Parrot lifespans vary widely by species: World Parrot Trust profiles list budgerigars at 15 years, cockatiels at 20 years, and African greys at 50–60 years. These are source-specific profile figures, not promises for an individual bird or directly comparable life-expectancy statistics. Larger parrot species generally live longer than smaller ones, but size alone is not a precise predictor.
“Parrot” covers many species with different life histories and care needs. When comparing lifespan claims, check whether a figure is a species-profile longevity estimate, a study’s life expectancy or median, an average maximum, or an exceptional record.
Parrot lifespan at a glance
| Species or group | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Budgerigar | 15 years | World Parrot Trust species-profile longevity figure |
| Cockatiel | 20 years | World Parrot Trust species-profile longevity figure |
| African grey | 50–60 years | World Parrot Trust species-profile longevity range |
| Chestnut-fronted macaw | 30+ years | World Parrot Trust species-profile figure; not a guaranteed minimum |
| Blue-throated macaw | 50+ years | World Parrot Trust species-profile figure |
| Great green macaw | 60 years | World Parrot Trust species-profile figure |
| Moluccan cockatoo | 92 years | Exceptional individual record reported in the World Parrot Trust’s 2012 summary, not a normal expectation |
The figures come from World Parrot Trust species profiles and research summaries; they are not a single standardized set of measurements. The 92-year-old Moluccan cockatoo is an exceptional record, not a typical lifespan. The World Parrot Trust’s 2022 article describes a zoo-record study estimating life expectancy for 244 parrot species, approximately two-thirds of all parrot species. That coverage figure describes the study, not an individual bird’s lifespan.
How long do different parrot species live?
Species matters more than a broad label such as “parrot.” The World Parrot Trust profiles give examples ranging from 15 years for budgerigars to 50–60 years for African greys. Its macaw examples range from 30+ years for chestnut-fronted macaws to 60 years for great green macaws. These are published profile figures, not guarantees or a uniform measure of expected lifespan.

Other research comparisons use different measures. The World Parrot Trust’s longevity research summary reports that larger parrot species generally live longer than smaller ones, but estimates the difference between large- and small-bodied parrots might be only a decade. In its comparison of six parrot groups, cockatoos had the highest average maximum lifespan, while macaws and Amazons had higher average median lifespans. Which group appears longest-lived therefore depends on the measure being compared.
Why published lifespan numbers conflict
A species-profile figure, a study’s median or life expectancy, an average maximum, and a record age answer different questions. A median describes the midpoint of a dataset; it is not an oldest-known age. Likewise, an exceptional record should not be presented as an ordinary expectation.
The World Parrot Trust’s 2022 article describes a study using zoo records to estimate life expectancy across 244 species. That broader measure is distinct from one outlying maximum age. The available sources do not provide consistent paired wild and captive lifespan ranges for every species, so those figures should not be inferred or combined.
