Gastroenteritis in dogs describes inflammation of the stomach and intestines; it does not identify the cause. Vomiting and diarrhea can also result from infection, poisoning, an obstruction, or disease elsewhere in the body, so a veterinarian may need to rule out more serious problems. Seek veterinary advice promptly for repeated vomiting, blood or black stool, lethargy, poor appetite, pain, or worsening signs.
Ongoing vomiting and diarrhea can cause dehydration and electrolyte loss. Puppies and incompletely vaccinated dogs with compatible signs need prompt assessment because canine parvovirus is a serious possibility.
What is gastroenteritis in dogs?
Gastroenteritis is inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract—the stomach and intestines. Common signs include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal tenderness, reduced appetite, and lethargy. Vomit may contain yellowish bile, but its color alone does not identify the cause.
Veterinarians may use gastroenteritis as a working label or diagnosis of exclusion after considering other explanations. The seriousness depends on the cause, fluid loss, the dog’s age and health, and whether complications or another disease are present.

Common causes of gastroenteritis in dogs
Infection, medications, and new foods can cause gastrointestinal inflammation. Vomiting and diarrhea can also be signs of other conditions, including an obstruction or disease outside the digestive tract.
| Possible cause | Examples and why it matters |
|---|---|
| Dietary upset or irritation | A new food, scavenging, spoiled food, or a rich meal may upset the digestive tract. Do not assume this is the cause when signs are severe, persistent, recurrent, or painful. |
| Infection | Viruses, bacteria, and parasites can cause signs. Canine parvovirus is highly contagious and commonly affects young or unvaccinated dogs; it can cause vomiting, lethargy, appetite loss, and often bloody diarrhea. |
| Medications or toxins | Some medicines and poisonous substances can cause gastrointestinal signs or injure other organs. Contact a veterinarian promptly about a suspected exposure. |
| Foreign material or obstruction | A swallowed object can irritate or block the digestive tract. Obstruction may require urgent treatment and cannot be safely managed with a home diet or antidiarrheal. |
| Other digestive or systemic disease | Pancreatic, liver, kidney, endocrine, and other diseases can cause similar signs. Acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome can involve sudden, profuse bloody diarrhea; an owner cannot reliably distinguish it from other causes at home. |
Diagnosis and treatment depend on the dog’s history, examination, and sometimes testing. Antibiotics are not routine for every episode; a veterinarian may consider them when signs are severe or evidence suggests bacterial infection.
Signs to watch for
Possible signs include:
- Intermittent or repeated vomiting, sometimes with yellowish bile.
- Diarrhea, including frequent or watery stools.
- Blood in stool or black, tarry stool.
- Abdominal tenderness.
- Reduced appetite or refusal to eat.
- Lethargy or weakness.
- Signs of dehydration after ongoing fluid loss.
Vomiting and diarrhea have many possible causes. Blood, marked weakness, pain, or difficulty standing should not be dismissed as routine stomach upset.
When should you seek veterinary care?
Contact a veterinarian promptly if your dog is lethargic, stops eating, has vomiting alongside diarrhea, has blood in the stool, or has black, tarry stool. VCA Urgent Care advises urgent evaluation when a pet has vomited more than twice in 24 hours, has multiple episodes of soft or watery stool, is anorexic or lethargic, or has blood in the stool. Severe illness or difficulty standing or walking warrants emergency care.

Seek care sooner if your dog is worsening, cannot keep water down, appears weak or dehydrated, has abdominal pain or distention, or may have swallowed a foreign object or toxin. Young or incompletely vaccinated dogs with compatible signs need prompt veterinary assessment for possible parvovirus. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises veterinary care when diarrhea does not resolve in 48–72 hours, but do not wait that long if warning signs are present.
For suspected poisoning, call a veterinarian or emergency animal hospital for instructions. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically tells you to.
What will a veterinarian do?
Be ready to describe when signs began, how often they occur, what the vomit and stool look like, what the dog may have eaten or drunk in the prior 48 hours, possible toxin or foreign-object exposure, current medicines or supplements, prior episodes, and vaccination status.
The veterinarian will examine your dog and assess hydration and overall condition. Depending on the history and findings, testing may include:

