Short answer: Give a pet chinchilla a secure, roomy, ventilated indoor home with safe platforms and places to hide, keep it cool and dry, and provide good-quality grass hay at all times plus chinchilla-specific pellets and fresh water. Offer suitable dust baths for brief sessions, provide safe supervised exercise, check eating and droppings daily, and arrange routine care with a veterinarian experienced with chinchillas.

Chinchillas are active animals with specialized care needs. Their sensitivity to heat, need for a high-fiber diet, and tendency to chew make a safe environment and daily observation especially important. Find an experienced veterinarian before bringing one home.

Chinchilla care at a glance

Care need Practical guidance
Temperature Keep the room cool and dry. Recommendations vary: RSPCA guidance gives an ideal of 10–18°C; Royal Veterinary College guidance gives 10–20°C in low humidity. Merck describes a broader adapted range but warns about heatstroke at higher temperatures, especially with humidity.
Housing Use a secure, roomy, well-ventilated indoor enclosure with safe resting levels, hiding places, and room to run and jump. Avoid excessive falls and prolonged standing on wire.
Staple food Provide good-quality grass hay freely at all times, with chinchilla-specific pellets as an additional food and fresh water.
Dust baths Offer suitable chinchilla dust in a tray for a brief session, then remove the tray. Guidance ranges from daily access to two or three sessions weekly.
Daily care Check hay, water, eating, droppings, and behavior every day; keep the enclosure clean and provide safe exercise and hiding places.
Veterinary care Arrange routine check-ups with a veterinarian experienced with chinchillas; RSPCA recommends at least yearly check-ups.

Temperature and dust-bathing recommendations differ among veterinary and welfare sources. Keep the home cool and dry, avoid heat and humidity, and ask a chinchilla-experienced veterinarian how to apply general guidance to your home and animal. See Merck Veterinary Manual’s housing guidance and VCA’s chinchilla housing guidance.

1. Set up a safe, spacious enclosure

Choose usable space, not just a starter cage

Choose the largest practical secure enclosure you can accommodate. Chinchillas need room to run and jump as well as safe resting levels. Consider usable horizontal and vertical space, ventilation, the layout of platforms, and whether the animal could fall from a dangerous height.

RSPCA guidance advises against uninterrupted platform heights greater than 60 cm to reduce injury risk. Provide several safe levels and resting places rather than one high drop. Make sure platforms and ramps are stable and that the enclosure gives the chinchilla places to hide.

Choose a sturdy enclosure made from safe materials, with openings that cannot trap a foot or leg. Chinchillas chew, so avoid plastic toys and remove accessible electrical cables. Inspect the enclosure and furnishings regularly for damage, sharp edges, and loose parts.

Use safe flooring and furnishings

Provide solid resting areas as well as mesh where applicable. Prolonged standing on wire can injure a chinchilla’s feet. Use safe, chew-appropriate platforms, hiding places, and enrichment, and remove anything damaged or hazardous.

Keep the enclosure clean, dry, and away from direct sunlight, drafts, and predator pets. Chinchillas should have hiding places and safe resting areas. Keep the home quiet and avoid situations where cats or dogs can reach or harass the animal.

Put the cage in the right room

Place the enclosure indoors, away from direct sun, heat sources, drafts, and sudden disturbances. Keep household pets from reaching through the bars or startling the chinchilla. Supervise interactions with other animals and do not allow unsupervised access.

Chinchillas can be frightened by rough handling or stressful environments. A quiet location and predictable routine help make daily care safer and less stressful.

2. Keep the room cool and dry

Heat and humidity can be dangerous for chinchillas. Temperature guidance differs by source: RSPCA recommends an ideal indoor range of 10–18°C, while Royal Veterinary College guidance describes 10–20°C in low humidity. Merck Veterinary Manual describes an adapted ambient range of 18.3–26.7°C (65–80°F), but warns that heatstroke can occur above that range, especially with humidity. These figures are not a single agreed safe target; a prudent approach is to provide a cool, dry room and avoid conditions approaching 26°C.

Merck Veterinary Manual describes chinchillas as “very tolerant of cold but sensitive to heat.” Monitor the conditions around the enclosure, particularly during warm weather, and ask a chinchilla-experienced veterinarian about your home’s climate. Do not rely on a fan alone to make a hot room safe.

Recognize heat stress as an emergency

Weakness, collapse, rapid or labored breathing, drooling, unusual restlessness, or neurologic changes during warm conditions require urgent veterinary attention. Move the chinchilla to a cooler, shaded area while contacting an exotic-animal veterinarian. Do not delay care while trying home treatments.

3. Build the diet around hay

Hay should be available all the time

Good-quality grass hay should be the main part of the diet and available freely at all times. Long-strand grass hay, including timothy hay, provides fiber and encourages chewing that supports normal wear of continuously growing teeth. Keep hay clean and dry, and replace uneaten hay that is soiled or spoiled. Fresh timothy hay for chinchillas is one suitable option.

Offer chinchilla-specific pellets and fresh water

Provide an appropriate chinchilla-specific pellet as an additional food, not a replacement for hay. Follow the food’s directions and your veterinarian’s advice. Avoid colorful, seed-heavy or sugary mixes that encourage selective eating.

Provide fresh water every day in a reliable bottle or stable bowl. Check that the bottle is working and that water is clean and accessible. Clean food and water equipment regularly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be cautious with treats and food changes

Keep treats limited and do not present fruit or sugary snacks as dietary staples. Avoid abrupt food changes, and remove uneaten food that could spoil. Introduce any new food cautiously and ask a veterinarian before making a major diet change.

