Long-haired cats have coats that range from silky and flowing to dense or curly, so their grooming needs are not all the same. Regular brushing or combing is an important part of care, and Cornell Feline Health Center recommends getting cats used to daily brushing and combing to help minimize hairballs and their complications. Below are 22 long-haired breeds or longhair varieties to explore; registry lists and naming conventions differ, so this is an inspiration guide rather than a universal official roster.

A fluffy coat does not prove pedigree. A mixed-breed cat with a long coat is commonly described as a domestic longhair, and appearance alone cannot establish ancestry. When documentation matters, look to pedigree records. Cornell Feline Health Center and the breed directories of CFA and TICA provide background on coat care and breed descriptions.

22 long-haired cat breeds

Breed descriptions below summarize familiar appearances and tendencies, not guarantees about an individual cat. CFA and TICA do not always group or name coat varieties in the same way; check the relevant registry for its current classification. TICA breed standards list longhair varieties explicitly for some breeds.

1. American Bobtail

The American Bobtail is known for its naturally short tail. Longhair and shorthair varieties are listed in some breed directories. Coat length and texture can vary, so assess the individual cat’s grooming needs rather than relying on the breed name alone.

What owning a long-haired cat requires

Coat length is only one part of grooming needs: texture and density matter too. Cornell recommends regular brushing or combing to help keep a cat’s coat clean and help owners notice skin changes. It also recommends getting a cat accustomed to daily brushing and combing to help minimize hairballs and their complications. Longhaired cats, including Persians and Maine Coons, may be at greater risk of hairball complications than shorthaired cats, but risk is not a diagnosis or guarantee. See Cornell’s grooming guidance and hairball guidance.

Build a regular brushing routine

Use a comb or brush suitable for the cat’s coat, work gently, and check the skin as you groom. If a cat will not tolerate home brushing, Cornell notes that a veterinarian or reputable groomer may help. Individual needs vary; ask a veterinarian or groomer to recommend a suitable routine and tools.

Get help with mats

Do not cut a tight mat with scissors: it can sit close to the skin, making accidental injury possible. Avoid pulling or forcing a comb through a painful knot. Ask a veterinarian or reputable groomer for help with mats that are tight, widespread, stubborn, or painful.

aumuca Undercoat Rake for Dogs, Deshedding & Dematting Comb for Cats, Horse
  • UNDERCOAT RAKE FOR DOGS WITH DOUBLE COATS - One row of rounded teeth reaches past the topcoat and lifts loose undercoat out in one pass. An undercoat brush for dogs, dog deshedding brush, dog rake brush for shedding and daily dog shedding tool in one.
  • BUILT FOR HEAVY SHEDDERS - German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Husky, Pomeranian, Corgi and Shih Tzu coats drop undercoat year round, and this deshedding tool for dogs works through a thick double coat without digging into skin. A dog grooming brush too.
  • DEMATTING TOOL FOR MATS AND TANGLES - Work slowly through mats behind the ears, chest and legs and they break apart instead of pulling. A dematting comb for dogs, dog mat remover and cat hair detangler for long hair dog and cat coats alike.
  • ONE ROW, ROUNDED TIPS, GENTLE ON SKIN - A single row means fewer teeth dragging at once than a double-sided rake, and every rounded tip stays comfortable on sensitive skin. A snap-on blade cover keeps the stainless metal edge safe between uses.
  • CATS, RABBITS AND HORSES TOO - Light at 1.5 ounces with a 2.2-inch head, this deshedding dog brush moves easily from a shedding dog to a matted cat, a rabbit or a horse. One pet grooming tool and pet hair remover for every coat in the house.

Use bathing only when appropriate

Do not assume every longhaired cat needs frequent baths. If a cat’s coat or skin has a persistent problem, ask a veterinarian for advice instead of relying on repeated bathing to address a possible medical issue.

Breed versus “fluffy cat”

A long coat or distinctive color does not identify a cat’s breed. A mixed-breed cat with a long coat is commonly described as a domestic longhair. If breed identity matters, rely on pedigree records rather than visual guesses. For context on breed naming and coat varieties, compare the CFA breed directory with TICA’s directory.

How to choose among them

  • Compare coat care: Long, silky, dense, and curly coats can have different grooming needs. Ask about the individual cat’s coat and routine.
  • Consider temperament and activity: Breed profiles can offer a starting point, but meet the specific cat and consider its needs and your household.
  • Think about your routine: Regular brushing or combing is an important commitment. Choose a cat whose care needs fit the time and support you can provide.
  • Account for allergies: No breed is guaranteed hypoallergenic. Spend time with a specific cat if allergies are a concern.
  • Check welfare and documentation: Ask about health considerations and pedigree records where relevant; appearance alone is not evidence of ancestry.

A simple grooming routine

  1. Choose a calm time and let the cat approach the comb or brush.
  2. Start with a small area and use gentle strokes suited to the coat.
  3. Pause if the cat shows discomfort or distress; build the routine gradually.
  4. Check the coat and skin as you groom, noting any knots or changes.
  5. Ask a veterinarian or reputable groomer for help if the cat will not tolerate grooming or has a difficult mat.

FAQ

What are the long-haired cat breeds?

Examples include the Persian, Maine Coon, Birman, Ragdoll, Somali, and Norwegian Forest Cat, along with longhair varieties of other breeds. Registry rosters and naming conventions differ, so there is no single universal list in this guide.

Which long-haired cats are easiest to groom?

Grooming effort depends on coat texture and density as well as the individual cat, not just the breed name. Ask a reputable breeder, shelter, veterinarian, or groomer about the particular cat’s coat and care needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are long-haired cats hard to care for?

They can require regular brushing or combing, and Cornell recommends daily grooming to help minimize hairballs and their complications. The workload varies with coat texture, density, and the cat’s tolerance for grooming.

Are any long-haired cat breeds hypoallergenic?

No breed is guaranteed hypoallergenic or allergen-free. If allergies are a concern, spend time with a particular cat before adopting.

Is a fluffy shelter cat a Maine Coon or another specific breed?

Not necessarily. A long coat does not prove pedigree; a mixed-breed longhaired cat is commonly described as a domestic longhair. Pedigree records are needed when ancestry matters.

The bottom line

Choose a long-haired cat for its individual needs and personality as well as its appearance. Coat texture and density affect grooming, and regular brushing or combing is a meaningful part of care. Whether you adopt a domestic longhair or consider a pedigreed cat, ask about its specific care needs and seek veterinary or grooming help when needed.
