Yes, dogs can eat a small amount of fresh pear flesh as an occasional treat. Wash the pear, remove the seeds and core, then cut the flesh into bite-sized pieces and supervise your dog while it eats. Start with a small amount and watch for stomach upset.

Which parts of a pear can dogs eat?

Dogs can have a little plain pear flesh as a treat, but pear is not a dietary staple. The American Kennel Club and Pet Poison Helpline describe pear fruit as suitable for pets when offered in moderation.

Remove the seeds and core before serving. The American Kennel Club warns that pear seeds contain traces of cyanide and can pose a choking risk; VCA’s general produce guidance recommends removing seeds and cores to reduce choking and blockage risks. Do not leave the core where your dog can reach it.

Pear part or form Guidance

How to prepare pear for your dog

  1. Wash the pear before cutting it.
  2. Remove the seeds and core.
  3. Cut the flesh into small, bite-sized pieces appropriate for your dog.
  4. Offer a few pieces and supervise your dog while it eats.
  5. Watch for stomach upset or other concerning changes, especially when introducing pear for the first time.

VCA’s general produce guidance also recommends washing produce, introducing new foods one at a time, and monitoring for upset or sensitivities.

How much pear can a dog eat?

There is no single serving size that fits every dog. The appropriate amount depends on factors such as the dog’s size, health, and the rest of its diet. The American Kennel Club gives a general guideline that treats should make up no more than 10% of a dog’s daily food intake; it notes that one slice may be enough for a small dog. This is general treat guidance, not a pear-specific serving prescription.

Keep pear portions small and infrequent. Too much may upset your dog’s stomach, and pear should not replace a balanced diet.

What if a dog ate pear seeds, the core, or too much pear?

The available guidance warns against feeding seeds and core but does not establish a pear-specific dose threshold or treatment plan for accidental ingestion. If your dog ate a substantial amount, is choking, or shows concerning symptoms, contact a veterinarian for individualized advice. Do not assume that a particular amount is safe based on this article.

When should you ask a veterinarian?

Ask your veterinarian before changing your dog’s diet if your dog has an existing health condition or dietary restrictions. Contact a veterinarian if your dog has a reaction after eating pear or if you are concerned about an accidental ingestion.