Reduced appetite, soft stool, bloating, or fewer droppings after a food change warrants prompt veterinary advice. Do not respond by adding more treats or repeatedly switching foods without guidance.

For veterinary nutrition information, see Merck Veterinary Manual’s chinchilla reference and VCA’s chinchilla feeding guidance.

4. Protect continuously growing teeth

Chinchilla teeth grow continuously. Daily access to grass hay encourages chewing and helps support normal tooth wear. Provide safe chew materials and check them for wear or damage.

Watch for reduced eating or chewing, weight loss, fewer droppings, drooling, or wet fur beneath the chin. Merck Veterinary Manual identifies drooling and wet fur beneath the chin as possible signs of dental problems. These changes warrant advice from a veterinarian experienced with chinchillas.

Do not try to trim or file teeth at home. A veterinarian can assess dental problems and recommend appropriate care. See Merck Veterinary Manual’s chinchilla reference.

5. Provide dust baths, not water baths

Dust bathing is a necessary grooming behavior. Offer a shallow tray with suitable chinchilla dust for a brief session, then remove the tray and clean or replace dust that has become soiled. Do not leave the bath in the enclosure continuously; excessive dust bathing can irritate the eyes and affect the respiratory tract.

Guidance on frequency differs. Merck Veterinary Manual describes two to three sessions weekly, while VCA and RSPCA guidance describes daily access. Follow an exotic-animal veterinarian’s advice for your chinchilla rather than treating one schedule as universal. Merck describes sessions of up to 15 minutes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use dust made for chinchillas rather than ordinary sand or an improvised household product. See Merck’s chinchilla reference and VCA’s housing guidance.

6. Make exercise and enrichment safe

Provide safe activity

Give chinchillas safe opportunities to run, jump, climb, explore, hide, and chew. Make sure platforms are secure and arrange them to reduce the risk of falls. Remove plastic toys and anything that could injure the animal if chewed or swallowed.

Chinchilla-proof out-of-cage time

Only allow out-of-enclosure activity in a chinchilla-proofed space under continuous supervision. Chinchillas investigate by chewing, so secure electrical cables and remove access to hazards, gaps, and objects that could be swallowed or cause injury. Keep cats, dogs, and children out of the exercise area unless interactions are closely supervised.

Social needs and introductions

Chinchillas are social animals, but introducing a companion is not automatically safe. Introductions should be gradual and closely supervised. Ask a veterinarian or qualified rescue for advice if considering a second chinchilla, and have separate housing available if they do not get along.

A chinchilla living alone still needs daily interaction, enrichment, observation, and predictable human contact. Changes in behavior or repeated signs of fear or stress are reasons to seek advice from a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional.

7. Handle gently and build trust

Use a calm voice, slow movements, and predictable routines. Let the chinchilla approach you when possible, and avoid chasing or rough restraint. Chinchillas are fast and can be injured if dropped or handled forcefully.

When you need to lift a chinchilla, support its body and keep it close to a secure surface. Children should always be supervised around chinchillas. Use a secure carrier for veterinary visits.

8. Follow a simple daily and weekly routine

Daily checklist

  1. Check that the room remains cool and dry, especially in warm weather.
  2. Provide clean water and confirm the bottle or bowl is working.
  3. Keep good-quality grass hay available and remove soiled or spoiled food.
  4. Offer the appropriate chinchilla-specific pellet.
  5. Observe eating, droppings, behavior, and general condition.
  6. Provide safe activity, hiding places, and access to resting areas.
  7. Offer a brief dust-bath session according to your veterinarian’s advice, then remove the tray.

Weekly and ongoing care

  1. Clean the enclosure regularly and sooner if it becomes soiled.
  2. Clean food and water equipment regularly.
  3. Inspect platforms, ramps, hiding places, and chew materials for damage or loose parts.
  4. Note changes in appetite, water intake, droppings, behavior, and body condition.
  5. Arrange routine veterinary check-ups; RSPCA recommends at least yearly check-ups.

Daily observation can help you notice changes early. Reduced eating, changes in droppings, or behavior changes should prompt advice from a veterinarian. The Merck chinchilla care checklist covers routine care and health observation.

9. Find an exotic-animal veterinarian before an emergency

Find a veterinarian experienced with chinchillas before an emergency. Ask how urgent problems are handled and identify an after-hours option if your regular clinic does not provide emergency care.

Routine check-ups help a veterinarian assess your chinchilla’s health and advise you about its care. RSPCA recommends check-ups at least yearly. Dental and digestive problems are among the reasons to monitor eating and chewing closely.

Signs that need veterinary advice

Contact a veterinarian promptly if you notice:

  • Refusal to eat or a marked reduction in eating
  • Fewer droppings or a change in their appearance
  • Drooling or wet fur beneath the chin
  • Unusual behavior, fear, or signs of stress
  • Weakness, collapse, or difficult breathing
  • Suspected heat exposure or injury

Do not give human medication, antibiotics, laxatives, or leftover prescriptions unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to. Contact a chinchilla-experienced veterinarian for advice rather than attempting to diagnose or treat a serious problem at home.

What to prepare before bringing a chinchilla home

Prepare the essentials before adoption or purchase. Check that every enclosure, furnishing, and enrichment item is secure, safe to chew, and appropriate for a chinchilla.
