There is no single typical size for trout: it depends on the species and population. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) gives normal adult weights of 1–2 kg for wild brown and brook trout, and about 2–3 kg for rainbow trout; those broad reference figures are not promises about every fish. Reported biological maxima and angling records describe exceptional fish, not ordinary catches.
For a practical comparison, start with the species and its form, then consider the habitat and the kind of size figure being reported. A published maximum, a regional record, and an IGFA length record are different measures.
Trout size at a glance
| Species or form | Normal adult reference | Reported maximum or record example | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brown trout, river form | 1–2 kg (FAO) | 100 cm total length and 20 kg (FAO-reported maximum) | Brown trout also have lake and sea forms, whose figures differ. |
| Brook trout | 1–2 kg in the wild (FAO) | 86 cm total length and 9.39 kg (FAO-reported maximum) | Ontario’s regional page lists 15–40 cm (6–16 in) and 0.45–1.36 kg (1–3 lb); it reports an Ontario record of 6.6 kg (14.5 lb). |
| Rainbow trout | About 2–3 kg (FAO) | 120 cm and 25.4 kg (FAO-reported maximum) | FAO describes rainbow trout as cold-water fish; habitat and food can affect their color and shape. |
| Brown trout, lake form | 1–2 kg (FAO) | 140 cm standard length and 50 kg (FAO-reported maximum) | This is a form of Salmo trutta, not the North American lake trout. |
| Brown trout, sea form | Not specified here | 140 cm total length and 50 kg (FAO-reported maximum) | Do not compare this length directly with the lake-form standard-length figure. |
| Cutthroat trout | Not specified here | 83 cm IGFA All-Tackle Length Fly World Record example | Bob Gaines’s fish was caught at Pyramid Lake, Nevada, on March 18, 2026. This is a category-specific length record, not a weight record or species maximum. |
The FAO manual reports the normal adult and maximum figures above, citing Froese and Pauly (2009). Maxima are exceptional reported values, not typical adult sizes. Ontario’s brook trout figures are regional, and the page was inaccessible in the research pass, so they should not be generalized beyond Ontario.
How big is a typical trout?
“Trout” includes different species and forms, so a single length range can mislead. FAO’s broad normal adult weight references are 1–2 kg for wild brown trout, 1–2 kg for brook trout, and about 2–3 kg for rainbow trout. The dossier does not establish a universal typical length for these species.

Local fisheries can differ from those broad references. For example, Ontario’s brook trout page lists a regional size range of 15–40 cm (6–16 in). Treat a local agency description as a guide to that region, not as a global rule.
Size by trout species
Brook trout
Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) are chars, not members of the same genus as brown and rainbow trout. FAO gives a normal wild adult weight of 1–2 kg and reports a maximum of 86 cm total length and 9.39 kg, citing Froese and Pauly (2009). Those maximum figures are not representative of ordinary fish.
Ontario’s regional page lists brook trout at 15–40 cm (6–16 in) and 0.45–1.36 kg (1–3 lb), with a provincial record of 6.6 kg (14.5 lb). The page could not be opened during research, so use these as Ontario-specific figures only.
Brown trout
Brown trout (Salmo trutta) occur in river, lake, and sea forms. FAO gives a normal adult weight of 1–2 kg for wild brown trout and a reported river-form maximum of 100 cm total length and 20 kg. The manual cites Froese and Pauly (2009) for these figures.

FAO reports larger maxima for the lake and sea forms: 140 cm and 50 kg for each. The lake-form length is standard length, while the sea-form length is total length; these measurements are not directly interchangeable. Habitat and food can affect fish, but these figures should not be read as expected sizes for every lake or sea population.
Rainbow trout
Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) have a normal adult weight of about 2–3 kg in the FAO manual. Its cited reported maximum is 120 cm and 25.4 kg. These are broad reference and maximum figures, respectively—not a local catch forecast.
FAO describes rainbow trout as cold-water fish native to cold-water rivers and lakes of Pacific North America and Asia. It notes that habitat and food affect the species’ color and shape; the available research does not establish a precise habitat-to-size formula for wild rainbow trout.
Lake trout: a naming distinction
The name “lake trout” can refer to two different fish in the FAO material. North American lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush, are chars. FAO also uses “lake trout” for the lake form of brown trout, Salmo trutta m. lacustris. These are not the same species, so check which fish a size claim describes.

Why can trout sizes differ?
Species and population
Brown, brook, and rainbow trout are distinct species, and brook trout belong to the char subgroup. Brown trout also have river, lake, and sea forms. A size range for one species or form should not be applied automatically to another.
Habitat and food
Habitat and food affect trout, but the available FAO material does not support one precise formula for predicting size from a waterbody. Its discussion notes effects on rainbow trout color and shape, and distinguishes brown trout forms associated with river, lake, and sea habitats. Treat habitat as context, not a guarantee of a particular size.
Typical size, maximum size, and record size are different
- Normal adult size: A broad reference for ordinary adults, such as the FAO weight figures. It does not describe every population.
- Reported biological maximum: An exceptional length or weight reported in a source. Check the species or form and the length convention.
- Regional record: A fish recorded under a particular jurisdiction’s rules, such as Ontario’s reported brook trout record.
- Angling record: A catch accepted in a specific organization’s category under its documentation and measurement rules.
For example, FAO reports a rainbow trout maximum of 120 cm and 25.4 kg, while its normal adult reference is about 2–3 kg. One is a reported maximum; the other is a broad adult reference.
How trout records are measured
The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) separates all-tackle, line-class, tippet-class, and length-based records. Under its rules, length-record fish are measured on a flat surface with the official IGFA measuring device, from the most forward part of the snout to the rear center edge of the tail, in centimeters.

IGFA weight claims require a scale certified within the prior 12 months, and estimated weights are not accepted. A generic measuring board should not be described as IGFA-approved unless that is verified.
IGFA’s July 2026 update listed Bob Gaines’s 83 cm cutthroat trout, caught at Pyramid Lake, Nevada, on March 18, 2026, as an All-Tackle Length Fly World Record. That is a length record in a specific category—not a weight record or a maximum size for all cutthroat trout. Record status can change, so check the IGFA records before publication or relying on a current claim.

How big is a brook trout?
FAO gives a normal wild adult weight of 1–2 kg and a reported maximum of 86 cm total length and 9.39 kg. Ontario’s regional reference lists 15–40 cm (6–16 in) and 0.45–1.36 kg (1–3 lb); those figures are specific to that province.
How big is a rainbow trout?
FAO gives a normal adult weight of about 2–3 kg and reports a maximum of 120 cm and 25.4 kg. These are broad reference figures, not a prediction for a particular fishery.
Is a lake trout the same as a lake-form brown trout?
No. North American lake trout are Salvelinus namaycush, a char. A lake-form brown trout is a form of Salmo trutta. The shared name can cause confusion when comparing size reports.
What is the record trout?
There is no single answer without specifying the record organization, category, and species. IGFA’s July 2026 update listed an 83 cm cutthroat trout from Pyramid Lake as an All-Tackle Length Fly World Record. That is a length record, not a weight record or species maximum.
