Trupanion and Healthy Paws have distinct deductible and payout-limit features described in the research; ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, Lemonade, Fetch, and Nationwide are comparison candidates whose current cat plans and terms should be checked for your location.
There is no verified universal ranking or current like-for-like price comparison for these six providers. Compare quotes using the same cat details and coverage settings, then read the policy issued in your state before enrolling.
Six cat insurers to compare
This shortlist identifies providers to investigate, not a ranking. The comparison reflects the research available on October 7, 2026; insurer summaries are not substitutes for current state-specific policy documents.
| Provider | What the research supports | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Trupanion | Trupanion describes 90% reimbursement, a $0–$1,000 per-condition deductible that applies for the life of that condition, no annual or lifetime payout limit, and VetDirect Pay at participating clinics. | State policy terms, quote, waiting periods, exclusions, and whether the clinic has the required software and veterinarian approval for direct payment. |
| Healthy Paws | Its comparison page describes an annual deductible, annual payout-limit choices from $5,000 to unlimited, and a direct-pay option. | Available choices, direct-pay mechanics, eligibility, and the terms in your state’s policy. |
| ASPCA Pet Health Insurance | Its consumer guidance recommends checking hereditary and behavioral conditions, prescription food and supplements, exam fees, exclusions, and enrollment requirements. | Current cat-plan terms, state availability, eligibility, and the exact pre-existing-condition definition. Its described 180-day cured-condition window applies to its own guidance, not all insurers. |
| Lemonade | Listed as a provider in ASPCA’s comparison material; this research did not independently verify its current cat-plan details by state. | Whether cat coverage is available in your state, plus limits, deductible choices, exclusions, and quote terms. |
| Fetch | Listed as a provider in ASPCA’s comparison material; this research does not establish a current plan-specific advantage. | Current availability, covered expenses, deductible and limit choices, waiting periods, and policy terms. |
| Nationwide | Listed as a provider in ASPCA’s comparison material; this research does not verify a current cat-product advantage. | Current cat-product availability, eligibility, coverage, and state-specific terms. |
How to compare the options
Deductible structure
An annual deductible generally resets by policy year. Trupanion describes a per-condition deductible that does not reset annually for the same condition. The difference matters if your cat needs ongoing care or develops multiple unrelated conditions. Healthy Paws describes an annual deductible; confirm the exact mechanics in the policy you are offered.

#1 Best Overall
Reimbursement and payout limits
Compare the reimbursement percentage and whether the policy has an annual, per-condition, or lifetime payout limit. Trupanion describes no annual or lifetime limit. Healthy Paws describes annual payout choices from $5,000 to unlimited. These features do not make every expense eligible: exclusions, waiting periods, deductibles, and reimbursement rules still apply.
Covered care and exclusions
Read the contract for hereditary and congenital conditions, dental care, behavioral care, exam fees, prescription medications, prescription food and supplements, and alternative treatments. ASPCA’s consumer guidance specifically recommends asking about these areas. Do not assume that a feature named in marketing materials is included in every plan or state.

Paying the veterinarian
Many policies reimburse the owner after the owner pays the veterinarian. Trupanion describes VetDirect Pay, which may pay a participating clinic directly when the clinic has the required software and the veterinarian approves. Healthy Paws also describes a direct-pay option. Confirm the process with both the insurer and your veterinary clinic; do not assume every clinic can accept direct payment.
Pre-existing conditions and waiting periods
Insurers may exclude an injury or illness that existed or showed signs before coverage began or during a waiting period. A diagnosis made after enrollment does not necessarily make a condition eligible if signs appeared earlier. Definitions and waiting periods vary by policy.

Rank #3
ASPCA describes a 180-day period without symptoms or treatment for a cured-condition exception in its own guidance. That is not a universal rule. Check whether a policy has an exception and how it defines a cured condition before relying on one.
A practical way to choose
- Decide what risk you want to cover. Consider unexpected illness and injury, ongoing treatment, or limiting the amount you must pay at the clinic before reimbursement.
- Request quotes using your cat’s actual details. Use the same age, breed, location, and medical history for each quote. Premiums and eligibility can vary with those details and the coverage selections.
- Make the quotes comparable. Match deductible type and amount, reimbursement percentage, payout limit, and covered benefits as closely as possible.
- Check state availability and eligibility. Confirm that the insurer offers the relevant cat product where you live and that your cat meets its enrollment requirements.
- Read the issued policy and declarations. Review definitions, waiting periods, exclusions, renewal terms, and coverage for the conditions and services that matter to you.
- Confirm payment mechanics. If direct payment is important, ask the insurer and your clinic how approval, timing, and any remaining balance work.

How should I compare cat insurance quotes?
Use the same cat details and compare deductible type, reimbursement percentage, payout limit, covered expenses, exclusions, and payment process. Then review the policy issued for your state.
Is unlimited coverage always the best choice?
Not necessarily. An unlimited payout limit may matter for expensive eligible treatment, but it does not remove deductibles, exclusions, waiting periods, or reimbursement rules. Consider the full policy and quote against your budget and priorities.
