Can You Compost Pet Waste? How to Safely Compost Dog Poop

Keep dog poop out of ordinary backyard compost. A dedicated dog-waste system requires active management, temperature monitoring, turning, and the extended curing period described by USDA; if you cannot manage it, follow local disposal guidance.

Do not put dog poop in an ordinary backyard compost pile with kitchen scraps and garden waste: the EPA lists pet waste and cat litter among materials to avoid. A separate dog-waste composting system may be considered, but the USDA guidance describes an actively managed process that requires carbon material, moisture control, internal temperature monitoring, turning, and extended curing.

If you cannot manage those steps, use ordinary disposal or a locally approved service. The available guidance does not establish that finished dog-waste compost is safe for edible crops, so avoid using it in food gardens unless local authoritative advice says otherwise.

Ordinary compost pile or dedicated dog-waste system?

The EPA’s home-composting guidance says to keep pet waste and cat litter out of a backyard compost pile. Separately, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service describes a specialized method for dog waste. That method is not permission to add dog poop to a normal household compost pile.

Approach Guidance What to consider
Ordinary backyard compost pile Keep dog waste, cat feces, and cat litter out. EPA says typical backyard piles are not suitable for these materials.
Dedicated dog-waste composting system Consider only if you can follow dog-specific guidance for carbon, moisture, temperature monitoring, turning, and curing. It requires a substantial, actively managed pile and a suitable non-food end use.
Trash or local service Follow local disposal rules and verify what a collection service accepts. Rules and facility acceptance vary by location; do not assume curbside organics accepts pet waste.

For many households, bagging dog waste and disposing of it according to local rules is the simplest option.

Why ordinary composting is not recommended

Composting is managed aerobic decomposition: it depends on oxygen, suitable carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich materials, water, and controlled conditions. The EPA says beneficial microorganisms operate optimally at 131–160°F and that pile conditions at or above 131°F for several days are needed to meet pathogen-reduction standards; the required duration depends on the composting method. This is general compost guidance, not a dog-waste-specific safety guarantee.

EPA’s composting guidance explains that if a pile does not reach required conditions, decomposition may be slower and pathogens may remain. A pile that looks dark or smells earthy is not proof that it is safe.

How to compost dog poop in a dedicated system

The following summary reflects the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service’s dog-waste composting booklet. It describes dog waste only; do not add cat feces or cat litter. The booklet is guidance, not a guarantee that every home system or batch will achieve pathogen reduction.

  1. Choose a suitable site and dedicated system. Keep the system separate from food scraps and ordinary garden compost. Follow the booklet’s site guidance, and choose a location where you can safely access, monitor, and turn the pile. Keep runoff from reaching water sources or sensitive areas.
  2. Mix in carbon material. Combine dog waste with sawdust or another suitable carbon-rich material. Mix it through the pile rather than leaving waste in clumps.
  3. Control moisture and provide air. Add water gradually to reach a wrung-out-sponge consistency. The material should be damp, not waterlogged. The USDA booklet describes covering the pile and managing it to retain suitable conditions while allowing aeration.
  4. Build enough material to retain heat. The USDA booklet emphasizes that a substantial pile is needed to insulate and maintain heat. Do not assume a small bin or tumbler is equivalent to the managed pile it describes.
  5. Measure and record internal temperatures. Use a compost thermometer to check inside the pile and keep records. The USDA booklet states: “A thermometer and good record keeping are essential to successfully composting dog waste.” A thermometer supports monitoring; it does not prove every part of the pile has been treated.
  6. Turn the pile as temperatures decline. Move cooler outer material toward the center, then continue monitoring. Turning helps expose more of the pile to hot conditions; a single warm reading is not evidence that all material received the same treatment.
  7. Allow the material to cure for an extended period. The USDA booklet recommends curing finished compost for several months or even a year. Do not substitute a shorter general composting timeline or treat appearance alone as proof of safety.
  8. Choose a cautious end use. The available sources do not establish that every finished dog-waste compost is safe for edible crops. Avoid food-garden use unless local extension or public-health guidance supports it. Check local rules before using or disposing of the material.

What if the pile does not heat or manage well?

  • It does not heat: EPA guidance notes that temperature depends on controlled conditions and that cooler piles may decompose more slowly, with pathogens potentially remaining. Do not assume the material is safe; use another locally approved disposal route if you cannot manage the system.
  • It is saturated or leaking: Protect it from excess water and prevent runoff. Follow reliable local technical guidance before continuing.
  • The center is warm but the edges are not: Turn the pile so outer material moves toward the center, then keep monitoring and recording temperatures.
  • You cannot turn or monitor it: Do not treat an unmanaged pile as a safe dog-waste composting system.

Can dog-waste compost go in a vegetable garden?

The sources in this research do not establish that finished dog-waste compost is safe for edible crops. Avoid applying it to vegetable gardens, herb beds, fruit trees, berry bushes, or other food-producing areas unless local extension or public-health guidance specifically supports that use. Do not infer safety from a dark color, earthy smell, or a single temperature reading.

Why cat waste and cat litter should stay out

The USDA booklet describes dog waste, not cat waste. Keep cat feces and cat litter out of both an ordinary backyard compost pile and the dog-waste system. Follow local instructions for disposal.

What about compostable dog-poop bags?

A bag marked “compostable” is not automatically suitable for backyard composting. EPA’s home-composting guidance lists compostable bags among materials to avoid in a typical backyard pile. Check the rules of the specific system or facility before placing bagged pet waste in a collection stream; do not assume curbside organics accepts it.

Alternatives when composting is not practical

Ordinary trash disposal

Bag dog waste and place it in the trash if local rules allow. Keep it secured and out of reach of children and animals.

Local collection or commercial processing

Ask your municipal waste department or a local provider whether it accepts pet waste, which bags it permits, and how the material is processed. Acceptance varies by location.

How hot does dog-poop compost need to get?

The EPA says beneficial microorganisms operate optimally at 131–160°F and that conditions at or above 131°F for several days are needed to meet pathogen-reduction standards, with duration depending on the method. This general guidance is not a dog-waste-specific guarantee; the USDA booklet also calls for monitoring, record keeping, and turning.

How long should dog-waste compost cure?

The USDA dog-waste booklet recommends curing finished compost for several months or even a year. Follow the booklet’s guidance and local technical advice rather than relying on appearance or a short general composting timeline.

Can I use dog-waste compost in a vegetable garden?

The sources available here do not establish that every finished batch is safe for edible crops. Avoid food-garden use unless local extension or public-health guidance specifically supports it.
