A Video Captures the Florida Skunk Ape—but What’s Really Behind It?

Dave Shealy’s widely circulated Skunk Ape video was filmed in 2000, and its distant, grainy figure remains unidentified. A costume or mistaken wildlife identification are possibilities, not confirmed explanations—and the footage does not prove a new species.

Dave Shealy’s widely circulated Florida Skunk Ape video dates to July 2000, not to a new capture. It shows a distant, grainy figure moving through swamp vegetation, but the footage does not establish what the figure is or prove that an undiscovered species exists. A Smithsonian reporter interpreted it as a person in a gorilla suit; that is an assessment, not a confirmed identification.

What the video shows—and what it cannot show

Smithsonian Magazine describes Shealy’s daytime footage as grainy and filmed from hundreds of feet away. It shows a distant figure moving through swamp vegetation and running away. The distance and image quality make it difficult to identify the subject reliably.

Shealy interpreted the figure as a Skunk Ape and argued that its movement through water supported his view. Smithsonian reporter Joseph Stromberg offered a different interpretation, writing that it was “extremely hard to watch this video and see anything but a guy in a gorilla suit, hurrying across the swamp.” That is the reporter’s opinion, not a forensic finding that the subject was a person in costume.

Big Cypress Preserve public affairs officer Bob DeGross told Smithsonian: “But there has never been a substantiated sighting of the skunk ape that was verified by National Park Service wildlife staff.” This describes the preserve staff’s verification record; it does not establish that witnesses are lying or identify the figure in Shealy’s video.

Why the video is not a new discovery

The footage most associated with the Skunk Ape story was filmed by Dave Shealy in July 2000 in the Big Cypress area. Its continued circulation, including in later coverage, should not be confused with a newly recorded sighting or new authentication.

The Skunk Ape is a regional legend associated with the Everglades and Big Cypress. Reports and claims include sightings, photographs, tracks, and video. Those materials document the history of the legend and its claims, but they do not by themselves verify a living species.

What might explain the figure?

Possibility What the sources support What remains unresolved
A person in a costume Smithsonian reporter Joseph Stromberg said the video looked to him like a person in a gorilla suit. This is a viewer’s interpretation, not a confirmed identification.
A known animal A 2026 ClickOrlando report relays an FWC spokesperson’s view that some reports may involve people mistaking wild hogs or bears for the creature. This general possibility does not identify the figure in Shealy’s video.
An escaped or released primate Smithsonian discusses this as one possible broader explanation for some Florida reports. The source does not establish that a primate explains this particular footage.
An unknown animal The video is one of the claims associated with the Skunk Ape legend. The reviewed sources do not verify the figure as an undiscovered species.

Distance, graininess, and vegetation limit what viewers can infer from the recording. The responsible conclusion is that the figure’s identity remains unresolved, not that any one explanation has been proven.

How to assess claims about the Skunk Ape

  1. Separate the recording from its interpretation. The video shows a figure; calling it a Skunk Ape is Shealy’s interpretation.
  2. Check whether a source identifies this specific figure. General explanations for sightings, such as mistaken identification of wildlife, are not proof about this clip.
  3. Look for independent verification. The preserve official quoted by Smithsonian said its wildlife staff had not verified a substantiated Skunk Ape sighting.
  4. Keep claims distinct from evidence. Reports, footprint claims, and photographs are part of the legend’s history, but the reviewed sources do not establish a species.

Reporting real wildlife

If you encounter a real wildlife conflict or nuisance animal in Florida, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s sightings and reporting page is a practical starting point. It is a directory for wildlife incidents and reporting, not a Skunk Ape evidence registry. Do not approach, feed, or harass wildlife to obtain a recording.

Could a known animal be mistaken for a Skunk Ape?

A 2026 ClickOrlando report relays an FWC spokesperson’s view that some reports could involve people mistaking wild hogs or bears for the creature. That general possibility does not establish what appears in the 2000 video.

The measured conclusion

Shealy’s July 2000 footage is a longstanding part of the Skunk Ape story, but its distant, grainy figure has not been conclusively identified. A person in a costume is one interpretation; mistaken identification of known animals is a general possibility for some reports. Neither the clip nor the reviewed sources verify the figure as a new species.
