Choose a mason bee house with smooth, closed-back tunnels that can be removed, opened, or cleaned, and mount it securely where it is protected from rain and gets morning sun when practical. Do not dismantle or clean used nest material while bees or other occupants are still inside; wait for emergence, using a sheltered emergence box if needed. A bee house is optional habitat, not a guarantee of conservation benefit or healthy bees.

Choose a cleanable design

Cleanability should shape your choice from the start. University of Minnesota Extension recommends houses with removable or cleanable tunnels. NC State Extension also describes stacked grooved boards that expose tunnels for inspection when the boards are separated. Neither design guarantees healthy bees, but both make it possible to maintain or retire used nesting material.

Compare designs by checking whether they have:

  • Accessible tunnels: Tunnels should be removable, openable, or otherwise cleanable.
  • Smooth interiors and entrances: Rough or splintery cavities may be rejected.
  • Closed backs: New Hampshire Extension notes that most mason bees will not nest in open-ended cavities.
  • Dimensions suited to the intended bee: Tunnel sizes and depths vary by bee and design, so avoid treating one measurement as universal.
  • Weather protection and secure mounting: The house should stay anchored and keep rain out.

For a commercially available house, University of Minnesota Extension recommends one at least eight inches deep with removable or cleanable tunnels. New Hampshire Extension gives different dimensions for drilled nest boxes: holes can range from about 1/8 to 1/2 inch, with 5/16 inch for blue orchard bees; it recommends 3–5 inches of depth for narrow holes and greater depth for wider holes. These are recommendations for different contexts, not a single standard. Check compatibility with the bee and nesting system you have in mind.

Practical options include a mason bee house with cleanable tunnels or compatible replacement mason bee nesting tubes. Check sizing before buying. The important feature is access for inspection and maintenance, not a particular material or product format.

Where should you hang the nest box?

Anchor the house firmly in a sheltered location. Where practical, face the entrance east or southeast for morning sun and afternoon shade. Local conditions and bee species can affect placement, so treat this as a starting point rather than a universal rule.

  • Provide a roof or overhang, or angle the tunnels slightly downward, to reduce rain entry.
  • Choose a stable mounting surface and keep the house away from vegetation, as University of Minnesota Extension advises.
  • Place it near a recognizable landmark that can help bees find their way back.
  • Keep the entrance clear and avoid locations exposed to driving rain.

How big should I make the holes?

Size holes for the bee you intend to support; there is no single tunnel dimension for every mason bee. New Hampshire Extension gives a range of approximately 1/8 to 1/2 inch for drilled nest boxes and identifies 5/16 inch for the blue orchard bee. It recommends 3–5 inches of depth for narrow holes and greater depth for wider ones. University of Minnesota Extension’s guidance for a commercially available house instead recommends a house at least eight inches deep with removable or cleanable tunnels.

These measurements describe different recommendations and house designs. Use the guidance that matches your intended bee and structure, and make sure tunnels are smooth and closed at the back.

Understand the tradeoffs

Artificial nests can offer nesting cavities, but they are not automatically a conservation benefit. University of Minnesota Extension cautions that artificial nests may support more non-native bees and parasites than natural nesting areas. Treat a bee house as one optional habitat feature, and do not judge its success only by how many insects enter it.

Penn State Extension warns that visible bee activity does not reveal how prevalent parasites and fungi may be in nesting materials. A house therefore needs a plan for inspection and maintenance, not just installation.

Maintain nests without harming occupants

Never clean or dismantle occupied nesting material. NC State Extension explains that the first step toward cleaning used nests is to let residents emerge. If you need to move used material to protect it while occupants develop, place it in an opaque emergence box with one or a few bee-sized exits near the top, sheltered under an overhanging lid. Follow regional guidance for the species and system you are managing.

  1. Wait for emergence. Do not open or clean nesting material while residents remain inside.
  2. Use an emergence box if needed. Place occupied material in an opaque, sheltered box with bee-sized exits near the top, following NC State Extension guidance.
  3. Clean or retire used material after emergence. NC State Extension recommends that ordinary users disinfect or retire nesting materials every one to three years. This is not a universal interval for every species or managed operation.
  4. Inspect and reset the house. Keep the structure secure and protected from rain, and use cleanable or replaceable nesting material.

Common mistakes

Mistake Why it matters Better approach
Choosing sealed, inaccessible cavities You cannot inspect or maintain the nesting material. Choose removable or cleanable tunnels, or a design that opens for inspection.
Using rough or open-ended tunnels Rough interiors may be rejected, and most mason bees will not use open-ended cavities. Use smooth tunnels with closed backs.
Exposing tunnels to rain Rain can enter the nesting cavities. Add an overhang or angle the tunnels slightly downward.
Cleaning before occupants emerge Residents are still inside the nest material. Wait for emergence; use a sheltered emergence box if necessary.
Assuming occupancy proves nest health Visible activity does not show how many parasites or fungi may be present. Plan for inspection and appropriate cleaning or retirement after emergence.
Treating an artificial nest as guaranteed conservation Artificial nests may also support non-native bees and parasites. Use a bee house as optional habitat and consider its tradeoffs.

FAQ

How big should I make the holes?

It depends on the bee and the box design. New Hampshire Extension gives approximately 1/8 to 1/2 inch for drilled nest boxes and identifies 5/16 inch for blue orchard bees; use the matching depth guidance rather than assuming one size fits all.

Where should I hang the nest box?

Anchor it securely in a sheltered spot. East or southeast exposure can provide morning sun and afternoon shade; protect the openings from rain and keep the house away from vegetation.

How often should I clean or replace nesting material?

NC State Extension recommends disinfecting or retiring materials every one to three years for ordinary users. The appropriate approach can vary by species and management system, so follow regional guidance.

Does a mason bee house always help native bees?

No. University of Minnesota Extension cautions that artificial nests may support more non-native bees and parasites than natural nesting areas. A house is optional habitat, not a guaranteed conservation benefit.

The Bottom Line

Set up a mason bee house that is secure, sheltered from rain, and built with smooth, closed-back tunnels you can access for maintenance. Match tunnel dimensions to the intended bee, and wait until all occupants have emerged before cleaning or retiring used material.
