starting point. No product is established here as universally safe around pets. Ingredients, exposure, intended use, and label directions matter.

  • 【Metal Claw Grabber for Stubborn Clogs】 This extra-long 35.5-inch metal grabber features a flexible yet sturdy shaft and a 4-claw tip that opens and closes by the handle. It bends easily into curved pipes and P-traps to latch onto solid obstructions, toys, and thick hair clogs that plastic snakes simply can’t grip.
  • 【6 Extra-Long Drain Snakes】 With a 25-inch length that reaches deeper than standard 20-inch tools, these highly flexible barbed wands glide into tight drains to hook hair, food particles, and grime. The tiny hooked teeth make insertion smooth and removal effective, and they rinse clean in seconds for repeated use.
  • 【2 Pipe Brushes for Daily Maintenance】 These durable, bendable brushes reach the pipe inner walls to scrub away stubborn buildup, slime, and odor-causing residue that clogs often start from. Regular use helps maintain a smooth water flow, prevent future blockages, and keep drains fresh without harsh chemicals.
  • 【9-Piece All-in-One Professional Tool Set】 Everything you need in one kit: 1 metal claw grabber for tough clogs, 6 drain snakes for hair, and 2 pipe brushes for routine deep cleaning. It’s a cost-effective alternative to expensive plumber visits, covering removal, extraction, and prevention with a single set.
  • 【Simple Operation and Wide Application】 Just insert, twist or push, and pull out the clog—no complicated steps. Suitable for kitchen sinks, bathroom basins, showers, bathtubs, toilets, and sewer drains. The tools are reusable and designed to be safe for your pipes while delivering strong cleaning performance.
  • Read and follow the current product label, including where it may be used and any re-entry instructions.
  • Keep pets and children away from areas where pesticides have been applied, as EPA advises.
  • Do not spray pets, floors, or drain areas unless the label specifically permits that use.
  • If label directions are unclear, contact the product manufacturer or a veterinarian before use.

EPA’s smart pest-control guidance also supports careful, label-directed pesticide use rather than assuming that more pesticide is better.

Preventing a return

Keep drains and nearby areas clean, and address moisture problems such as leaks. EPA also recommends not leaving pet food and water out overnight as a general pest-prevention practice; this is not a drain-fly cure by itself. If flies keep appearing after accessible buildup is removed, investigate other wet or inaccessible sites rather than repeatedly applying products.
