If you plan to participate, try a comfortable dog costume at home before the event. Your dog should be able to breathe, see, walk, sit, eliminate, and communicate normally. Remove the costume if your dog shows distress, overheating, repeated scratching, freezing, or attempts to escape it.

2. Test the costume in advance
- Make sure it does not tighten around your dog’s neck or chest.
- Keep your dog’s eyes, nose, mouth, ears, legs, and tail as unrestricted as possible.
- Avoid loose pieces your dog could chew or swallow.
- Practice for short periods indoors, rewarding calm behavior.
- Do not force your dog to wear clothing it clearly dislikes.
3. Bring basic supplies
A secure leash, identification, water, and waste bags are sensible supplies for a crowded outdoor event. These are preparation recommendations, not stated entry requirements. Small dog training treats can help with costume practice, but do not use them to coax a frightened dog into an overwhelming situation.
4. Consider whether your dog enjoys crowds
A Manhattan parade can mean unfamiliar dogs, people, costumes, noise, and crowded walking areas. A dog that is comfortable on quiet walks may still become overstimulated. Consider attending without your dog or choosing a smaller local event if your dog is fearful, reactive, elderly, ill, or easily overwhelmed.
5. Plan for breaks and an exit
Give your dog room to pause away from the densest crowd and watch for signs of distress, such as panting that does not settle, trembling, tucked posture, or frantic pulling. Leave if your dog is uncomfortable. Your dog’s welfare matters more than a costume, prize, or photograph.
