Size, coat, shedding, temperament, and health are not guaranteed by the cross. Plan for daily engagement and activity, consistent training, regular grooming, and routine veterinary care.
There is no single standardized Yorkiepoo size or lifespan. Breed-profile estimates differ, so treat them as general guidance rather than promises for an individual dog.

What is a Yorkiepoo?
The Yorkiepoo—also spelled Yorkie-Poo or Yorkipoo—is produced by crossing a Yorkshire Terrier with a Toy or Miniature Poodle. The Poodle parent’s variety can affect size expectations, and inheritance varies, so the name does not describe one precisely standardized adult size.

Yorkshire Terriers are toy terriers with a long coat, while Poodles are active, intelligent dogs whose coats require regular brushing and clipping. A Yorkiepoo may inherit a combination of these traits, but appearance and behavior are not predictable enough to assume every dog will be alike.
Some have straighter coats; others have waves or tighter curls. Colors and adult proportions vary, too. Be cautious of sellers who guarantee adult weight, coat type, or temperament without explaining the parents’ sizes and the puppy’s growth history.
Are Yorkiepoos hypoallergenic?
No dog is completely hypoallergenic. Yorkiepoos may shed less than many dogs, particularly when they inherit a Poodle-influenced coat, but individual allergy responses differ. Allergens can come from dander, saliva, and skin oils, not simply visible hair.
If allergies are a concern, spend time with the specific dog and consult a medical professional before committing. Brushing, cleaning, and professional grooming may help manage hair and dander, but cannot guarantee an allergy-free household.

Yorkiepoos are often described as lively, affectionate, intelligent, playful, and people-oriented. They may also be independent or bark at unfamiliar people, animals, or sounds. Training, socialization, attention, and inherited traits all influence behavior.
Some individuals develop separation-related behaviors. Teach independence gradually: reward calm behavior, practice brief absences, and increase alone time slowly. If distress is severe, such as panic, self-injury, escape attempts, or prolonged vocalization, consult a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional.
Are Yorkiepoos good apartment dogs?
Often, yes, when the household can provide daily activity, mental stimulation, training, and reasonable noise management. Neighbors may find nuisance barking more difficult than a lack of yard space.
Identify barking triggers, reward quiet behavior, and avoid letting attention-seeking barking become the dog’s default way to get attention. Do not punish alarm barking; consider whether boredom, fear, pain, or separation distress is contributing.
Are Yorkiepoos good with children?
They can be, but their small bodies need protection from rough handling. Supervise interactions with young children, teach respectful handling, and give the dog a quiet retreat that children cannot enter. A frightened or hurt dog may snap defensively.

Do not choose a dog solely by breed label when its behavior and history are available. Early experiences, socialization, training, and health affect an individual dog’s behavior.
Exercise and mental enrichment
PetMD recommends about 30–60 minutes of daily exercise for Yorkiepoos, and Chewy describes roughly an hour of combined mental and physical activity as a guide. These are general recommendations, not individualized prescriptions. Puppies, seniors, dogs with health conditions, and dogs in extreme weather need an adjusted plan. Avoid repetitive high-impact activity, particularly if a dog has a history of patellar luxation.
Short activities distributed through the day can include:
- Walks with opportunities to sniff
- Gentle fetch or tug
- Brief reward-based training sessions
- Scent games, such as finding treats in safe locations
- Food puzzles and supervised interactive toys
- Calm, supervised activity with suitable dogs
A small-dog puzzle toy can provide food-based enrichment, but does not replace walks, training, play, or social contact. Choose a suitable, durable toy and supervise initial sessions.
Stop activity and contact a veterinarian promptly if your dog shows respiratory distress, fainting, repeated overheating, severe fatigue, persistent reluctance to move, or limping. Do not push puppies through strenuous repetitive exercise; seek veterinary guidance for dogs with joint or airway problems.
Training and socialization
Most Yorkiepoos respond well to reward-based training using praise, play, and small measured treats. Begin when the dog comes home, using short, engaging sessions that end before frustration sets in.
Useful early skills
- Responding to its name and coming when called in safe areas
- Polite leash walking and waiting at doors
- Settling on a mat or in a designated bed
- Accepting gentle restraint and handling
- Crate or confinement training when appropriate
- Leaving dropped objects alone
- Cooperating with brushing, nail care, ear checks, and toothbrushing
- Remaining calm during brief owner departures
Small dogs still benefit from practical boundaries and reliable safety behaviors. Avoid allowing attention-seeking barking to become the dog’s default way to get attention.

Socialization means gradual, positive exposure—not forcing a dog into frightening situations. Introduce people, safe and well-mannered dogs, household sounds, surfaces, grooming tools, car travel, and veterinary handling at a manageable pace. Avoid punishment-based methods that may increase fear or anxiety.
Yorkiepoo grooming and coat care
Frequent or daily brushing is a sensible default, especially for a longer, wavy, or curly coat. Hair can mat close to the skin. A shorter pet trim may reduce the workload but does not eliminate brushing.

A dog slicker brush is a practical tool for routine brushing. Use gentle strokes and reach through the coat rather than smoothing only the surface. Follow with a fine-toothed dog comb to check behind the ears, beneath the legs, around the collar, and near the tail.
Do not yank through mats. Painful grooming can make a dog fearful of handling, and severe mats may conceal irritated skin. Ask a groomer or veterinarian for help with tight, widespread, or skin-close mats. Introduce brushes and combs gradually, pairing brief touches with rewards.

