Fleas may emerge from stages already in the home or yard, arrive with another pet, a person or an infested item, or enter through an opening. The source is not always obvious: a flea seen after a trip or a new arrival may have already been developing in the environment.
The most common flea found on cats and in homes is the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis. It can feed on cats, dogs, wildlife, rodents, and people, although cats and dogs are important hosts for reproduction. Learn more about cat fleas from the CDC.
How fleas get to an indoor cat
Fleas do not need a cat to walk outdoors before they can reach it. The routes below can overlap, and fleas emerging from an existing home or yard population are an important source.
1. Fleas are already in the home or yard
Adult fleas live on a host, but their eggs fall into the environment. Eggs and other immature stages can develop in protected places such as carpets, under furniture, along baseboards, and on animal bedding. Pupae may wait until conditions favor adult emergence, then the newly emerged fleas can jump onto a cat.

This is an easy source to miss: a cat may appear to get fleas after boarding, a trip, or another change even though flea stages were already present. The Companion Animal Parasite Council’s flea guidance explains that newly emerged fleas from an infested environment are a primary source of infestations.
2. Another pet or an animal environment brings fleas close
A dog, cat, or other animal with outdoor access can carry adult fleas into the house. Pets can also encounter fleas through contact with other animals or in places those animals frequent, such as boarding facilities, shelters, veterinary settings, groomers, or another home with an infestation. Newly emerged fleas in an infested environment can also jump onto a host.
After adult fleas feed on a pet, they can mate and lay eggs. The eggs fall from the animal into carpets, furniture, bedding, floor cracks, and the places where pets rest. Every susceptible pet in the household may need an appropriate treatment plan. Treating only the cat that is scratching can allow the infestation to continue through another pet.
3. People or infested belongings carry fleas indoors
Fleas may be carried into a home on people or other pets, or on infested items such as used furniture, clothing, shoes, bags, blankets, or carriers. A visitor, a trip to a place with fleas, or a secondhand item can therefore be a possible exposure route.

A flea population already developing in the home or yard is another important possibility.
4. Fleas come in through an opening or from the yard
Fleas may enter through an open door or window. Outdoor shaded areas where pets rest can also support flea development, and wildlife can be a source of fleas in the yard. Fleas from these sources may reach an indoor cat even if it rarely or never goes outside.
If fleas return despite appropriate treatment of household pets, consider whether wildlife or rodents may be contributing around the building or yard. Look for signs near entry points, roof spaces, garages, crawl spaces, and outdoor areas where pets spend time. Professional pest control or wildlife exclusion may be appropriate when the source is inaccessible or cannot be safely removed.

Why you may not see fleas on your cat
Cats groom very effectively and may remove or swallow adult fleas before an owner notices them. A cat with flea allergy dermatitis can also develop intense itching from only a small number of bites.
Possible signs include:
- Scratching, biting, licking, or overgrooming
- Hair thinning or bald patches, often around the back, neck, belly, or tail base
- Small scabs, redness, inflammation, or sores from self-trauma
- Restlessness or sudden sensitivity when touched
- Visible fleas or dark, pepper-like particles called flea dirt
Flea dirt is digested blood. If a suspected particle dissolves into a reddish-brown stain when moistened, that supports—but does not by itself prove—the presence of flea dirt. Fleas or flea dirt may be easier to find by slowly parting the coat, particularly around the neck, back, belly, and tail base. Merck Veterinary Manual provides additional guidance on feline flea signs.
How to check an indoor cat
- Place the cat on or over a white sheet of paper or towel.
- Use a fine-toothed cat flea comb, working slowly through the coat.
- Pay particular attention to the neck, back, belly, and tail base.
- Inspect anything collected on the white surface for live fleas or dark debris.
- If debris is present, moisten it and look for a reddish-brown color.
A flea comb is a useful inspection tool, but a negative combing session does not rule out fleas. The cat may have groomed recently, or the infestation may be small. Persistent itching can also result from mites, ringworm, medication reactions, food allergy, environmental allergy, or bacterial skin disease. A veterinarian should evaluate ongoing or severe symptoms rather than relying on combing alone.
What fleas can do to an indoor cat
Flea bites can cause temporary irritation or flea allergy dermatitis. In a sensitive cat, even a small exposure may produce substantial itching and skin damage.
Heavy infestations can remove enough blood to cause anemia, especially in kittens, frail cats, or animals with other health problems. Severe anemia can be life-threatening.

A cat may acquire the flea tapeworm, Dipylidium caninum, by swallowing an infected flea while grooming. People can rarely become infected by swallowing an infected flea; children are reported more often in such cases. The FDA discusses flea-related risks and product safety.
Cat fleas can carry organisms associated with cat-scratch disease and flea-borne rickettsial disease. Flea-borne typhus is associated with infected fleas or flea dirt in particular settings. Risk varies by flea species, geography, and exposure, so a flea sighting does not mean that every person or pet in the home will develop a serious infection.

