Kabosu, the Shiba Inu whose image became the Doge meme and later Dogecoin’s emblem, died on May 24, 2024, at age 18, according to the Dogecoin Foundation and the Associated Press. She was Atsuko Sato’s companion, and her distinctive photograph became one of the internet’s best-known dog images.

Who was Kabosu?

Kabosu was a female Shiba Inu who lived with Atsuko Sato in Sakura, Japan. The Dogecoin Foundation says Sato rescued her from a puppy mill; the Associated Press reports that Sato adopted her from an animal shelter in 2008, attributing that detail to The Wall Street Journal. In short, Sato rescued and adopted Kabosu.

Although millions of people knew Kabosu as the face of an internet meme, she was first and foremost Sato’s companion. Sato shared photographs of her pets, giving the world an unplanned glimpse of a dog with a particularly memorable expression.

How did Kabosu become the Doge meme?

Kabosu’s expressive photograph spread online and became the defining image of the Doge meme, which reached broad internet prominence in 2013, according to the Dogecoin Foundation. In the image, Kabosu looks toward the camera with raised eyebrows and a sideways glance.

Doge posts typically paired a Shiba Inu photograph with short, colorful phrases written in deliberately informal English, often using Comic Sans-style lettering. Expressions such as “much wow” and “very excite” became part of the meme’s recognizable style. Kabosu’s face was frequently copied, remixed, and repurposed across internet culture.

Her photograph became a meme before it became associated with a cryptocurrency. Kabosu inspired the image and meme; she did not create Dogecoin.

What was Kabosu’s connection to Dogecoin?

Dogecoin launched in December 2013. The Dogecoin Foundation names software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as its creators and describes the coin as a light-hearted response to cryptocurrency’s popularity and profit-seeking.

Dogecoin used the Shiba Inu image associated with the meme for its emblem. Kabosu was the dog depicted in the source photograph, making her the visual inspiration for Dogecoin’s iconic canine image.

Kabosu did not create Dogecoin or participate in its development. Her photograph inspired the meme and the coin’s imagery; Markus and Palmer created the cryptocurrency.

Over time, Dogecoin developed a large online community and became one of the most recognizable cryptocurrencies. Kabosu’s image also remained associated with wider Doge culture, independently of the coin’s trading activity.

How did Kabosu die?

Kabosu died on May 24, 2024, at the reported age of 18. The Associated Press reported that she died in her sleep. The Dogecoin Foundation also announced her death that day and reported her age as 18.

The dossier does not establish Kabosu’s exact birth date, so it is best not to treat a specific date as confirmed. Kabosu should not be confused with Balltze, the Shiba Inu known online as Cheems, who died in 2023.

A memorial in Kabosu’s hometown

Kabosu’s legacy had already been commemorated in physical form before her death. The Dogecoin Foundation reports that Dogecoin and Doge communities raised almost $100,000 between November 2 and December 6, 2022, toward a bronze memorial in Furusato Square, Kabosu’s favorite park in Sakura.

The memorial was unveiled on November 2, 2023. It gives admirers a place to remember the dog behind an image that had otherwise existed mostly online.

More than a cryptocurrency logo

Kabosu’s story brings together three identities:

  • Companion animal: She was a rescued dog adopted by Atsuko Sato and loved as a member of her household.
  • Meme subject: Her photograph became one of the internet’s most recognizable images.
  • Cryptocurrency emblem: Her image became the Shiba Inu imagery used by Dogecoin after its December 2013 launch.

Reducing Kabosu to a crypto logo misses the part of her story that began before Dogecoin existed. Her rescue and adoption also give her story an animal-welfare dimension: she was given a home and became a source of joy for people around the world.

That does not mean every rescued animal will have a similar public story. It does show why adoption and responsible animal care matter. Kabosu’s global significance began with a home and a human being willing to give her one.

Kabosu’s lasting legacy

Kabosu became internationally famous through a photograph that moved from internet meme culture into the identity of a global cryptocurrency. Her image inspired the Doge meme and Dogecoin’s branding, while Markus and Palmer—not Kabosu or Sato—are identified as the coin’s creators.

Her death marked the end of her life, not the end of the affection associated with her image. People remember Kabosu through Sato’s photographs, the Doge meme, Dogecoin’s history, the Sakura memorial, and the broader message her story carries about rescue and adoption.

For all the attention given to the cryptocurrency that used her image, Kabosu’s most enduring legacy may be simpler: she was a much-loved dog whose ordinary life became meaningful to an extraordinary number of people.