Not every dog needs every test. The goal is to assess whether the signs are uncomplicated inflammation or require specific treatment, hospitalization, or closer monitoring.
How is gastroenteritis treated?
Treatment depends on the cause and how ill or dehydrated the dog is. Rehydration and correction of electrolyte losses are central when needed. A veterinarian may also prescribe anti-nausea medicine, deworming treatment when parasites are present or suspected, or other care directed at the underlying problem.
Fluids and electrolyte correction
Fluids may be given orally, under the skin, or intravenously, depending on the dog’s condition. A severely dehydrated, weak, or repeatedly vomiting dog may need intravenous fluids and monitoring.
Food and nutritional support
There is no universal fasting plan for every vomiting dog. Follow your veterinarian’s advice about when and what to feed. For mild diarrhea, Cornell describes bland, digestible food such as boiled chicken or low-fat hamburger with white rice as a possible option; avoid any ingredient your dog is allergic or intolerant to. A veterinarian may recommend a therapeutic veterinary gastrointestinal diet. Diet does not treat an obstruction, poisoning, parvovirus, or every other cause of vomiting and diarrhea.

Medication and treatment of the cause
A veterinarian may use antiemetic medication and, when indicated, other medicines. Antibiotics are not standard treatment for every case. Parvovirus, an obstruction, toxin exposure, acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome, or systemic disease may require specific treatment and monitoring.
Do not give human medicines such as bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto Bismol) or loperamide (Imodium) unless a veterinarian directs you to. Cornell warns that these medicines can harm some dogs or interact poorly with other medicines. Do not use leftover medication prescribed for another pet.

Home care is appropriate only when the dog’s condition and the veterinarian’s advice support it. Fresh water should be available, but do not force food or water into a repeatedly vomiting dog.
- Call for guidance. Describe the signs, age and health of your dog, possible exposures, and whether water stays down.
- Prevent further access. Secure garbage, medications, chemicals, toxic foods, and objects the dog might chew or swallow.
- Follow the feeding plan. If feeding is appropriate, use the food and schedule your veterinarian recommends.
- Track changes. Note vomiting, stool appearance, appetite, drinking, energy, and signs of pain or weakness. Photos may help your veterinarian assess vomit or stool.
- Contact the clinic again if needed. Seek care sooner if signs worsen or new warning signs appear; follow the veterinarian’s recheck instructions.
Preventing future episodes
- Keep medications, chemicals, toxic foods, and small chewable objects out of reach.
- Secure garbage and reduce opportunities for scavenging.
- Introduce diet changes gradually.
- Maintain vaccination, including appropriate parvovirus protection, and follow your veterinarian’s parasite-prevention advice.
Repeated or unexplained episodes may need further evaluation, such as fecal testing, bloodwork, or abdominal imaging.

FAQ
Can gastroenteritis in dogs be contagious?
Some causes of gastrointestinal signs are infectious, while others, such as dietary upset or an obstruction, are not. Keep a sick dog away from other dogs as a precaution and ask the clinic about arrival instructions, especially if vaccination is incomplete.
Is yellow vomit always gastroenteritis?
No. Yellowish vomit may contain bile, but its color does not identify the cause. Vomiting can have many causes, including obstruction, infection, or disease elsewhere in the body.
When should I call a veterinarian about diarrhea?
Call promptly if your dog is lethargic, stops eating, is vomiting, has blood or black, tarry stool, or is worsening. Cornell advises veterinary care if diarrhea does not resolve in 48–72 hours; warning signs mean you should not wait for that timeframe.
Can I give my dog an over-the-counter antidiarrheal?
Not without veterinary direction. Medicines such as bismuth subsalicylate or loperamide can harm some dogs or interact with other medicines.
Can gastroenteritis be fatal?
Vomiting and diarrhea can cause serious fluid and electrolyte losses, and the underlying cause may be life-threatening. Severe dehydration can strain the kidneys and lead to organ failure. Seek prompt care for warning signs, and emergency care for severe illness or difficulty standing or walking.