What to do if your indoor cat may have fleas
1. Contact your veterinarian for a cat-specific plan
Ask a veterinarian to recommend treatment and prevention based on the cat’s species, age, weight, health status, pregnancy or nursing status, other medications, other pets, and flea risk in your area. If you are considering cat flea prevention, follow the product label exactly and confirm that it is intended for cats of the correct age and weight.
Do not choose a product solely because it worked for another animal. Follow veterinary advice and the product label.

Do not substitute a dog product for a cat product. Some dog flea products may be poisonous to cats, and a cat can also be exposed by contact with a recently treated dog.
Use only a legitimate product labeled for the cat’s species, life stage, and weight class. Ask a veterinarian when the cat’s age, health, or other household animals make the choice uncertain. FDA explains how to identify approved or registered flea products.
3. Treat every susceptible pet when directed
If there are other cats, dogs, or susceptible animals in the household, ask the veterinarian whether each needs treatment. Treating one animal while leaving another untreated can maintain the flea life cycle. The CAPC flea guidance recommends treating all pets in a household to achieve control.
4. Clean the places where pets spend time
Vacuum frequently and thoroughly, concentrating on:

Established infestations may require sustained environmental control. Do not apply an indoor pesticide casually: use only a product labeled for the intended location, follow ventilation and re-entry instructions, and keep cats and other animals away exactly as directed. Ask a veterinarian or qualified pest professional about safety around pets. Cornell’s feline health guidance covers environmental control.
5. Expect delayed sightings
You may continue to see adult fleas after treating the cat because pupae are protected in the environment and can emerge when conditions favor them. The timing of the flea life cycle varies with conditions, so a new sighting does not by itself prove that exposure happened recently or that treatment failed.
However, continued or severe infestation, worsening skin disease, or fleas that persist despite following the veterinary plan should be reported to the veterinarian. One cleaning session or one dose should not be expected to eliminate every stage immediately.
When a flea problem is an emergency
Seek prompt veterinary care for a kitten or debilitated cat, pale or white gums, marked lethargy or weakness, rapid breathing, collapse, severe skin wounds, or a heavy visible infestation. These signs can indicate anemia or another serious illness.
If a cat may have been exposed to a dog flea product, permethrin, or another pesticide, contact a veterinarian or an animal poison service immediately. Do not wait for symptoms and do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically instructs you to do so.
A practical way to find the source
When fleas keep returning, consider the whole exposure pattern rather than asking only where the cat went. Make a short household checklist:
- Does any pet go outdoors, visit communal animal areas, or spend time with other animals?
- Has a visitor, used item, blanket, carrier, or piece of furniture entered the home?
- Are there signs of rodents or wildlife around the building or yard?
- Could fleas be entering through an open door or window?
- Where does each pet sleep, and which rooms have carpeting or upholstered furniture?
- Are all pets being treated under a coordinated veterinary plan?
This approach helps distinguish a new introduction from delayed emergence and identifies environmental areas that need attention.

FAQ
Can indoor-only cats get fleas without another pet in the house?
Yes. Fleas may already be developing in the home or yard, arrive on people or infested belongings, or enter through an opening. Another pet is a possible route, but it is not the only one.
Can fleas come in through an open door or window?
Yes. Fleas may enter through an open door or window, and fleas from outdoor shaded areas or wildlife activity in the yard can also contribute to exposure.
Can a person bring fleas into the house?
People may carry fleas indoors, and infested belongings such as used furniture or clothing can also bring them in. A flea population already present in the home or yard is another important possible source.
Why did my cat get fleas after boarding or a trip?
The timing does not prove that the exposure happened there. Flea stages may already have been present in the home and emerged later, or fleas may have come from the animal environment or an infested item.
What if I find no fleas but my cat is still scratching?
A negative combing session does not rule out fleas because cats may groom away evidence and allergic cats may react to very few bites. Other skin conditions can look similar. Persistent, severe, or worsening itching should be assessed by a veterinarian.
Can I use a flea treatment made for dogs on my cat?
No. Dog and cat products are not interchangeable, and some dog products may be poisonous to cats. Use only a product labeled for cats of the correct age and weight, and ask a veterinarian if you are unsure.
The Bottom Line
Indoor cats get fleas when fleas—or their animal hosts or hidden environmental stages—get indoors. Fleas may emerge from an existing home or yard population, arrive with animals, people, or infested items, or enter through an opening. Check the cat and its environment, involve a veterinarian, treat susceptible pets when directed, and clean pet resting areas thoroughly.