Routine grooming schedule
- Brush: Frequently or daily, especially for longer or curlier coats.
- Professional grooming: Commonly every four to six weeks, depending on coat and haircut.
- Bathing: PetMD recommends about every four to six weeks or when needed, using dog-specific shampoo.
- Ears: Check regularly. Use a dog-approved cleaner when appropriate; never push cotton swabs into the ear canal.
- Nails: Trim regularly to prevent overgrowth, cracking, discomfort, and altered gait.
- Handling: Check paws, skin, eyes, ears, and mouth while rewarding cooperation.
A groomer is not a substitute for veterinary care. Painful, inflamed, foul-smelling, or repeatedly dirty ears need veterinary assessment rather than repeated home cleaning.
Dental care should be a priority
Small dogs can be prone to periodontal problems, making dental prevention important. Begin with calm mouth handling: touch the lips, briefly inspect the teeth, reward, and gradually introduce a pet toothbrush.
Daily brushing is preferable; PetMD recommends brushing at least two or three times weekly. Use a pet-safe toothbrush and veterinary-approved toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to. A dog toothbrush and toothpaste can support a home routine, but does not replace veterinary examinations and treatment.
Dental chews or water additives may be useful additions when appropriate, but are not equivalent to brushing. Ask your veterinarian how often your dog needs an oral examination and professional dental care.

- Persistent bad breath
- Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
- Difficulty chewing or dropping food
- Loose or missing teeth
- Facial swelling
- Reluctance to eat or obvious mouth pain
An awake cosmetic scraping does not adequately diagnose or treat disease beneath the gumline. Veterinary dental treatment may require examination and cleaning under anesthesia.
Food, weight, and everyday nutrition
Feed a complete and balanced diet appropriate for life stage, size, activity, and medical needs. Measure meals, provide fresh water, and count treats as part of daily intake. A veterinarian can help choose food and portions, particularly for puppies, seniors, dogs with disease, or dogs gaining weight.
Chewy notes that puppies younger than 16 weeks may be prone to low blood sugar and may need three or four small meals daily; confirm feeding frequency with a veterinarian, especially for a very small puppy. Adult dogs may do well with two meals, depending on their needs.

Even modest excess weight can affect mobility. Monitor body condition, waist shape, and rib coverage rather than relying only on a scale. Do not make a therapeutic diet change without veterinary advice.
Health concerns to discuss with a veterinarian
A cross can inherit health risks associated with either parent; a list of possible conditions is not a diagnosis or prediction for every dog. Sources flag periodontal disease, luxating patella, tracheal collapse, allergies, eye conditions, and endocrine disease as concerns to discuss with a veterinarian.
Ask about symptoms or testing relevant to the individual dog and its parentage. Maintain a healthy weight and arrange preventive veterinary care. If a dog has tracheal concerns, PetMD recommends using a harness rather than putting pressure on the neck.
When to call the veterinarian
Seek veterinary advice for recurring cough or breathing difficulty, fainting, seizures, sudden vision changes, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, abnormal thirst or urination, unexplained weight change, severe dental pain, persistent lameness, or sudden reluctance to move. Routine care should include an examination soon after adoption or purchase, vaccination planning, parasite prevention, microchip verification, nutrition advice, and regular preventive examinations.

If considering a puppy, ask to:
- See veterinary and health-testing records for both parents.
- Confirm whether the Poodle parent is Toy or Miniature.
- Review the parents’ registered names and search public records where available.
- Learn what socialization, handling, and veterinary care puppies receive.
- Meet the mother and observe her health and behavior when possible.
- Ask how the source handles genetic concerns, returns, and buyer questions.
The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals’ CHIC program consolidates breed-specific testing information. A CHIC number means required tests were performed and results released; it does not mean every result was normal or that the dog is free of inherited disease. For this cross, research Yorkshire Terrier and relevant Toy or Miniature Poodle parent-club recommendations separately.
Do not accept “designer breed,” “non-shedding,” or “allergy-proof” language as a substitute for documentation. A responsible source should welcome reasonable questions.
Adoption and rescue are also worthwhile options. Ask for the available dog’s medical, behavioral, dental, grooming, and separation history, recognizing records may be incomplete. Availability and policies vary.
First-year Yorkiepoo care checklist
- Schedule a veterinary examination soon after bringing the dog home.
- Review vaccination, deworming, parasite-prevention, and microchip records.
- Establish measured meals, fresh water, and body-condition monitoring.
- Start gradual toothbrushing.
- Practice gentle handling of the mouth, ears, paws, coat, and nails.
- Brush the coat frequently and plan grooming approximately every four to six weeks as needed.
- Begin reward-based household training, leash work, and calm-alone practice.
- Provide daily activity and short mental-enrichment sessions, adjusted to the dog.
- Ask for health-test documentation for both parents and verify records when possible.
- Budget for veterinary visits, dental care, grooming, food, parasite prevention, and unexpected care.
What does owning a Yorkiepoo really require?
A Yorkiepoo may suit a first-time owner, senior, apartment resident, or family with respectful older children—but it is an involved companion, not a decorative lapdog. Plan for company, boundaries, daily stimulation, coat maintenance, dental care, and preventive veterinary attention.
